7 Aperitif, roses in bloom and Canal Grande Unexpected harmony of colours, scents and flowers This is indeed one of the marvels Venice still has to offer: a rose garden on the Canal Grande, a place where to enjoy aperitif in front of a unique view. If aperitif means company, rest and fun before a night out or after a long day, a moment when to taste a glass of good wine or a cocktail with exquisite appetizers, then Ca Nigra is the perfect place. The Brazilian barmaid Ana can make excellent caipiroskas and mojitos, or the famous Ca Nigra cocktail, right in the rose garden. This is the Hotel Ca Nigra s garden, very close to the train station, an exclusive setting of rare beauty which offers a welcoming bar service that, first of all because of its unique position, is an event that cannot be missed in order to fully enjoy Venice. Something to taste with curiosity, to discover that there is true art even in creating a spritz. A nice chat with Bruno Iaconis, despite the age one of the most required and well-know barmen in Venice, and wizard of essences at the Oriental Bar of the Hotel Metropole, makes us appreciate how much passion there is behind The art of aperitif. Each customer has his own identity, just as each drink has its own character: the ability lies in combining identity with character. This research for combinations, with creativity but also with an accurate knowledge of the ingredients and how to use them, is what makes the Metropole wonderful drink and spritz offer literally delicious. From 2012, Bruno presents and modernises aperitifs and unusual drinks: The base is mainly Prosecco, he reveals mixed with alcoholic bitters and natural essences that we create, with plants and fruit carefully macerated, such as ginger, passion fruit, juniper, vanilla, or with the most fragrant Oriental spices since we are at the Oriental Bar. The latest and most awarded drink is the Vivaldi Martini, in honour of the Venetian composer who became famous to the world right from the Chiesa della Pietà and its chapel, where the Hotel Metropole is now located. Commissioned in the summer of 1943 by Peggy Guggenheim for her New York townhouse, Mural established a new sense of scale and audacity for the Abstract Expressionist movement, anticipating the classic poured abstractions that Pollock would begin four years later. Setting Mural into context, the selection includes Pollock s newly-restored Alchemy, as well as works by the artist s wife Lee Krasner, David Smith and Robert Motherwell. Crucially, it also sheds new light on Pollock s relationship to such photographers of action and energy as Herbert Matter, Barbara Morgan, Aaron Siskind and Gjon Mili. The exhibition travels to the Deutsche Bank Kunsthalle, Berlin and then to the Museo Picasso, Málaga. Jackson Pollock s Mural : Energy Made Visible is organized by The University of Iowa Museum of Art. Together with this remarkable exhibition, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection presents Charles Pollock: A Retrospective, the first exhibition in Italy and the first full retrospective of the painting of Charles Pollock, oldest brother of Jackson Pollock. The majority of the more than 120 paintings, sketches, drawings, photographs, and documents, some never before exhibited, are loaned by the Charles Pollock Archives, Paris, thanks to the artist s widow and daughter, Sylvia Winter Pollock and Francesca Pollock. A small number of works by Jackson Pollock, Thomas Hart Benton and a unique painting by Sanford Pollock complement Charles s early years in New York and Washington, shedding light on what amounted to a family enterprise studying to be artists of the Pollock family before World War II. Additional loans come from other members of the Pollock family, from the Archives of American Art/Smithsonian Institution, the Addison Gallery of American Art, Phillips Academy, Andover, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, the O Brien American Art Collection, Sewickley, the American Contemporary Art Gallery, Munich and several private collections. 13 13 Spring at the Doge s Palace The Doge s Palace, the splendid residence at the heart of St. Mark s Square, has always been considered a symbol of Venice. Its interiors, superbly decorated by artists such as Titian, Veronese, Tiepolo and Tintoretto, allow a variety of fascinating tours: from the enormous halls, the centre of the Serenissima s political life to the Doge s private rooms, and from the famous prisons to the light-filled loggias overlooking the Square and the lagoon. And now there are the Secret Itineraries (http://palazzoducale. visitmuve.it), offering access to some of the most evocative rooms for the history of the Palace, including the Torture Chamber and the Piombi (dungeons), offering an interesting insight into the civil and political life of the city, its organisation, and system of justice. In the spring, a new and fascinating tour will be inaugurated, The Doge s hidden treasures, enabling visitors to explore areas currently not included in the usual visit: a new and appealing art-historical route through the rooms reserved for the Doge in the wing of the Palace next to the Basilica. Doge s Chiesetta: a facinating trove Doge s Palace, from April 1st Guided tour, booking compulsory, at least 2 persons up to 10, Morning visits: italian language 11:00 english language 11:45 french language 12:30 It takes around 75 minutes Please be infomed that environmental structure is hardly suitable for disadvantage people. Kids under 6 y.o. are not allowed. For further information: The fulcrum of the new tour will be the Chiesetta and the Antichiesetta del Doge (the Doge s chapel and antechamber) which have been carefully restored in recent years to bring the original decorative splendour back to life. They are extraordinary sites and of notable value both for the quality of their art and architecture and for the historical interest associated with aspects of the Doge s worship and privacy. The Doge s Palace also offers itself as a centre for exploring and considering more recent art. One example is the current exhibition, Henri Rousseau. Archaic candour (http://www. mostrarousseau.it/), dedicated to one of the central exponents of figurative art between the late 19th century and the revolutionary period of the avant-garde movements, famous for the dreamlike moods, forests and enchanting landscapes of his paintings. The exhibition marks a first for Italy, and through a lively sequence of thematic sections makes it possible not only to admire some of his most famous masterpieces, but also to reconsider his importance in the light of works painted by later artists. The Chiesetta del Doge will be hosting, on May 20th the third conferences to explore the work of Douanier Rousseau, in which scholars Valerio Terraroli, Laurence Des and Flavio Fergonzi will be speaking about this completely new and original artist. 14 14 VENICE Venice Garden ORIAGO In the 16th and 17th centuries the Venetian aristocracy built aorun 60 splendid country houses here, like the Palladian Villa Malcontenta and the Villa Pisani, Villa Venier and the spectacular residences around the river that connect Padua and Venice Villa Franceschi, a true jewel. the 16th century home of a family of jewellers now stands, wonderfully restored and reborn, hosts charming suites boasting artisanal silk fabrics, splendid Rezzonico Murano glass chandeliers, stone fireplaces and original Venetian marble grit floors. It s an aristocratic setting infused with the familiarity Villa Widmann MIRA Villa Franceschi Villa Gradenigo Villa Foscari - Malcontenta Villa Foscarini Rossi is one of the many jewels to visit along the Riviera del Brenta. Very close to Stra city centre, it is a XVII century architectural complex formed by two buildings: the Foresteria (guesthouse) which, after an accurate restoration, hosts various events, and the Villa Padronale, where the Museo Rossimoda della Calzatura (Rossimoda Museum of the Shoe) is located. In the Foresteria, the Salone degli Affreschi (frescoes hall) decorated by De Bruni in 1652 stands out and it is here that cocktails, dinners, and meetings are hosted, extending up to the front park and especially to the wide portico. The Museum represents the cultural history of the shoe industry tradition of the Riviera del Brenta: 1700 million of women s shoes are here exhibited, created since 1947 for the most prestigious international fashion designers (Céline, Dior, DOLO Villa Pisani VENICE LAGOON Barchessa Valmarana STRA NOVENTA PADOVANA Villa Giovanelli N A V I G L I O B R E N T A PADOVA Fendi, Givenchy, Porsche, Ungaro, YSL etc.). The small but precious collection of Venetian shoes from 1700 is very interesting too. of a countryside home. The other part of the hotel occupies the old colonnades where coaches and carts were kept. The restaurant is also here. Inspired by Remigio Dal Corso, the host and a great food lover, chefs Gianluca Vulcano and Umberto Giraldo use the finest products from the countryside and lagoon. The vegetables are from the villa s organic garden or the sandy, briny soil of the Island of Sant Erasmo. The seafood, always fresh, is caught in the lagoon, and is always prepared with great respect for its natural taste and appeal. Just try the spider crab to see how true this is, or the local moeche crabs, caught after shedding their shell, and fried. And the schie, small shrimp from the lagoon, enjoyed round here with the local slow-cooked white polenta. The best way to experience Villa Franceschi s discreet luxury is to stroll in the shade of the ancient trees in the historic garden and let yourself be pampered by the infinite care of the Dal Corso family. 17 17 Festa della Sensa, May 17th 2015 One of the most prominent event in Venice is the Festa della Sensa (Feast of the Ascension). Tourists relive the age-old history of the Serenissima Republic and its intimate relationship with the Sea, and the customs and traditions of Venetian Rowing. Venice celebrates the event with a water parade of traditional rowing boats. At the head of the parade is the Serenissima, a boat carrying the City dignitaries. Still today, on board this boat, the marriage rites with the sea are celebrated through an evocative ceremony, of a ring being launched into the water, and the religious ceremony afterwards, at the church of San Nicolò on the Lido.
