2 WHAT IS A PA? A licensed health care professional qualified by academic and clinical education, certified to practice medicine with the supervision of a MD or DO Roles PAs perform: Diagnostic Therapeutic Preventive Health maintenance

3 STATISTICS OF THE PROFESSION In 2010, CNN Money ranked the PA profession #5 Best Job in America PAs were #1 in the fast growing fields with estimated growth of 46.65% in the next 10 years In 2011, US News and World Report ranked the PA profession as one of the 50 Best Careers of 2011 In 2012, Forbes ranked the PA profession as #1 for jobs Best masters degree 3 years in a row Median pay: $97,000/year US Department of Health and Human Services: It found that the current number of PAs (72,000) will grow by almost 72 percent by However, this growth rate will likely only provide 16 percent of the providers needed to address the projected primar y care physician shor tage.

14 CASPA Central Application Services for PA Opens from April until March of the following year First time application will take exactly 4 weeks to process Not all schools have the same deadlines. 41/154 schools are not part of CASPA Takes forever to finish! START EARLY

15 CAPA CAPA California Academy of PA enhance, educate and empower PAs for the ultimate benefit of their patients CAPA Legislative Milestone: 1982: CAPA makes a first formal introduction to all CA legislators by mailing out an information packet to each 1993: CAPA finishes final preparation to introduce SB 1642 the PA Prescriptive Bill 1994: SB 1642 is signed into law. PAs can issue written prescription drug orders 2002: Labor Code revised to clarify that PAs may treat Workers Comp patients 2004: PAs can supervise MAs in community and free clinics 2011: CAPA sponsored SB 233, clarifying that California PAs can provide evaluation, treatment and specialty consultation in the Emergency Department setting.
