5 The rise of the smart device and smart appliances Appliances Are generally dedicated to performing a specific range of functions or tasks. Can be in a commercial, industrial or domestic environment. This typically includes the ability to transmit information on status, and to diagnose particular problems. As of January 2014, the general consensus is that the market for domestic smart appliances is still very much in its early stages. The global market for domestic appliances was seriously affected by the financial recession, and is only just recovering: Examples include: domestic white goods lifts / elevators manufacturing equipment Suppliers who are active in this domain include: Siemens Bosch LG General Electric Samsung A Siemens Fridge. In 2012 it was worth c. $100 billion annually globally. With CAGR of c. 5% this would reach $150 billion by If smart appliances achieve a 10% share of this market, this would equate to $15 billion per annum. 6 Buildings Key Developments As elsewhere in the world of smart technology, technological advances at both the lower and upper end are having an impact. Development / Trend HVAC systems are becoming more intelligent. Many systems now have their own intelligent controllers. Intermediate level controls are developing, such as communicating room controllers. Big data and advanced analytics are becoming a much more pervasive part of smart buildings. The emphasis on energy and connectivity is creating increasing opportunities for utilities and communications companies. Users expect easy but secure access to building systems anywhere, any time. Increased interest in solutions which incorporate a managed service, as well as building controls. Key Players Hitachi, LG, Mitsubishi, Samsung, Daikin, Panasonic, Fujitsu Honeywell, Johnson Controls, Schneider Electric, Siemens. Busch/Jaeger, Founten IBM, Microsoft, BuildingIQ ADT, Verizon, E.ON Most major suppliers of smart building solutions now offer a cloud- based capability. Jones Lang LaSalle, Johnson Controls and Dalkia all offer facilities management. A truly smart building needs to be able to interact with smart devices or systems both internal and external to it. 7 Updated Building Energy Management Systems - BEMS Energy is becoming an increasingly live issue in the management of buildings, owing to: Rising energy prices Increasing concerns about security and reliability of energy supplies Regulatory pressures Brand equity issues Building Energy Management Systems are a response to this. BSRIA defines BEMS as: A computer software-based system that helps to manage, control and monitor building technical services (HVAC, lighting etc.) and the energy consumption of devices related to the building use (business machines such as computers, printers and photocopiers etc.) within a single building or group of buildings so that energy use balances the way in which the building is used. Suppliers of BEMS solutions include: Leading suppliers of BACS solutions, such as Honeywell, Johnson Controls, Siemens and Schneider Electric. 8 Updated Grids in Europe Source: ESMIG June 2014 EU member states vary greatly in their readiness and willingness to roll out smart meters. Evolution Towards the Internet of Everything BSRIA Page 8 The European Commission has forecast that 400 billion needs to be invested in European smart grids by Equivalent to 800 for each inhabitant of the EU. At the same time, the Commission has been leading moves to introduce common standards for smart grids. A single European market for goods, services and people across the EU also implies a single market for energy, including electricity and gas. In Europe the structure of the grids, the energy sources and the challenges faced vary significantly between countries. Ownership models also vary significantly in terms of public/private ownership, and the level and effectiveness of competition and regulation. The Energy Demand Coalition (SEDC) a membership group of major European companies involved in Demand Response, has estimated that a rough estimate of current peak clipping capabilities through Demand Response in Europe ranges between 6% and 11% depending on the profile of commercial/ industrial and residential resources available in each market. As of 2011 they found this was not yet happening in most member states, owing mainly to the regulatory environment in those countries. 8

9 New Advances in Battery Storage Battery storage has been seen as prohibitively expensive, apart from cover over short periods. Lead and lithium batteries are now commercially available in Europe for c. 1,000 (or $1,200) per KwH. In a country with high consumer electricity prices - (such as Germany) PV with battery storage can have a lower unit price than mains electricity. o A large number of manufacturers from Germany and neighbouring countries are now offering solutions. In April 2015 US electric car manufacturer Tesla launched Powerwall, - battery storage aimed at the residential market. o a7kwh unit for $3,000 o a10kwh unit will retail for $3,500 o Further costs will be incurred for the battery management system, and the installation itself In June 2015, Mercedes launched a 2.5KwH home battery. o Up to 8 can be used in combination, providing 20KwH Batteries from both Tesla and Mercedes targeted at the residential market provide further evidence of technology moving into the built environment from elsewhere. Nonetheless, the tipping point has yet to be reached. In July 2015 the results of a pilot smart grid project Nice, France showed that while large scale battery storage was technically feasible, it was not yet costeffective. One factor is that French domestic electricity prices are significantly lower than in, say, Germany. Evolution Towards the Internet of Everything BSRIA Page 9 9

10 Updated Electric Vehicles Electrically powered vehicles have been growing, from a very low base In 2014, only 6 countries recorded more than 1% of all new cars registered as electric. 8 of the top 10 countries were in Europe The others being the US and Japan Norway shows the difference that strong incentives can make, even in a sparsely populated country. Almost 14% of new cars registered are electric. About half of the top 10 countries had abundant cheap electricity either through hydro or through nuclear power The average growth rate between 2013 and 2014 was 80% This conceals wide variations in the growth between individual countries. Surveys from countries like the UK suggest that electric cars are likely to remain a small minority for some time to come. 12 Barriers and Concerns with Integration Complexity As devices, buildings, cities and national systems become increasingly interconnected and interactive, the overall complexity of the relationships increases exponentially, posing management challenges. Complex new interactive systems can also have unexpected consequences. Security The very need for openness and accessibility can make smart systems open to attack, e.g. hacking, cyberterrorism Privacy Concerns over privacy and data protection can militate against the collection and retention of data, even where the personal link is slight. Equality / Social Exclusion Rollout of smart technology is uneven, and often tends to reach poorer and older groups last, potentially exacerbating inequalities. Standards Multiple, interlinked smart systems require common standards. There is often a trade-off between common standards and innovation. Organisation Organisations, governments etc. need to adapt to manage technology. Commercial Dominance An enterprise which becomes dominant in interlinked areas of smart technology could wield an unfair advantage, and attract opposition. The Legacy World In regions dominated by older buildings and cities the challenges of integrating in a smart way, and the associated costs, may be higher. While it may be practicable to meet the needs for simplicity, security, privacy and commercial equity in isolation, it is going to be much harder to achieve these in combination. There is likely to be a need for some difficult trade-offs. The sheer potential complexity of smart systems, especially when interlinked, may pose their own limitations.
