5 STUDY AT UKZN A CHOICE OF FIVE CAMPUSES Edgewood, in Pinetown, is the University s primary site for teacher education. It is close to all major amenities. Howard College is situated in the vibrant cosmopolitan coastal city of Durban, renowned for its beaches and the Moses Mabhida Stadium. Howard College is close to a number of shopping centres and entertainment spots, as well as being about 10 minutes from the beach. The Medical campus offers hands-on, problem-based, practical and relevant training to those interested in pursuing the MBChB programme. The campus is only ten minutes from Durban s city centre. This campus is home to world-class infrastructure and laboratories. Pietermaritzburg campus has a relaxed atmosphere with a communal vibe. This city is home to some incredible architectural and historical wonders which are sure to appeal to those interested in cultural activities. Pietermaritzburg is only a one-hour drive from Durban and two hours drive from the Drakensberg. Westville campus is located within an environmental conservancy about eight kilometres from the CBD of Durban and Pinetown. The Westville campus has both state-of-the-art infrastructure and beautiful natural surroundings. 3

6 UKZN INSPIRING GREATNESS HOW TO APPLY TO UKZN Applications to UKZN must be made via the Central Applications Office (CAO). The CAO is a central office that handles applications to most universities in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. The CAO is for first-time South African applicants applying for undergraduate programmes at UKZN. This includes transfers from other universities at an undergraduate level. How Does it Work? The CAO application form allows an applicant to apply to more than one institution and allows up to six choices on the same application form. 1 STEP 2 3 STEP STEP 4 STEP 5 STEP Consult the CAO handbook which provides listings of qualifications available at the different institutions. Have a look through the various courses offered and choose a programme that interests you. Find the CAO code which is linked to the qualification that you have chosen. This code needs to be entered on the application form. Use this CAO code to complete a CAO form which is available from the CAO, the CAO website or the University s Application and Information Office. Follow the directions on the CAO form to submit your application. CAO offers an on-line application facility. Go to their website: Click on the tab Apply. After this, click on the left handtab Apply now. Follow the prompts and enter all the necessary information. You can obtain an electronic copy of the CAO handbook by going to and clicking on the right hand side page on the tab entitled For a copy of the CAO handbook entry for 2013, please click here. In addition, application forms can be downloaded from the CAO s website. Click Apply, then click on the tab continue with your application. You will then have to insert your ID number/ passport number, then click on continue with your application. Follow the prompts and enter all the required information. You will then be taken to a page which will give you the option to download the application forms or apply online. CAO forms and handbooks are available both from the CAO and the University s Applications and Information Office. Handbooks are also available from the CAO office; please call

7 STUDY AT UKZN Application Fee An application fee of R 175 must be paid to the CAO: either by cheque or postal order direct to the CAO on submission of the completed application form. The cheque or postal order must be made out to the Central Applications Office and the cheque must be crossed. No cash payments are accepted. by direct deposit at any branch of Absa Bank or via the Internet. Applicants must use the deposit slip or banking details provided on page 4 of the CAO application form. After 1 November, a late application fee of R 300 is charged. Not all programmes at UKZN will accept late applications. 8 UKZN INSPIRING GREATNESS HOW ARE STUDENTS SELECTED? UKZN is serious about excellence. It is important to note that all degrees have a limited number of spaces available. The best qualified applicants are chosen first and selection continues until all places have been filled. It is unlikely that applicants below the cut-off points will be selected. Demand exceeds places available, and not all applicants meeting minimum requirements will be offered places. Entrance Requirements A National Senior Certificate for degree studies (NSC-DEG) (a Matric Bachelor s pass). A minimum of seven subjects with at least four subjects (passed at level 4) from the designated list (right). English Home Language/First Additional Language (passed at Level 4 minimum). The medium of tuition at UKZN is English. Life Orientation (passed at Level 4 minimum). Life Orientation marks are not considered when calculating your Admission Point Score (APS). Degree-specific subjects and Academic Performance Score (APS) (see how points are calculated on the next page). Note that all designated subjects as well as other approved NSC subjects count towards the accumulative Academic Performance Score (APS). Life Orientation (LO) and Maths 3 are the only subjects not scored. Extra subjects are also not scored. 10 UKZN INSPIRING GREATNESS INTERNATIONAL APPLICATION PROCEDURES Undergraduate Full-time Studies If you would like to apply for admission to a full-time undergraduate programme, you must apply on the UKZN Undergraduate Application Form. Refugee applicants must be in possession of a valid Section 41 permit/refugee identity document, which grants you permission to study. Application procedures and application fees as for local students are applicable. Apply via CAO. See Central Applications Office. Contact numbers +27 (0) International applicants are subject to a selection procedure based on academic merit and the number of spaces available. Applicants with non-south African school leaving certificates must contact the South African Matriculation Board directly to determine if they qualify for admission to degree studies in South Africa. Please contact +27 (0) / or consult or write to International applicants may qualify for exemption through AEB or Cambridge examinations if they have two A-levels ( A E ) and three O-level passes ( A, B or C ) or equivalent. However, certain subject groupings are also required. It is not sufficient to pass in O-levels only. Please note that programmes may have subject, level and minimum performance (in O and A levels) requirements for admission to their programmes. Consult the entrance requirement tabulations information on subject requirements. Please ensure that you have your original documents available at registration and arrange for official translations where applicable. 12 UKZN INSPIRING GREATNESS REWARDING EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIPS & MERIT AWARDS Merit Awards are offered to the top Grade 12s intending to study at UKZN. The Grade 12 Merit Awards are awarded on receipt of the Senior Certificate symbols from the Education Department and no application is necessary. This does not apply to any individual who has studied beyond Grade 12 before coming to UKZN and/or is not within two years of the applicant s Senior Certificate date. (Subject to annual review) Prestige Entrant Scholarships Pius Langa Scholarship (Prestige Entrant Scholarship) R to matriculants from schools writing the NSC examinations and ranked in the top ten in each of the nine provinces, and to learners from IEB schools in KwaZulu-Natal who are ranked in the top 50 nationally in the IEB final matriculation examinations. Renewal/Retention of Prestige Entrant Scholarships Entrant prestige awards of R may be retained into the next year of undergraduate study if the recipient scores at least 80% on a weighted average basis on a normal fullyear subject load. Frene Ginwala Scholarship (Prestige Entrant Equity Scholarships) The top 10 African female entrants who register at UKZN are awarded R Renewal/retention of Prestige Entrant Equity Scholarships Entrant prestige equity awards of R may be retained into the next year of under- graduate study if the recipient scores at least 75% on a weighted average basis on a normal full-year subject load. Recipients of prestige equity awards who score between 70% and 74% on the same basis may retain an award of R Entrant Merit Scholarships for Exceptional Achievement Merit Scholarships of R are available to top achievers with Level 7 or greater NSC results in at least six academic subjects excluding Life Orientation, Mathematics Literacy and Ad Maths. Entrant awards are not available to students who join UKZN from other universities. Renewal/retention of entrant awards Entrant merit awards may be retained into the next year of undergraduate study at R if the recipient scores at least 80% on a weighted average basis on a normal full-year subject load. NB: Entrant awards may not be carried forward into postgraduate study. 10

13 STUDY AT UKZN GRADE 12 Top Performance Students Entrant Merit Awards of R to those matriculants ranked within the top 10% of Entrants from each of the largest 100 feeder schools serving UKZN, who are not included in category 2 above. Renewal/retention of entrant awards These entrant merit awards may be retained into the next year of undergraduate study at a higher value of R if the recipient scores at least 80% on a weighted average basis on a normal full-year subject load. Prestige Sports Scholarships Students must have played sport at national level in the year immediately before registration with the institution; the scholarship is intended to cover tuition costs. A maximum of 12 scholarships are awarded; renewals are based on satisfactory academic performance. Closing date for the sports applications is 31 October. 14 UKZN INSPIRING GREATNESS FINANCING YOUR STUDIES Loans and Financial Aid UKZN offers very limited financial assistance to students whose combined family income is less than R a year. It is generally offered in the form of a loan which must be paid back, with interest, after leaving the University. A portion of the loan may be converted to a bursary if the student passes all modules in a degree. After the first year examinations, bursaries may be offered to academically deserving students who have passed 100% of their registered courses with a 65% or greater degree average and whose family gross income is less than R per annum. If you require financial assistance, make sure you indicate this on the CAO Application Form. Your application will be considered and financial aid application forms will be mailed to you if you are provisionally awarded financial aid. The information provided in these forms will be verified and the final award of financial assistance will be confirmed by the College Admissions office. Please also consult the sponsor database available at You will also need to budget for accommodation, books, stationery and equipment, transport, sports subscriptions and personal expenses. There are various payment options. Academic fees On the following page, please find a guide to fees for Fees for 2013 will be set in the second semester of Please allow for a possible change in fees for Please consider that these are only the study fees and do not include accommodation/ books. A text book can range between R 200 and R 600 and most courses require text books. Text books could cost as much as R R per year. These extra costs need to be considered when looking at the University costs. The fees listed on the next page are for guideline purposes only. They indicate the approximate amounts payable by students who are registered for the normal academic load for a full year on a full-time basis. The actual fees payable will depend on the specific modules for which the student has registered during the year. Although the information regarding student fees has been compiled as carefully as possible, the University accepts no responsibility for any errors or omissions. Acceptance deposit A non-refundable deposit of R 500 is required from first-time candidates at this university to secure a place offered for the 12

16 UKZN INSPIRING GREATNESS ACCOMMODATION There are on-campus and off-campus residences, but accommodation is limited. Allocation of rooms is based on need, academic potential, ability to pay and distance from home. Unfortunately, it is not possible to allocate rooms to all applicants and you may therefore have to find yourself accommodation off-campus. Edgewood Residence accommodation is available on Edgewood campus. Both catering and selfcatering options are available. A total of 631 students are housed in 11 residences on campus. An additional five flats housing five students each are available for postgraduate students. Howard College & Medical campus On-campus residences The University residences for Howard College and Medical campus in Durban accommodate approximately students. Competition for places is keen and it is not possible to accept all applicants. Residences are grouped into two halls, namely Charles Smith Hall and Albert Luthuli Hall. Charles Smith Hall comprises 12 individual residences close to the main academic buildings, banks, shops and Medical campus. All residences have access control, lounges and television rooms, intercom systems, call boxes and parking spaces. All residences are self-catering, while a cafeteria facility is available for students. Limited accommodation for postgraduate students is offered at Scully House and Postgraduate House. Off-campus residences St Hillier is a mixed-gender residence which is comprised of fully furnished two/ three bedroom flats. Each student has a single bedroom. Occupants share a lounge, kitchen and bathroom. A laundry facility and parking are available. St Hillier is situated opposite Queensmead Shopping Mall in Umbilo and is a few minutes walk from the Medical campus. It is on a bus route to Howard College campus. The JV Smit Residence has 90 large single rooms with entertainment and study rooms as well as tennis courts. Catering, laundry and parking facilities are available. It is close to the Medical campus and is on a bus route to Howard College and the city. Pietermaritzburg Approximately students are accommodated in residences. About a third of the students registered stay in one of the four halls of residence. The Student Housing helpdesk can be contacted for assistance with off-campus accommodation. 14

17 STUDY AT UKZN Petrie Hall It is a cluster of residences for mainly first and second-year female students. The three large residences are Eleanor Russell Hall, University Hall and Lodge, and are situated close to the Science Block, Administration, Student Services, the library and tennis courts, shops, post office and banks. A student committee ensures the smooth running of student life in all residences. William O Brien Hall Residence This is a male residence which is situated on the main campus. It consists of single rooms distributed over six blocks, with communal kitchens. Extra-mural activities are well catered for via the residence sports programme, senior and junior lounges, a large communal games room, and a visitors reception lounge. Additional facilities include a braai area, car repair and wash bays, and secure parking for all residents cars. Malherbe Residence Malherbe (men and women) is situated on Durban Road opposite the University gate. Male and female accommodation is separate and the common rooms and TV lounge are shared. The residence possesses a quadrangle planted with trees, shrubs and lawn where students play ball games or relax. There is also a braai area. It is within walking distance of the Students Union, the Science Block, the Old Arts Block, shops, banks and the post office. It is, however, a 10-minute walk from the New Arts Block, Commerce, Law, Agriculture or Life Sciences Blocks. The Malherbe Flats (postgraduate students) are called Brucian House, and Robleigh House. Consisting of three, four and fivebedroomed flats, they are suited to small groups of students wishing to share accommodation. No sharing of individual rooms is permitted. Rooms are basically furnished and self-catering. A number of lock-up garages are available to rent. 15

18 UKZN INSPIRING GREATNESS Denison Hall of Residence Denison (men and women) is situated in quiet park-like surroundings on the old golf course portion of the campus. Denison has its own kitchen complex and a clubhouse, consisting of a large communal lounge and the Denison Pub. The residence has gym, TV, snooker and table tennis facilities. Westville Westville campus offers a range of accommodation, including off-campus and selfcatering flats and on-campus residences where meals are provided on request. On-campus residences The on-campus residences accommodate students. Competition for places is keen and it is not possible to accept all applicants. There are four blocks of residences, namely S-Block, R-Block, P-Block and O-Block. O-Block only accommodates females, while all others are mixed. All residences have access control, television rooms and parking spaces. All residences are self-catering while a dining facility is still available at O-Block. Off-campus residences The off-campus residences accommodate 713 students. Competition is also keen and it is not possible to accept all applications. 16

19 STUDY AT UKZN These residences are fully furnished. All students share in double rooms while postgraduate students can be accommodated in a single room if available. Occupants share a kitchen and a bathroom. The residences of Bedford Hall and San Sabil are situated in Hospital Road in town. Dunstaple Heights is in Varsity Drive, while Santa Cruz, for postgraduate students only, is in Reservoir Hills. Applications for residences Local first-year applicants must apply for admission to University residence on the application form supplied by the Central Applications Office (CAO). No separate application is required. It is not always possible to accommodate a student in the residence of first choice. International students must apply for accommodation on the UKZN application form. Students are not able to choose where to be placed and are placed where spaces are available. Residence accommodation fees Annual residence fees for first-time students are set at approximately R per year for a standard room and R for a large room. These disciplines touch every aspect of human life and drive the modern world. The country is facing a severe shortage of qualified engineers and scientists. Studies reveal that this skills shortage is a major constraint to economic growth. From the classroom and laboratory to the field, UKZN provides one of the finest study and research environments on the African continent. We offer a wide array of interesting and innovative degree programmes which open doors to various careers in agriculture, engineering and science. The College of Agriculture, Engineering and Science offers programmes at the Durban and Pietermaritzburg centres. Science and Agriculture is based on the Pietermaritzburg and Westville campuses. In particular, Agriculture is offered only on the Pietermaritzburg campus and Geology is only on the Westville campus. Engineering students have the option of completing their first year of study on either the Pietermaritzburg or Howard College campus (other than Chemical Engineering which is offered at Howard College only). All other years of study are undertaken at Howard College, except for the third and final year in Agricultural Engineering, which is offered only in Pietermaritzburg. Engineering Engineering at UKZN offers fully accredited professional degrees in the fields of Engineering and Land Surveying. These are structured degree programmes in the applied sciences, which stretch over four years of full-time study. The College offers degree programmes which are relevant to industry, and are internationally recognised and accredited by the Engineering Council of South Africa. Qualified and skilled engineers are in high demand and our graduates readily advance into top positions with prominent companies world-wide. Emphasis is placed on training in the fundamental principles which equip engineers, construction managers, land surveyors and quantity surveyors with the necessary skills to deal competently with the manifold problems they will meet in their professions. 22 UKZN INSPIRING GREATNESS Science and Agriculture Science and Agriculture at UKZN is recognised nationally and internationally for its excellence in education and research. It produces sought-after graduates who are equipped with the skills and training to meet the challenges of the 21st century. A diverse range of specialisations are offered, enabling students to shape their degrees according to their interests and career aspirations. For example, UKZN s School of Agricultural, Earth and Environmental Sciences recognises that agriculture is far more than farming. It encompasses conservation and environmental planning, engineering, economics, water research, microbiology, plant and animal breeding, human and animal nutrition, community resources development, horticulture, crop production and wildlife management, to name just a few. Programmes in Science and Agriculture include general and flexible degrees as well as more specialised options with structured modules and focused vocational outcomes.
