3 The System Rules Below is a quick rundown of the Proven Plodder system rules. In the following sections, you ll see example races and how to identify potential qualifiers for the system. Rule 1 UK Flat Racing Only This includes both turf and all weather racing, and runs all year round, but is confined only to flat racing (i.e. no jump races qualify). Rule 2 Class 5, 6 or 7 Claimers and Selling Races Only We are looking at low grade races here, where the market tends to under-estimate the reliability of the market leaders. So race class must be 5, 6, or 7; and the race must be a claiming or selling race. But we are not interested in claiming handicaps or selling handicaps (i.e. only consider nonhandicap races) Rule 3 Favourites Only We are only interested in the favourites, including joint- or co-favourites. As I said, the horses at the top of the market win more often than the betting public believes, and provide profit opportunities when they re proven plodders. Rule 4 Males only Only bet the horse if he is a colt, horse or gelding. In most cases, he will be a gelding as he will have already proven himself to be of insufficient class to have a stallion career. Therefore, it is likely he has been de-coupled already. Rule 5 Must have been in the first five last time out We are only interested in horses that are in form right now, and one of the two ways of defining that is to see a top five placing on the horse s most recent start. Rule 6 Last ran 25 days ago or less Again, a recent run indicates race fitness, and we re looking for horses to have run within the last three to four weeks. 25 days or less is a good indicator of current fitness. Rule 7 Last winning race was in a claimer or seller We are specifically interested in horses who have demonstrated that they are capable of winning a race of this nature. So we focus on those whose last win was in either a claiming race or a selling race. And that s it. Seven rules to profit from proven plodders. Now let s have a look at an example of how to identify such a horse.

4 Finding Possible Selections First, point your browser at You will see a page like this. In this example, there are four race meetings, but only one possible race (indicated by the green circle). There are no claiming or selling races at Salisbury or Redcar, nor at Newton Abbot, which is a jumping track in any case). So let s click the 17:40 Kempton Park race link, and look at the rest of the rules.

5 Here is the race detail: We can see that Greatest Dancer is both the forecast and current market favourite. We can also see from the number 14 to the right of its name that he ran within the 25 days parameter. But Greatest Dancer was not in the first five last time, finishing ninth (the number closest to the left of the horse s name). Further, clicking the horse s name reveals that Greatest Dancer is in fact a filly, a female. And clicking on the date of her winning run reveals that she actually won a maiden fillies race, rather than a seller or claimer. Thus, Greatest Dancer fails rules #4, 5 and 7, and is not a qualifier. (See next page for an illustration of this).

6 We can see from the image above that Greatest Dancer is a filly. We are only interested in colts, geldings or horses. We see in the above that Greatest Dancer s last winning race was a maiden fillies event, and not a claiming or selling race. Greatest Dancer is not of interest to us today.

7 Here s another example, this time from Leicester. The 14:30 race at Leicester is a Class 6 Selling race, over seven furlongs (and nine yards). This is a flat turf race, so is of interest to us. Next we ll look at the runners to see who is favourite, and whether that horse ticks the rest of our boxes. We can see the forecast favourite here is a horse called Latte (see 1 below), and that Latte finished 1 st (2) last time. That last run was 14 days ago (3).

8 Finally we need to check that Latte is a male horse, and that the last winning race was a seller or claimer, which we do by first clicking on the horse s name, and then on the date of that most recent winning run. Latte is a gelding, which is a male horse which has had his crown jewels removed. Or, as racing people say, has been gelded. So that s a tick against rule #4. Finally, we click the date of the last winning race, in this case 23 Aug 11, to see if it was a seller or claimer. Sure enough, we see that it was indeed a seller, which Latte won by six lengths.

9 So Latte is a qualifier for our Proven Plodders system. Let s take a look and see how he got on Unfortunately, Latte could only finish fourth here, having held every chance. Here s another example, again from Leicester, this time on the 19 th September. It s a claiming race this time, and the runners are as follows: We can see that rules 1 and 2 are satisfied (Class 6 flat race, claiming stakes), and also that Royal Opera is the favourite (3, both the forecast and actual favourite in this case). We can also see that, as per rule 5, Royal Opera was 2 nd last time out (i.e. in the first five), and that run was just six days ago (i.e. within 25 days, as per rule 6).

10 We now just need the check rules 4 and 7, as follows. Rule 4 requires our selections to be male, so let s click the horse name of Royal Opera and see. Royal Opera is indeed male, being a gelding. Gelding is one of three descriptions of male horses, the other two being colt or horse. A female is referred to as either a filly or a mare. Finally, we can see that Royal Opera s last win was on 25 th August. If we click on the date there, we will be taken to the details of that last win, which will help us to understand whether it was in a claiming or selling race. Here goes: We can see that it was a Claiming race, and therefore our final rule, number 7, has been met. Thus, Royal Opera is a qualifier for us today, and is a bet. Here s the result:
