6 Section2 COLLEGEANDUNIVERSITYSTUDENTPERSONNEL ADMINISTRATIONPROGRAM(CUSPA) Master sineducation TheMasterofEducationinCollegeandUniversityStudentPersonnelAdministration (CUSPA)isdesignedtodevelopknowledgeableandskilledprofessionaladministratorsin suchcareerareasasstudenthousing,organizationalandleadershipdevelopment, servicesforspecialpopulations,financialaid,admissions,learningskillsdevelopment, counseling,healtheducation,recreation,andsimilarprogramsandservicesin institutionsofhighereducation. Althoughconventionalinstructionistheprovinceofthefaculty,studentpersonnel professionalsprovideinvaluableassistancetostudentsoutsidetheclassroomby fosteringpersonalgrowthandbyensuringtheavailabilityofsupportservicesthat enhancelearningandimprovethelikelihoodofasuccessfuleducationalexperience. Advising WhiletherearerequirementstocompletetheCUSPAdegree,studentscantailorthe programtostudentinterestsandneedswiththeadviceandapprovalofyourfaculty advisor.eachmaster sstudentwillbeassignedafacultyadvisorbytheprogram.the facultyadvisorgivesadviceregarding:academicwork,courses,classschedule, internshipoptions,research,aswellasothertopics.studentsarerequiredtodevelopa degreeplanandtouchbasewiththeirfacultyadvisoratleastonceasemesterpriorto registration.theadvisorwillcontactthegraduatecoordinator,whowillremovethe advisingbar. OfferedSpringSemester: HigherEducationLaw Dr.PatSomers Theobjectiveofthiscourseistoprovidestudentswithanoverviewofthesubject areasoflawmostrelevanttohighereducationandtointroducestudentsto methodsoflegalanalysisanddecision makingsothattheycananticipateand recognizelegalproblemsashighereducationadministrators. HigherEducationBusinessManagement Dr.EdwinSharpe Thiscourseisdesignedtoprovideyouandyourfellowgraduatestudentswithan understandingoftheorganizationalfunctions,structures,goals,responsibilities, andchallengesofwhataretraditionallylabeledasthe"business"or "administrative"unitsofcollegesanduniversities.thesedivisions,departments, andunitsareorganizationalsubsystemswhichundergirdandsupporttheteaching, research,serviceandstudentaffairsfunctionsofhighereducationalinstitutions. ComparativeHigherEducation Dr.PatSomers Examinationandcomparisonofthehighereducationsystemsandinstitutions ofselectedcountries. Gender&AdultDevelopment Dr.PatSomers(CrosslistedwithWGSDepartment) Thiscourseusesdevelopmentaltheorytoexploretheadultdevelopmenttheory. Weusefilm,narratives,andothertypesofdatatoexploresexualidentity, genderidentity,racial/ethnicidentity,andmoraldevelopment;plusgeneral developmentofwomenandmen. HigherEducationAssessment Dr.JuanGonzalez Thiscoursewillexamineadministrativeorganization,functions,andpractices withincollegesanduniversities.studentswillresearchrolesofthe administratorandprinciplesofeffectiveadministrativepractice. ExaminingCampusCultures Dr.SonciaReagins Lilly,Dr.DougGarrard Thisgraduatelevelseminarwillbeginbyexploringthehistoryofcultureand howitisconstructedthroughritual,language,appearance,artifacts,values,etc. Studentsinthecoursewillexaminewaysthatcultureimpactsindividualand universitylife. RaceinHigherEducation Dr.SonciaReagins Lilly Thiscoursewillincludegroupandindividualstudiesofresearchliterature aboutraceissuesinhighereducation.studentwillexecuteinvestigative projectsandreportsofresearch. LegislativeIssues Dr.VictorSaenz ThiscoursefocusesonlegislativeandpolicyissuesinTexashighereducation. Offeredconcurrentlywiththe82ndTexasLegislativeSession,thecourse coverstopicsrangingfromunderstandingthestate levelpolicymakingprocess tofinancinghighereducationtoexploringspecificpolicyissuesrelatedto collegeaccess,finance,equity,governance,anddiversity(amongothers). 8

9 Internships Theinternship(EDA397P)intheHigherEducationProgramisintendedtoaugmentand enhanceone'spreparationthroughformalstudiesandtoprovideopportunitiesto observeandexperiencefirsthandsomeofthelessonsacquiredthroughtheoretical study.dr.marilynkameensupervisesallmastersstudentinternships. Beforetheregistrationperiodforthenextsemester,studentsmustcompletecertain stepstoaddtheinternshipcourse.toenrollintheinternshipcourse,studentsmust completetheconsentofinstructorforcourseregistrationformandsubmittheform alongwithinternshipcontract(seeappendixd Forms)toDr.MarilynKameenfor approval.onceapprovalhasbeengiven,thestudentwillsubmitthepaperworktothe graduatecoordinatorforenrollmentinthecourse. Studentsmustcomplete120clockhourstoreceivecreditfortheinternship(see AppendixC Internships).Ifyouknowyouwillhavedifficultycompletingthe120 hour requirementinonesemester,youmaytakeanincompleteforthesemesterenrolled andthenfinishtheinternshipoverthenextsemester.pleasecontactyourfaculty advisoranddr.kameenifthiswillbethecase. InternshipshavebeenavailableinareasintheVice PresidentforStudentAffairsOffice, DivisionofHousingandFood,OfficeoftheDeanofStudents,DivisionofDiversityand CommunityEngagement,Parents Association,IntercollegiateAthletics,Academic Advising,Admissions,First YearInterestGroups,SummerOrientation,andtheSchoolof UndergraduateStudiesamongotherdepartmentsontheUTCampus.Studentsarealso welcometointernatareauniversitiessuchasst.edwards,hustontillotson,concordia, Southwestern,andTexasState. Inordertobroadenyourbackgroundandbetterprepareforacareerinstudentaffairs, studentsmaywanttoenrollforanadditionalinternship.ifyourfacultyadvisoranddr. Kameenapproveyourinternship,youareallowedtousethesecondinternshipasan electivecourse.studentsarenotallowedtotakemorethansixhoursofinternship credit. IndependentStudy Studentsmaybeinterestedinpursuingatopicinmoredepth,researchingasubjectof interestorcreatingandimplementingaprofessionaldevelopmentworkshop.ifso, considerenrollinginanindependentstudy(whichcountsasahighereducation elective).studentswilldevelopaproposalandretainafacultymentortosupervisethe work.themoredetailshownintheproposal,themorelikelyafacultymentorwill agreetosupervisethework.withadvisorapprovaloftheproposal,thestudentwill completetheconsentofinstructorforcourseregistrationform(appendixd)with signaturefromthefacultyadvisor.thestudentwillsubmitthecompletedformtothe 9

10 graduatecoordinatorforenrollmentinthecourse.thefacultymemberandstudentwill jointlydetermineprojectassignmentsandtimeline.theindependentstudygradesare dueattheendofthesemester;sothetimelineshouldbedesignedtoallowthe supervisorsufficienttimetogradetheproject.
