MHA Student Association continues their community volunteer efforts. Nine of the MHASA members and Dr. Burchfield volunteered at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital on February 13 th, the day before Valentine s Day, to cheer up and assist the patients and families. A few of us made coffee, tea, and "Le Bonheur Specials," while others handed out any necessary toiletries to all of the families. A small group participated in crafts with the children where we made "Love Bug" hats in celebration of the holiday. We all had a wonderful time as usual. Please enjoy the photos. 2

Program News U of M MHA Program Ranked in Top 50 in the Nation by US News & World Report Last month, the University of Memphis Master of Health Administration program placed 48th in the Healthcare Management listing for Best Graduate Programs in the United States as ranked by US News & World Report. The U of M s MHA program jumped 16 places since the last fresh rankings in 2011, the largest jump ever among Healthcare Management programs. Our MHA program at the University of Memphis has always been good. But this is great recognition of our progress and current journey of going from good to great, and a wonderful prelude to the launch of our Executive MHA track in May 2016, said Dr. Dan Gentry, professor and director of Health Systems Management and Policy in the School of Public Health, home of the MHA program. The program has been continuously accredited since its founding in 1991 by the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME), and received the maximum reaccreditation of seven years during its last visit by CAHME during the academic year. The program continues 8

to be Tennessee s only CAHME-accredited program and one of only 83 accredited healthcare management graduate programs in the country. Last spring, Modern Healthcare ranked the U of M MHA program among the Top 20 programs in the nation based on accreditation quality, value, and accessibility. Annual ACHE Congress Reception for MHA Program held March 17 in Chicago The evening of Tuesday, March 17, Drs. Gentry, Powell and Bhuyan hosted more than 30 U of M MHA alumni, students, adjunct faculty, and friends of the Program at Francesca s in the Gold Coast neighborhood of Chicago. The event included delicious northern Italian hors d oeuvres, a cash bar, U of M Tiger door prizes, brief remarks, and lots of great catching up, professional networking, and socializing. The program was honored with the presence of Drs. Margaret Schulte and Jerry Glandon, the presidents & CEOs of the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME) and the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA), respectively. In addition to the Program s alumni, students and faculty, this was the first year that the Health Systems Management and Policy (HSMP) Division has extended an invitation to the event to all ACHE/MHCE and NAHSE local chapter members in the Memphis and Mid-south region. The U of M also sponsored a booth in the exhibit hall for ACHE s Annual Congress. Thirteenth Annual Graduation Awards Banquet Held On May 1, 2015, the Thirteenth Annual Graduation Awards Banquet was held at the Fogelman Executive Center on campus with 48 students, faculty, family and alumni in attendance. The guest speaker was Gene Cashman, III (2003), CEO of Methodist Affiliated. He spoke to the 14 graduating students about lessons he has learned in his climb to the C-Suite. We so appreciate our alumni freely giving of their time to assist our current students. Thanks so much, Gene! During the evening, a number of awards were presented. Mr. Daniel Clark (2009), one of our outstanding adjunct faculty, presented Six Sigma Green Belt certificates to Andrew Tims, Tiffany Champagne, Brittany Coole, Farra Hych, Iman McGhee, Jacques de Marché and Andrea Tutor. Five students earned the Scholastic Achievement Award for having attained the highest GPA at graduation: Tiffany Champagne, Rusty Parker, Andrew Tims, Brittany Coole and Jacques de Marché. 10 Student. Tiffany Champagne was presented the MHA Program Service Award. The students selected some special recipients for their awards: Andrew Tims won the Most Likely to Procrastinate Award. Brittany Coole won the Best laugh Award. Alex South won the Most Southern Award. Jeremy Jarrett won the Most Likely to Ask Questions Award. Robert Gatewood won the Best Dressed Male Award. Iman McGhee won the Best Dressed Female Award. Rusty Parker won the Best Public Speaker Award. Simone Lampkin won the Most Fiesty Award. Jacques de Marché won the Most Likely to Succeed Award. During the evening of awards presentations, Dr. David Cox, one of the founders of our MHA Program was presented with the Joy Clay Outstanding Service Award by Dr. Paige Powell (1998). The award is presented for outstanding service to the Division of Health Systems Management and Policy. Unfortunately, Dr. Joy Clay was unable to attend the Banquet. See Dr. Cox and Dr. Powell below. Two newly created awards were also presented, and they will be discussed individually below. 10

Dr. SangNam Ahn Receives the 2015 Award for Excellence in Research Achievement: Dr. SangNam Ahn is the recipient of the 2015 Award for Excellence in Research Achievement for the Division of Health Systems Management and Policy. Dr. Ahn had been nominated by Drs. Dan Gentry, Marcia Ory, and Craig Blakely for the 2015 John D. Thompson Prize for Young Investigators, one of the three highest academic honors nationally in the field of healthcare management education and research. While not selected as the final recipient, Dr. Ahn was among the three most qualified nominees, along with faculty from other top ranked CAHME-accredited programs. In presenting the award to Dr. Ahn, Dr. Gentry said, Dr. Ahn is making us [U of M and the MHA Program] look really good nationally.his research is getting him, our program and the School of Public Health noticed nationally. His research is high quality, important, and interesting. Dr. Gentry went on to quote from two colleagues who co-nominated Dr. Ahn for the national award and who have been senior mentors for Dr. Ahn. Dr. Marcia Ory, Professor at Texas A&M School of Public Health and one of the most renowned aging researchers in the world, said Dr. Ahns s excellent health services research, especially related to evaluating the impact of evidence-based chronic disease programs for older adults, makes him very deserving of this award. He has added significantly to the health services literature on the ability of such programs to positively impact the triple aims of better health, better healthcare, and better value. And Dr. Craig Blakely, who was Dean while Dr. Ahn was pursuing his PhD at Texas A&M, and is now Dean of the School of Public Health at University of Louisville, remarked Dr. Ahn is gracious. He is the most gracious person I have spent any meaningful time with in my life. The significance of this is not linked to how easy it was for me to work with him. Rather, it is directly tied to his strength as a teacher and mentor to those students he comes in contact with every day. He is an incredibly warm and engaging person who can only find the constructive side of a conversation. Dr. Ahn s approach to research and scholarship is as a sponge, an aggressive learner who quickly picks up the most subtle of details; thorough, rarely leaves a stone unturned, appreciates context, can readily see other theoretical perspectives, and has the tools to tease things from the data; thoughtful, [taking the time] to be prepared and get it right; and, respectful, almost to a flaw, but always taking new insights from each interaction. Congratulations to Dr. Ahn! 11

Dr. Gentry and Dr. Ahn Dr. Gentry Announces the Creation of the David C. Burchfield Excellence in Teaching and Learning Award: On behalf of the Division of Health Systems Management and Policy, the MHA Program, the Health Systems and Policy PhD Program, and our MPH Concentration in Health Systems and Policy, I am pleased and proud to announce the creation of the David C. Burchfield Excellence in Teaching and Learning Award. This new award will be presented annually to the fulltime or adjunct faculty member who demonstrates the commitment and dedication to high quality teaching and learning that Dr. Burchfield has embodied throughout his faculty career at the University of Memphis. In addition to receiving this award for the academic year, the award is being named for Dr. Burchfield, in perpetuity. The graduating students in the Division of Health Systems Management and Policy will select the award recipient from among the entire fulltime and adjunct faculty that teach our MHA, HSP PhD, and MPH-HSP graduate students at the end of each academic year. Ms. Tiffany Champagne, the outgoing President of the MHA Student Association who worked with Dr. Gentry to inaugurate the award and coordinated the selection of Dr. Burchfield by her fellow graduating students, said On behalf 12

of my fellow cohort and classmates, we could not be more honored and thankful to have had Dr. Burchfield as our professor. He embodies what a professor should be, committed, supportive, and caring. He is highly invested in his courses, the University of Memphis MHA Program, and most importantly, his students and alumni. Words cannot express our gratitude for you, Dr. Burchfield. A good professor is hard to find, easy to love, and impossible to forget. Congratulations to Dr. Burchfield!
