Michael Vestino MHA 2007 Passionately involved in both his professional and academic life, Michael Vestino (class of 2007) has been active in the University s Health Service Management department, through his continued education, as well as student mentoring. Michael chose the University of La Verne for his Master s in Health Administration (MHA) degree because of its inherent flexibility, as well as for the proximity to his work as a key executive at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. The program allowed me to enter at the time that best worked for me...[allowing] me the required flexibility to balance my academic and work life. During the graduate degree process, Michael found La Verne s MHA program tailored to the working professional... the networking and peer relationships have become very valuable. Michael went on to teach in the MHA program, as well as becoming the faculty advisor to the Student Alumni Advisory Council. If that wasn t enough, Michael founded The Academy for the Advancement of Health Care Leaders (not a La Verne sponsored program), functioning to offer students the opportunity to be involved in healthcare leadership training and discussion... essentially it is mentoring, networking and a learning environment. Michael owes his passion for continued education to the premise of lifelong learning that La Verne defines and the support of my family. Actively involved in helping the MHA evolve further into a prominent major ( best in class prominence ), Michael s selfless nature clearly shines as he makes the time to give back to the University that helped launch my executive career. It is second in size only to the U.S. military and will create 28.6 million new jobs within the next twenty years. The Master of Health Administration (MHA) is designed to provide health services professionals with the key competencies and specialized knowledge to manage effectively in healthcare organizations. The MHA program shares and implements the University s commitment to personalized academic attention. Our small graduate classes enhance student-faculty learning and interaction. Program Delivery The MHA program consists of twelve courses (a total of 36 semester hours) offered on a ten-week accelerated term basis. The program is comprised of: Core Courses (15 semester hours) Concentration Courses (12 semester hours) Research and Culminating Courses (9 semester hours) Classes are held evenings and Saturdays to accommodate the schedule of working professionals. 8 Certificates In Health Administration - 18 Semester Hours (6 Courses) The University of La Verne offers graduate-level certificates in health administration addressing the needs of healthcare professionals. The certificate program is a flexible option that enables students to gain specific knowledge and expertise to enhance their job performance and careers. Courses completed in the Certificate Program are transferable to the Master of Health Administration program. 9 Academic Calendar Students attend classes through the University s ten-week accelerated term system. There are four terms in each academic year: Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer. New students may start their studies at the beginning of any term of their choice. A class schedule for the MHA program may be accessed through the Internet by going to: https://banweb.laverne.edu. Once there, click on the class schedule link and follow the prompts. Application Process To be eligible for acceptance into the MHA or Graduate Certificate program, an applicant must have: A bachelor s degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a minimum grade point average of 2.5 for the last 60 units of study. A statement of purpose. This is a written statement of goals and objectives for obtaining this specific degree, demonstrating the ability to write at an acceptable level for graduate study. Two letters of recommendation attesting to academic/ professional competency. A current résumé or curriculum vitae. Prerequisites include: One course in statistics prior to enrolling in HSM 595. La Verne s course HSM 594 Statistical Decision-Making in HSOs or equivalent course fulfills this requirement. One course in accounting systems prior to enrolling in HSM 502 and HSM 533. La Verne course HSM 593 Accounting for Healthcare Decision-Making or an equivalent course fulfills this requirement. Additional requirements as designated by the program may be more than the minimum criteria listed above. I was pleasantly surprised just how much the university was physically interwoven into the community. Reggie Mitchell MHA 2013 Enforcement Inspection Analyst Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education Most applicants have some experience in the healthcare field. Internships are recommended and may be arranged if an applicant has limited or no experience in the healthcare field. Tuition And Fees La Verne is an independent, nonsectarian and non-profit institution. The University tries to maintain low tuition in order to make higher education affordable to all potential students. The tuition rate charged will always be that rate which is current for the program in which the student is enrolled. Current tuition and fees for the MHA and Certificate programs are included in the application folder. Tuition payment plans are available. 9

10 University Policies And Services Transfer Credit Up to 12 semester hours of credit may be transferred into the MHA program from other accredited colleges or universities. Transfer credit must be appropriate for the degree. Transfer work must have been earned within the last five years with a grade of at least B to be accepted. A minimum of 24 semester hours of coursework must be taken at La Verne. Second La Verne Master s Degree Students who have completed a master s degree at La Verne and wish to earn a second degree at the University may transfer up to 21 La Verne graduate semester hours from the first degree to meet the requirements for the second degree with approval from the program chair. A new HSM 596 culminating activity must be part of the second degree program. Similarly, students may transfer up to nine La Verne graduate semester hours from another degree program into the Certificate in Health Administration program with approval from the program chair. Continuing Education Units Health Services Management courses fulfill the requirements for the California Board of Registered Nurses and the Clinical Laboratory Scientists (Medical Technologist). All courses with the HSM prefix are eligible to receive California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) provider units for continuing education. A three semester hour course equals 45 provider units. La Verne provider number is BRN Financial Aid Financial aid is available to students in the form of student loans. Students who wish to receive financial aid for their education should begin the application process at the time they apply for admission to the University of La Verne. Admission to the University is required before the financial aid application can be reviewed. Flexibility Flexibility at La Verne means that our approach to education is student-centered. In the MHA and Certificate Programs, we: Accept applications and admit qualified students all year long Hold evening and Saturday classes in accelerated ten-week terms Provide one-on-one academic advising Use technology to augment the traditional classroom experience Provide access to MyLaVerne where you are able to register for courses, check your grades, verify your GPA, view your transcript, change your address and phone numbers, and view your personal financial aid information. 10
