Orchard Press A Penn State Lehigh Valley Student Newspaper May 2009, Vol. 6, No. 3 Influential Journalist to Speak at Commencement by Lauren Coughlin Helen Thomas What does it take to make the President of the United States stumble when answering a question? Apparently, it takes a good journalist. Barack Obama was recently asked a question in a press conference that took him off guard, and had him baffled for a few moments. President Obama is known for his excellent communication skills and his response to this tough question was uncharacteristic of him. The woman, who asked the question at the press conference, was born in Winchester, Kentucky, on August 4, 1920, and grew up to be one of the most prominent figures in journalism. Her name is Helen Thomas and over her sixty-plusyear career she would cover many important events in American history. On Saturday, May 16, 2009, Ms. Thomas will be venturing on her third trip to the Lehigh Valley to speak at the Commencement of Penn State Lehigh Valley, here at the Fogelsville campus at 11 a.m. She was asked to speak at the Commencement because of all of her hard work and achievements she attained throughout her life, and is continuing to attain even today. Penn State Lehigh Valley Reference Librarian, Judy Sandt, anticipates the arrival of Helen Thomas and stated, We are absolutely thrilled to have Helen Thomas here with us to celebrate the accomplishments of our graduates. Over the years she has inspired so many of us, not only through her ground-breaking career accomplishments, but also because of her steadfast dedication to her principles. I hope she will inspire our students to go out and make the world a better place. Ms. Thomas s career started in Detroit when she graduated from Wayne State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree. After graduation, she immediately left Detroit and signed on as a copy girl for the Washington Daily News. In 1943 she left her previous job, and signed Cast your vote in renaming The Orchard Press on with the United Press International (UPI). Her career began writing newscasts transmitted over radio waves. Then after a few years under her belt, Ms. Thomas went on to have a prominent career in the government covering such agencies as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Education and Welfare, the Department of Health, Department of Justice and Capitol Hill. In 1961, Ms. Thomas went on the trail of President-elect John F. Kennedy, and she was assigned to the White House as a member of UPI where she served for thirtynine years. During this time period, Ms. Thomas became the first women to be assigned the White House Bureau Chief and watched eight different administrations come and go. Ms. Thomas was extremely active in many professional press organizations and paved the way for women struggling to make it in a profession that was historically male. Since women were sparse in the political game at this point in time, Ms. Thomas tried to level the playing field, and was one of the leaders who helped open the National Press Club and the Gridiron Club to female members. Eventually, Ms. Thomas was the first woman officer of the National Press Club and the president of the Press Club. She was once quoted as saying, There is no such thing as a news leak; a leak is legitimate news. Helen Thomas now works back in the White House, prying and probing at both President Barack Obama and his press secretary on a daily basis. She is continuously fighting to eliminate the discrimination still prevalent throughout journalism, and believes that the press helps maintain democracy by allowing the public to be informed on what is occurring in the government. Ms. Thomas has traveled the world following the presidents and was the only woman present when President Nixon made the initial trip to China. She has received many accolades and has been recognized frequently, including: Newspaper Woman of Washington by the American Newspaper Woman s Club, Woman of the Year in communications 1975 by Ladies Home Journal, The Matrix Award from Women in Communications, and was named one of the twentyfive most influential women in America by the World Almanac. Ms. Thomas has also received honorary degrees from four different academic institutions. Not only is Ms. Thomas an excellent journalist, but she has written numerous books as well. She also wrote the foreward for Associate Professor Nichola D. Gutgold s 2008 book Seen and Heard: The Women of Television News. It is quite an honor for Penn State Lehigh Valley q State of the Valley q Penn State Press Please your votes or other suggestions to Managing Editor Vince D Imperio at vwd5008@psu.edu to have the very talented Helen Thomas speak at its Commencement ceremony. The current students at Penn State are hoping to one day achieve success in the career path they chose. If success is what the students want, what would be better then to listen to someone who has attained it? v Champions Reload by John Holzer What s Inside Photo courtesy of pennlive.com After beginning the 2008 college basketball season at a frantic pace, the Penn State men s basketball team seemed poised for a successful year. Four months and thirty-eight games later, the Nittany Lions have managed to conclude what turned out to be a rollercoaster season on a high note, taking home the 2009 NIT championship. The Nittany Lions now look to reload and prepare for next season after graduating four seniors from this year s championship team. Among the departing seniors are forward Jamelle Cornley and guard Stanley Pringle, both of whom were key starters this season. Cornley and Pringle teamed together throughout the course of the season as an inside out tandem that carried a great deal of the team s overall offense. 2 2 Orchard Press May 2009 Business Students Enter Into International Fraternity by Jared Johnson The prospective future holds many potential avenues for success as our graduates leave Penn State Lehigh Valley for the corporate world. Being some of the best and brightest in their field, a select few seniors and juniors were given the opportunity to join the prestigious Sigma Beta Delta, the international honors society for Business, Management, and Administration. As the students enter into the workforce, they maintain the privileges of Sigma Beta Delta, including lifetime recognition of academic achievements, fellowship programs, networking opportunities, and lifetime contact through the Aspiration newsletter. On par with Penn State Lehigh Valley s honors program, Sigma Beta Delta only allows a few students in each year. In some instances, inductees hold membership in both the honors program and the business fraternity. A ceremony to introduce the new members was recently held in the Atrium of Penn State Lehigh Valley. As the ceremony began, Dr. Denise T. Ogden, president; Professor Mike Krajsa, co-advisor/vicepresident; Professor Michelle Kline, co-advisor/ vice-president; and Dr. John McCullough, secretary/ treasurer; each spoke words of praise for the hardworking new inductees. Following their praise for the new members of Sigma Beta Delta, each officer explained what it meant to be a member. Wisdom, honor, and pursuit of meaningful aspirations entailed From left to right, Dr. John McCoullogh, Ms. Michelle Kline, Dr. Denise Ogden, Kamaljit Kaur, Paul Berkowitz, Michele Hoback, Dr. Kenneth Thigpen, Lauren Bader, Michael Henahan, Michael DeFazio, Jason Palenchar, Stephen Rothrock, Perry Luft, and Mr. Michael Krajsa the persona of standing inductees of Sigma Beta Delta. Family, teachers, and friends watched as the future leaders of industry accepted their new identity as members. Standing upright, proud, and optimistic, each inductee smiled as their name was called, knowing that throughout their careers, they would be known for their intelligence and ability to quickly comprehend any new knowledge that might be used in future business practices. After the ceremony was complete and the juniors and seniors received a round of applause, everyone gathered around the refreshments and engaged in light banter with friends and loved ones. Children analyzed with delighted curiosity their loved ones material provided for the event. Older members of Sigma Beta Delta chatted with the newer members about the pride of being a member. Older members told of job opportunities, networking skills, and how being a member helped elevate them above other applicants applying for the same job. Being a Sigma Beta Delta can truly help a person in today s marketplace. Showcasing one s ability to handle difficult business concepts and situations, the new inductees are seen to be more hirable than the standard graduate. Dr. Robert Culp, professor of economics, says of Sigma Beta Delta, It s a good opportunity, valued experience, and employers look for it on a resume. Adding an edge to their potential for success, the graduating seniors and soon-to-be graduating juniors can take away from their exposure to the business honors fraternity the skills employers value and are essential for the working world. List of Inductees Seniors: Lauren Bader, Paul Berkowitz, Michael DeFazio, Michele Hoback, Kamaljit Kaur, Perry Luft, Jason Palenchar, Stephen Rothrock Juniors: Michael Henahan, Taksaporn Maseang Sean Heravi Brings New Leadership to SGA by Vincent D Imperio SGA President Sean Heravi and Vice President Peter Khoury First-year student Sean Heravi was elected President of the Student Government Association this past March. Along with his running mate, freshman Peter Khoury, this political science major hopes to bring strong leadership and an effective voice to the student body of Penn State Lehigh Valley. He has lots of confidence in his plans for SGA, coming from a large background in leadership positions, including serving as President of the Political Club, a member of the Student Facilities Fee Committee, and a member of the SGA Constitutional Revision Committee. But Heravi holds experiences even more impressive that make him that much more fitting for the job of SGA President. He served four years in the Infantry/Security Forces of the Marine Corps. Heravi s first three years were involved in FAST Co. (Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team Company), in which he was deployed to Guantanamo Bay twice, the first time for perimeter security between the U.S. Base and Sovereign Cuba, the second time for external security for the detainment facility s fifteen high-profile detainees. Shortly after, Heravi was deployed to Washington State to provide security for the U.S.S. Alabama, as well as work with the Department of Energy in Nevada. In his final year with the Marines, he was part of the unit, 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance, in which he helped train and prepare a platoon to go to Iraq. Heravi received many prestigious medals and citations during his service, including the Joint Service Achievement Medal from the Secretary of Defense, the Good Conduct Medal for serving three years without incident, and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, among others. Heravi explains that his time in the Marines taught him many valuable things. Along with leadership skills, discipline, honor, and commitment, it helped him realize the harsh reality of these international situations and the skill required to utilize military strategy. Heravi also volunteered for the Obama Campaign in 2008, working to energize the Nazareth community to get out and vote. He recalls that his experience in the campaign was interesting and he enjoyed meeting the community, going door-to-door and seeing people s reactions as he prompted them of political ideals. And once seeing that he was a veteran, many stubborn people were more willing to talk to him. Being a part of the campaign felt like being a part of history, Heravi said. It brought a lot of gratification, especially with the success of Obama s campaign. His interest in public service and motivation to help the community was the most important thing driving Heravi to run for SGA President. He feels a certain responsibility to be a contributing member of society, and that compounded with his need to make progress in SGA through reform and changes brought him to the forefront of this year s Student Government Presidential Election. My leadership skills could provide necessary tools to send SGA on a new path to success, he said. Heravi s regarded past experiences will certainly be put to good use during his time in office. I will never forget about my constituency and those I m leading, including what they all value and want out of their student government, Heravi said. He goes on to add that he will always look to the students for answers and use their ideas and suggestions to create a strong voice. He also includes that it s important to never be timid in speaking with authority figures on campus, but be able to still maintain discipline for the good of the school. Heravi and his running mate, Peter Khoury, have a bright future in mind for Penn State Lehigh Valley, something that may leave most students feeling optimistic about the unknowns of a new campus next year. Khoury is a biology major who spent his first semester at University Park, where he quickly got involved in Student Government, and eventually received the impressive Presidential Gold Volunteer Service award for having more than 250 hours of community service. Pete and I were working hard on the revision of the SGA Constitution and, since we both had the same understanding of how an ideal Student Government should operate, we decided to combine our visions on a ticket, said Heravi, explaining as to why he and Khoury teamed up for the election. Pete is an outstanding student leader whose work ethic reflects credit upon himself and the strength of the Penn State student body. New Leadership continued on p 3
3 May 2009 Orchard Press 3 Civic and Community Engagement Minor by Ashley Scheffler As many of you look further into your academic plan you will have to decide on a minor that fits your needs. Penn State Lehigh Valley has announced a new minor to be offered Fall 2009, at the new Center Valley location. Dr. Mary Hutchinson, Assistant Professor of ESL Education, met with the Academic Management Council to start the process of offering the minor to the students at Penn State Lehigh Valley. Through her initiative, Dr. Hutchinson established the Civic and Community Engagement minor, and is currently the faculty advisor at our campus. The minor, Civic and Community Engagement (CIVCM), will only require students to complete 18 credits of course work to fullfill the minor s requirements. A statement released by the University stated, Many of the courses offered are already part of a student s degree program and/or general credit requirements including a foundation course for the minor, YFE 211, which provides students with an orientation to public scholarship and explores contemporary themes and issues in civic and community engagement. Students then select other supporting courses and projects based on their interest and degree plans. A capstone experience allows students to integrate their experience in the minor in a final culminating project. By working the minor s requirements into students general education requirements, it allows for easy completion of the minor, and will yield less work. The Civic and Community Engagement minor is a benefit in other ways by focusing on community service and leadership. Dr. Hutchinson said she considers herself as an outreach scholar and someone whose research is focused on addressing needs of the community through civic engagement. She has dedicated her life to helping others saying, For almost twenty years I have focused my efforts on examining the impact of service-learning on students, primarily through their engagement with adult literacy and English language Heading to the United Nations by Sarah Rohrbach Many of our professors here at Penn State Lehigh Valley are renowned for their accomplishments. Some of these accomplishments include books, programs, speeches, etc. All of these accomplishments are life changing and absolutely amazing compared to the life of every college student and the fact that we can only wish that we had those achievements under our belt. But, what if you had the chance to attend a meeting of the United Nations? Would you accept it? Assuming you would, it would be an honor just to attend a meeting; but what if you were invited to give a speech on a topic that you were very passionate about a topic that had the ability to affect millions in many different ways. Our own Dr. Ana Figueroa has been invited to not only attend, but give a very invigorating speech about gender problems and globalization in Latin America and Spain. Figueroa is originally from Chili. Since she has been in the United States, she has made a successful name for herself as Assistant Professor of Spanish at Penn State Lehigh Valley. She was invited by Penn State alumni to speak about these very important and continually growing subjects. Figueroa explains that, Salsa did not originate in Spain or Latin America where a lot of people think that it did. Salsa originated in New York and not many people know that. Another example of gender problems and globalization is also placed within the world of the famous. For example, when an actor auditions for a certain role, it depends on where they are from that reflects the type of part they are going to get. For instance, someone like Penelope Cruz, who is learning issues. (Service-learning is an approach to teaching and learning that combines academic course content with meaningful community service.) The CIVCM minor provides an opportunity to expand this kind of work beyond my individual courses and encourage students to extend their education beyond the classroom to address issues and concerns of the local and global community. She strongly advocates for the minor and the benefits, both short and long term, which it will have for the students. The CIVCM minor not only makes a well-rounded student but it can also enhance a resume, making a student more attractive to potential employers. With this minor students combine principles, public related issues, and civic responsibility to further their academics and personal lives. This particular minor differs from many by requiring field work as part of the 18 credits needed for completion. During field work students obtain firsthand knowledge on civic responsibility and become familiar with current issues in the field. Students are also required to complete a final project, such as a paper or power point, that take an in depth look at issues raised and how they can be applied to a person s community. The issues studied throughout the courses broaden the student s learning experience and aid in their own development. The belief is that the CIVCM minor will enable students to take away more from their college experience and expand their own perspective. Dr. Hutchinson s thoughts were similar, Leadership is a natural extension of this kind of work as students find themselves more committed to finding ways to address community-based problems and make a better world for themselves and others. The minor offers a variety of benefits for students and has the ability to become a passion, as it has for Dr. Hutchinson. For those students who are interested, a complete description and list of requirements are available at civcom/about_the_minor.shtml. v from Spain would get the roles which depict the more sensual Spanish roles. In contradiction, Jennifer Lopez would get the parts that depict the stereotyped, Latin American individuals. This is reflecting the ways in which the different cultures were stereotyped in the past. Particularly, the Cuban Revolution of 1959 created an alternative way of performance masculinity in Latin America by helping to inspire a new, more politically engaged generation of men who came of age in the 1960s and attempted to put their social problems or their idealistic construction of society in dialogue with the pressing social-justice issues of the day. She continues that the new self that was constructed followed in the steps and imagery of Che Guevara, the French existentialists, and the American hippies not only in their political ideals but also in physical appearance and habits: long hair, beard, dark clothes, and cigarettes. Figueroa s study is centered on how this ideal male construction was repeated in the main characters of the 1960 novels known as the New Narrative of Latin America (Penn State Live). Figueroa has had two books published and is currently working on her third. Both of her already published pieces, as well as her third all have to do with gender problems and globalizations in the Spanish-speaking world. She earned her Ph.D. during the publication of her first book. Dr. Figueroa is a very smart and intelligent woman who deserves the utmost respect. She is a very personable individual and a wonderful professor. v New Leadership continued from p 2 The two of them have big ideas for Penn State Lehigh Valley next year, including a working, structured Senate for maximum productivity. With their work, Heravi and Khoury hope to increase student involvement, provide more organization and direct representation, and increase student unity, campus motivation, and community outreach. Regarding the new campus in Saucon Valley, things are still widely unknown; however, Heravi is sure that SGA will make the best use out of it and make sure that students are fully equipped in order to be well-transitioned when they move to University Park. Most importantly, Heravi believes that student welfare is never to be neglected. It s under these beliefs that everyone in the student body can feel more comfortable in the future of Penn State Lehigh Valley. v Chris s Tech Talk Redundancy Reduces Repercussions! by Christopher Lai Your laptop suddenly does not start up. What now? All your files are still in your laptop! Backing up your computer can save time and possibly money. How? That is a personal choice. Whether you have a FireWire external hard drive or a USB flash drive to copy information over, having a duplicate of your important files is essential to keep your information safe. However, copying and pasting your file to another location on the same hard drive is NOT reliably backing up. If you are unsure, here is some quick information to get you started: Flash drives are very easy to use, and are versatile. They typically hold up to 8GB. There are higher capacity flash drives, but they can get expensive very easily. Depending on which one you get, they usually go for around $10-$50. External hard drives are cheap for massive backup. Some require an external power source. Although bulkier, the price per GB is often lower than flash drives. Make sure that ports are compatible with your computer. Typical capacities range from 160GB-1TB (1000GB), and will cost around $60-$300. There are online backup services, but they are typically slow, limited by your internet connection. They come in both free and paid (monthly or yearly fee) options with various capacities. There are other ways to back up your system, including software and hardware that were not mentioned. Regardless of your backup method, it will prevent your data from being lost. v Answers to crossword in previous issue
4 4 Orchard Press May 2009 On the Mind: Prejudiced People are Colorblind: Let s Talk about Race, Baby by Valeria-Nina Tatlow, Psi Chi Vice President During Black History Month, Eric Holder said, Though this nation has proudly thought of itself as an ethnic melting pot, in things racial we have always been and I believe continue to be, in too many ways, essentially a nation of cowards. With his own appointment as this nation s first black attorney general, and less than a month from the historic inauguration of our nation s first black president, Holder s words may have left many Americans a little confused. Whether or not Mr. Holder was speaking from personal experience, or whether he had read the recent research is unclear, but what is clear is that he may be right! Evan P. Apfelbaum and Samuel R. Sommers of the Psychology department at Tufts University, and Michael I. Norton of Harvard Business School, collaborated on a research study which set out to prove the proposition that, when placed in the ambiguous and often threatening context of race-relevant interaction, one approach many whites adopt is strategic colorblindness: avoidance of talking about race or even acknowledging racial difference in an effort to avoid the appearance of bias. According to the APA press release on the study, in one of four of the experiments conducted, 101 white undergraduate students were paired with either a white or black female partner who pretended to be another participant. The pairs were presented with 30 photographs of faces that varied in race, gender, and background color. Each white participant s objective was to guess which of the photographs the partner was holding by asking as few yes-or-no questions as possible. On the Mind is a regular feature in which members of Psi Chi write articles on psychology. Penn State Alum s Key to Success by Taylor Pany Tim Brion poses with his children atop the Nittany Lion. As many of us know, Penn State University has the largest Alumni Association in the country. Years after graduation, alums of all ages stay highly involved in Penn State activities and organizations throughout all of the several campuses. Tim Brion, a 1997 graduate from Penn State, is one of the thousands of people who take pride in being an alum. Brion, who now owns a State Farm Insurance agency, reaches out to students and other alums here at Penn State Lehigh Valley. Even though he attended the DuBois campus and graduated from University Park, he values the importance of networking with and guiding fellow Penn Staters. Even though asking about the race of the person in the photograph was a sound strategy for completing the task, white participants were far less likely to do so with a black versus a white partner. Moreover, when the black partner was the first one to have a turn asking questions, whether she mentioned race had a dramatic effect. White participants whose black partner asked about race mentioned race on their own turn 95 percent of the time; when the black partner never asked about race, white participants only did so 10 percent of the time. According to the study, Whites avoidance of race during interracial interaction also led to negative interpersonal perceptions on the part of black observers, the most noteworthy of which was the belief that such an approach was actually indicative of greater racial prejudice. The authors point out that many of the individuals who exhibit colorblindness are not racists, but merely believe that employing such a strategy helps them appear less bias. Unfortunately, the opposite is true and the researchers suggest that, white would be better served by employing alternative strategies, such as simply talking about race when it s clearly relevant or, more generally, engaging in affiliative behaviors in order to communicate positive interracial intentions. Hilary Shelton, vice president of the NAACP said, Nobody wants to be considered a coward. We ve learned to get along by exclusion and silence. We need to talk about it. People need to feel comfortable saying the wrong things, and I agree, so, let s talk about race v In college, Brion didn t major in business like most might think; he majored in History with a minor in Spanish. This unique background led him to receive offers from three different companies upon graduation. He recalls that if it weren t for career services at Penn State, he wouldn t have had such a broad accessibility to job offerings. In fact, he attended about interviews before being offered those three openings. His final decision was to work at Lutron Electronics in their Domestic Sales department. Soon after, his Spanish background helped him get a step up, and he was now working in the department of international sales, based mostly in Latin America. This new position allowed him to travel and was full of great opportunities. When he got engaged though, he realized that constantly traveling was not a good start to a marriage, and he was ready to look for a stationary job. Lucky for him, that job happened to be at a State Farm insurance agency. When you buy an agency in the insurance industry, it is typically when the owner retires. At some companies, they make you build an entirely new, and unique to you, client base. Luckily, Brion inherited about half of the previous owners clientele. His family was growing and was grateful for finally having flexibility with time at State Farm. He said, the best part about owning my own business is the flexibility in that I never have to miss any of my kid s soccer games or birthday parties. Brion confesses that he never actually thought about getting into the insurance business, but he grabbed the opportunity. On the Lighter Side: Laughter the Natural Medicine by Amanda Wessner In the absence of light there is dark. In the absence of laughter there is silence. It s funny how a little laughter can liven up a whole room or just make someone s day better. Laughter has a unique ability to uplift a person s spirits, relaxing people, and easing anxiety. Cheerful people who respond more readily to laughter have more emotional resilience and have closer relationships. There are many myths about laughter that are not true or have not been scientifically proven. One of these myths is that humor is not just psychologically beneficial, but also cures diseases. Ancient Greek Philosopher Aristotle believed that laughter was a bodily exercise precious to health. But laughter has little influence on the physical fitness of the person. It does on the other hand affect a person s psyche and elevates their mood. In a 2008 study published by neuroscientist Wolfgang Grodd (Germany), he found that cheerfulness was associated with activation of lateral cortical brain regions. Researchers believe that this characterizes a cheerful person who enjoys ambiguity and amusement. Laughter has many benefits to people. One of these benefits is that it actually helps to buffer a person over an emotional crisis such as a death of a loved one. It allows you to see the silver lining in disappointments. This goes to show that even in somber or serious times in life, there is always room for a little laughter. Besides being able to better cope with negativity, laughter can also help with pain management. But this pain management technique does not require laughter, but rather humor and enjoyment. Research studies have showed that after being exposed to humorous acts, a person s resistance to pain will increase. This Key to Success continued on p 7 Laughter continued on p 5
