S p r i n g SANDERSON FARMS NEWS A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT Dear Associates, Net sales for the first quarter of fiscal 2011 were $427.7 million compared with $420.1 million for the same period a year ago. For the quarter, the company had a net loss of $33.6 million compared with net income of $15.8 million for the first quarter of fiscal e Company's results for the first quarter of fiscal 2011 include a charge of $22.3 million, before income taxes, to reduce the value of live inventory from cost to market. Excluding this adjustment, the net loss for the first quarter of fiscal 2011 was $19.2 million. e results for the first quarter were influenced by a number of factors. Overall, we experienced lower poultry market prices than the same period a year ago, primarily due to an oversupply of chicken. While retail demand for chicken has remained steady, we have continued to see weak food service demand, and I expect this trend will remain until the national unemployment rate improves. Consumers are simply not dining out as frequently and restaurant traffic has remained under pressure. We experienced a significant increase in feed costs during the quarter, compared with a year ago, and this affected our profitability. Escalating Lampkin Butts President and Chief Operating Officer grain prices, especially for corn, are at near-record levels. e U.S. Department of Agriculture recently reported that corn supplies are at their tightest levels in 15 years. Prices paid for corn increased 42.9 percent and soybean meal prices increased 4.4 percent, the Company's primary feed ingredients. ese price increases reflect lower yields of both corn and soybeans during the 2010 crop year and uncertainty regarding the size and quality of the 2011 crop. While market conditions have been challenging, I am pleased with the successful start-up of our new Kinston, North Carolina facility. is project was completed on time and on budget and, as planned, we began processing chickens in Kinston in January At full capacity, which is expected to be reached early next year, the Kinston complex will employ approximately 1,500 people and will be equipped to process and sell 6.7 million pounds per week of dressed poultry meat. I look forward to the new marketing opportunities the Kinston plant will provide for Sanderson Farms as we embark on our next phase of growth. continued on page 3

A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT continued from page 1 In addition to the Kinston facility, we previously announced our intention to develop and construct a second North Carolina complex this year. While the Company continues to evaluate various alternatives for a suitable location, we have determined it is in the best interest of Sanderson Farms and its shareholders to delay construction of this project. In light of escalating prices for feed grains and the very tight supply of corn in particular, we believe it prudent to delay construction of the second North Carolina facility until we have better visibility around the 2011 feed grain crops in the United States. While the Company's balance sheet is strong and we remain committed to the second North Carolina complex, I believe it is prudent to be conservative with our working capital and balance sheet at this time. is year will be a challenging year for Sanderson Farms and our industry. We believe the economic uncertainties and unemployment issues facing our nation will continue to have a significant influence on consumer spending habits. We and our industry are facing significantly higher costs for grain for the coming year. However, I remain confident in our ability to face these headwinds and to operate our business well. We enter this particular cycle in our business with a very strong balance sheet. Our philosophy is to continue to manage Sanderson Farms for the long term, recognizing that our primary responsibility as a public company is to protect the interests of our shareholders and to reward them for their investment in Sanderson Farms. While market conditions remain uncertain until grain stocks are rebuilt, the economic recovery gains traction and people return to work, I have many reasons to be optimistic about our future. We sell a high quality, affordable product that consumers enjoy; we have outstanding young managers and employees who run our operations efficiently and provide exceptional product quality and service to an expanding customer base; our contract producers help us maintain our position as a low-cost producer; our financial position is strong; and, finally, we have demonstrated our confidence in the long-term success of Sanderson Farms with our plans to make a considerable investment in a second new complex in North Carolina that will offer important opportunities for our employees and new independent contract producers, new customers, and greater value for our shareholders. I want to acknowledge the value of everyone associated with Sanderson Farms our board of directors, managers, employees and contract producers whose dedication and commitment to excellence provide us with confidence for continued success. Sincerely, Lampkin Butts President and Chief Operating Officer Spring

Leading with Vision: The Goal Jennifer Rogers Leading With Vision: The Goal teaches participants how to increase their effectiveness in the workplace. In order to be more effective, each of us first must understand our own natural behavioral tendencies, then be able to discern the natural tendencies of those that we work with every day. Participants were taught the characteristics of each of the four styles of behavior: Dominance, Influential, Steady, and Conscientious. Each style has its own strengths and weaknesses. If we understand each other s behavioral style, we will communicate effectively with others, build trust, and develop cooperation. We can adapt our natural tendencies to meet the needs of others. By putting into practice the skills presented in the workshop, each individual can become more effective, resulting in a stronger, more competitive organization. 12 Spring 2011

Participants practice the skill of listening, through experiential learning activities, to improve their performance and become more effective. Participants were also taught the value of building trust, including being worthy of others trust, being respectful, understanding the strengths and weaknesses of others, supporting one another, and team spirit. 22 GROWERS BRAZOS Perry Mizell Farm Robert Jordan, Broiler Supervisor Perry and Suzette Mizell got their first batch of birds in December of Their farm consists of eight solid side walls houses with top of the line equipment. The Mizell farm is managed solely by their family, which consists of Morgan and Tiffany Gerhart, son-in-law and daughter; their baby son, Paden Gerhart; and Katelyn Mizell, daughter of Perry and Suzette. Before getting into the chicken business, Perry worked for West Marlin Coal for 23 years. When asked why he decided to go into the poultry business, he replied, The shift work got old and I have always wanted to work for myself. I have always been a farmer/rancher. Perry enthusiastically stated what the future plans are for his farm: We are looking to add four more new houses. Perry and Suzette have been married for 30 years; they love the lifestyle and feel very blessed. One blessing they have received for entering into the poultry business is that it has allowed them to expand other family businesses such as their hay production business. Using chicken litter from their houses to fertilize their grass instead of buying commercial fertilizer has tremendously cut their expenses.
