In addition to the work as National Coordinator of UNEP in Uruguay I also worked as program analyst in the UNEP UN-REDD team. These new responsibilities are related to UN-REDD programs in Paraguay, Ecuador and other activities being conducted in the Latin American and the Caribbean region by UNEP UN-REDD. Tasks include supporting countries in programme formulation, monitoring and execution of projects, interaction with partner agencies, government representatives and involved stakeholders (including Indigenous Peoples, and other civil society organizations). Involvement in all these tasks has been through teleconferences, retreats, workshops and country missions. Formulation; coordination of UNEP component; technical advice. $ ; UNEP component $ Consultation on risks and benefits of a REDD process in Argentina. Coordination; technical advice. $ UNEP, Uruguay. I have acted as National Coordinator of UNEP activities in the country (described below). During this period I also participated in the organization and coordination of the GEF meeting in Uruguay and the Mercury negotiations, both of which took place in Punta del Este. In addition, as Uruguay was a pilot ONE UN country and I was a member of the UNCT, I also participated during missions from the Executive Directors of UNDP, UNEP, UNIDO, UNWOMEN, FAO and the Secretary General of the UN UNEP liaison, Uruguay. Within the framework of the United Nations Reform I have coordinated UNEPs involvement in Uruguay. This coordination included the formulation, fundraising, supervision and execution of UNEPs projects in Uruguay. Liaison work included participation in UNCT (United Nations Country Team) and interactions with government officials. Administrative, programmatic and communication activities were done in coordination with several other UN agencies at the country level. Work included the formulation of project proposals, outreach activities, administrative coordination, and project supervision among others. UNEPs profile has been substantially raised and there has been an increase in fundraising. In 2007 UNEP had 4-5 projects in Uruguay with a total budget below USD; in 2009 it has 9-10 projects with a budget over USD and close collaboration with government and UN agencies. Project themes have ranged from sustainable public procurement to mainstreaming environment into poverty reduction programs, sustainable production and consumption strategy building, climate change mitigation and adaptation, waste management, agricultural issues, sustainable construction, chemicals, coastal management, etc. During these years I also coordinated 1 national and 6 urban environmental assessments (GEO reports), reviewed the regional assessment for Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) and authored 2 of the 3 chapters of the Atlas of our Changing Environment: Latin America and the Caribbean, one of UNEPs flagship publications ( Consultant, UNEP. As part of UNEPs strategic assessment for increased coherence and impact at the country level I conducted a review of CCA/UNDAFs, PRSP, PCNA/PDNA, environmental assessments, national development strategies, MDG implementation plans for 15 countries in the LAC region. The assignment included reviewing existing documentation, extracting key information related to UNEPs involvement and impact and analyzing how environmental issues have been positioned in each document and the coherence of UN involvement in relation to national strategic planning Senior Analyst, CLAES. CLAES is one of UNEPs collaborating centres in LAC. During my time in CLAES I supervised all UNEP projects, both national and regional. I coordinated the GEO Tracking tool, designed to keep other collaborating centres and the Division of Early Warning and Assessment (DEWA) in LAC up to 2
3 date on the latest scientific publications related to the main environmental issues in the region. I was Coordinating Lead Author for chapter 1 of UNEPs Global Environmental Assessment (GEO-4), coordinating a team of more than a dozen experts worldwide; I worked for the GEO MERCOSUR; I coordinated the GEO Uruguay report including the drafting of several chapters; finally I also cocoordinated the first stages of GEO-LAC 2009 until I became liaison for UNEP in Uruguay. Other duties related to the formulation of project proposals, writing reports, outreach material, press releases, and acting as liaison with Government and representing civil society organizations in national fora Post Doctorate, University of Southern California (USC). During my post-doct I worked in planning and designing a protected areas system for southern California. Connectivity is one of the main challenges for conservation in the Los Angeles Region. The proposed protected areas system was elaborated in a multidisciplinary team based on GAP analysis, focal species, remote sensing and matrix permeability. My role was to strengthen the scientific bases of the project, to identify conservation potential of certain areas, analyze connectivity, identify focal species and help understand local communities perspectives of protected areas and associated fauna Use and perceptions of an urban park in Puente Hills, California. Designed and coordinated a project to understand the main uses and perceptions of users of a periurban protected area in Los Angeles. I designed the survey instrument and coordinated its implementation. The project successfully identified main users, existing and potential conflicts, and perceptions of nature and the park. It also provided all requested information for the park s communication and management strategies Perceptions and use of protected areas in the Orange County coast. Designed the methodology and survey instrument to identify the attitudes of users of recreational and protected areas in the coastal area Urban planning and nature conservation through a participatory exercise. In the context of the Man and the Biosphere program, with partial funding from UNESCO I consulted local population, including an innovative combination of mapping technique using GIS, landscape perception analysis and quantitative research Part time faculty, Environmental Geography Professor Part time faculty, Environmental Studies Professor Research Assistant, Research Associate, D3E (Development, Ecology, Economy y Equity).
