4 PRE-CONGRESS COURSES AND WORKSHOPS PRE-CONGRESS COURSES AND WORKSHOPS Publication training W1 Tuesday, 9 th September 2014, , Wednesday, 10 th September 2014, , room 12, floor 3 Course description: Evidence-based medicine cannot exist without reliable data from clinical trials. We would like to create this medicine with research conducted in our country and especially research in our specialty. However, so far Polish anesthesiologists have only a marginal impact on the development of evidence based medicine. Why is it happening? The answer is very simple. To create contemporary evidence-based medicine, it is necessary to face a real challenge - begin to publish scientific papers in the journals indexed by the Philadelphia Institute. Publication in a renowned international scientific journal with a high impact factor is not easy, but it is a source of great satisfaction, it advances the authors scientific career and it could make its authors suddenly recognizable around the world. Scientific work published in a good journal quickly begins to be cited and the presented information can soon become a commonplace of the whole scientific community. The aim of our workshop is to teach writing and assessing scientific papers. This is a unique and a very specific knowledge. How to recognize good and poor quality papers? How to choose the appropriate journal for publication? What are the sections of a scientific paper? How to avoid common mistakes in the publication process and how to communicate effectively with the editorial team? After a series of lectures, participants will be divided into small groups to apply this knowledge in practical exercises. This two-day course (requiring good knowledge of English) will be led by Prof. Elisabeth Wager from UK, medical writer, editor, trainer, and publications consultant, involved in workshops called Masterclass in Scientific Writing, organized regularly by the European Society of Anaesthesiology for young anaesthesiologists interested in scientific writing. It is worth mentioning that within the ESA Council, this initiative came primarily from the representatives of the Visegrad Group countries Poland, Chech Republic, Slovak Republic and Hungary. This year we have a unique opportunity, because in order to take part in such a course there is no need to go to Brussels it is enough to come to Wisła! This outstanding workshop will be organized under the auspices of Abbvie. This company is strongly associated with education in scientific development of our young anesthesiologists. The best proof for that is their recently launched training course for young anaesthesiologists called Club 35.

6 PRE-CONGRESS COURSES AND WORKSHOPS PRE-CONGRESS COURSES AND WORKSHOPS Workplace Related Stress - Psychological Workshop W2 Wednesday, 10 th Thursday 2014, , room 1, floor 8 Course description: We live in a fast paced society when we do everything quickly and the boundaries between work and private life tend to disappear. A daily plan is an of endless list of duties where there is no time for rest, so important for the anaesthesiologists, as their daily work is full of stress. The consequences of such a lifestyle may be devastating and result in somatic and psychiatric disorders such as burnout and addictions, ultimately limiting the ability to work. If you would like to learn how you may easily avoid these problems, we invite you to participate in a workshop, where you can anonymously check if you are not already burned out and then under the supervision of specialists you will learn what are the rules of good teamwork, how to cope with stress, what are the basic relaxation techniques and how to avoid conflicts at work. 8 PRE-CONGRESS COURSES AND WORKSHOPS PRE-CONGRESS COURSES AND WORKSHOPS Ultrasound in Regional Anaesthesia W3 Tuesday, 9 th September, , Wednesday, 10 th September 2014, , room 6, floor 4 Ultrasound in Regional Anaesthesia COURSE FOR ANAESTHETISTS under the auspices of the Polish Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Therapy Course required by the Polish Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Therapy for the use of ultrasound in Regional Anaesthesia. Course based on workshops in a small group (max. 5 participants). Ultarsound examinations will be conducted on healhty volunteers, needle techniques will be taught on training phantoms. Course description: Ultrasound is used in regional anesthesia for the past 15 years, but only recently has it become extremely popular among anaesthesiologists. It allows for the implementation of regional blockade under direct visualization in real time. As a result it is possible to control the insertion and the final position of of the needle and the injection site of the local anesthetic. To achieve these objectives it is necessary to gain appropriate skills in manipulating the needle in relation to the ultrasound probe. It allows for both tracking the position of the needle and for interpretation of the sonographic view in the anesthetized area with the assessment of target nerve structures. It should be emphasized that the use of ultrasound does not preclude the use of other methods of monitoring the course of anesthesia or confirming safety of regional blockade, such as aspiration before each injection of the regional anesthetic, the use of addition of adrenaline as a marker of intravascular injection, assessment of the required injection pressure, paying attention to the symptoms reported by the patient or finally the use of electrical nerve stimulation. Participation in this two-day workshop, based mainly on practical exercises in small groups, will allow one to achieve real medical benefits from use of ultrasound in regional anaesthesia. It should increase the proportion of successful procedures, reduce the risk of complications arising from needle manipulations, reduce the dose of the local anesthetic, shorten the time required to perform regional anaesthesia, as well as reduce the invasiveness of the procedure. Participants of this course will obtain certification of the Polish Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Therapy necessary touse ultrasound in regional anesthesia. This workshop will be organized under the auspices of OPTOtech Medical i Aesculap-Chifa. These companies have many regional anesthesia products in their portfolio and decided to be involved in medical education in this field.

12 PRE-CONGRESS COURSES AND WORKSHOPS PRE-CONGRESS COURSES AND WORKSHOPS Ultrasound in Intensive Care W4 Tuesday, 9 th September, , Wednesday, 10 th September, , room 5, floor 4 Ultrasound in Intensive Care and Emergencies COURSE FOR ANAESTHETISTS under the auspices of the Polish Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Therapy Course required by the Polish Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Therapy for use of ultrasound in Intensive Care and Emergencies Course based on workshops in a small group (max. 5 participants) Ultrasound examinations will be conducted on healhty volunteers, vessel cannulation techniques will be taught on training phantoms. Course description: Ultrasound is revolutionizing our medical specialty today. Echocardiography, lung and abdominal ultrasound, or assessment of the optical nerve diameter are only a few examples of ultrasound applications in the ICU and in emergency medicine. Immediate bedside diagnosis of life-threatening emergencies with ultrasound allows to institute appropriate treatment and to immediately assess its effectiveness. Ultrasoundguided invasive procedures (such as central vein cannulations and thoraco- or pericardio-centesis) start to replace blind landmark techniques. Until recently, ultrasound examination was performed mainly by radiologists and cardiologists, however the introduction of new portable machines and goal-directed protocols popularized ultrasound use by physicians representing various medical disciplines. As a result portable ultrasound is rapidly becoming a modern stethoscope and an essential diagnostic tool in daily practice for anesthesiologists and intensivists. Independent use of this tool in a competent manner however, requires necessary knowledge and skills. Participation in this two-day workshop will be based mainly on practical exercises in small groups and will allow to achieve real medical benefits from use of ultrasound in the intensive care and for life-threatening conditions. Workshops will be carried out by a team of experienced instructors and led by Dr Paweł Andruszkiewicz, President of the Section of Ultrasound and Echocardiography of the Polish Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care. It will take a form of another Critical Ultrasound course, which is very popular among anaesthesiologists in Poland. Participants of this course will obtain certification of the Polish Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Therapy for theuse of ultrasound in the intensive care and life-threatening conditions. This workshop will be organized under the auspices of Philips. This company is a manufacturer of excellent equipment dedicated to the needs of anesthesiology and intensive care and also decided to be involved in education of ultrasound for the intensivists.

15 PRE-CONGRESS COURSES AND WORKSHOPS Mechanical Ventilation Wednesday, 10 th September 2014, , room 13, 14, 15, floor 2 W5 Course description: Although intermittent positive pressure ventilation is still a primary method of respiratory support modern ventilators are becoming increasingly complex and their full capabilities are usually not utilized by physicians in the ICU. Better and more precise pulmonary imaging, continuous measurement of physical parameters of mechanical ventilation and a thorough knowledge of pathomechanisms leading to ventilation-induced lung injury greatly increased the role played by the modern ventilator as a tool in the treatment of critically ill patients. The program of this workshop was created after consultation with Prof. Dariusz Maciejewski, the most outstanding Polish expert in mechanical ventilation. At the start we will present basic techniques of mechanical ventilation and issues related to non-invasive ventilation. Later leading manufacturers of modern ventilators (Covidien, Dräger, GE Healthcare / Promed, Hamilton Medical / Ekomark, and Maquet) will present technical solutions used in the latest generation of their flagship products. The workshop will be conducted by prominent experts who have spent many years dealing with issues related to mechanical ventilation. The course will be organized under the joint patronage of Covidien, Dräger, GE Healthcare / Promed, Hamilton Medical / Ekomark and Maquet. These companies are major manufacturers of respiratory equipment for the ICU in our market and they compete with each other on a daily basis but today they decided to join forces and get involved in the education in mechanical ventilation for the anaesthesiologists. 18 PRE-CONGRESS COURSES AND WORKSHOPS PRE-CONGRESS COURSES AND WORKSHOPS Advanced Hemodynamic Monitoring Wednesday, 10 th September 2014, , room 4, floor 5 W6 Course description: The aging population with increasing number of co-morbidities leads to the emergence of more and more patients with a higher risk of undergoing anesthesia. This situation requires the use of more precise hemodynamic monitoring tools - both in the operating room and in the intensive care units. As a result of these changes advanced hemodynamic monitoring is widely used today not only in centers treating patients with cardiovascular disease. Invasive monitoring remains a gold standard as the most reliable but it is invariably associated with a higher risk of all sorts of complications. With the development of technology many other reliable methods of less invasive monitoring are becoming available and the choice today is very broad. The method used is determined by the type of surgery, the patient, and sometimes - simply the availability of particular equipment in the hospital. Interpretation of the results requires profound knowledge of the specificity of various monitoring methods which should be properly matched to the specific clinical situation. As the available methods are now broad it is sometimes difficult to make a rational choice. Participation in the workshops in the field of advanced hemodynamic monitoring will help to choose the right method of monitoring in your daily practice. Lectures, practical exercises and case presentations will be conducted by experts from the centers already having extensive experience in the field. There will be numerous presentations of cases. The methodology of the course is totally innovative - during previous conferences and symposia this issue has never been analyzed in such a comprehensive and detailed manner. The course will be attended by an exceptionally large group of lecturers from various centers in Poland. Their activities will be coordinated by Prof. Ewa Kucewicz-Czech from the Silesian Center for Heart Diseases in Zabrze and by Prof. Paweł Sobczyński from the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care at the Medical University in Poznań. 29 PRE-CONGRESS COURSES AND WORKSHOPS Difficult Airway Management Wednesday, 10 th September 2014, , room 11, floor 3 W9 WORKSHOPS FOR ANAESTHESIOLOGISTS AND EMERGENCY MEDICINE PHYSICIANS Under the auspices of the Section of Airway Management of the Polish Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Course based on workshops in small groups (each group max.5 participants) Course description: The can t intubate can t ventilate situation is one stressful, resulting in mortality directly attributed to anesthesia. Anesthetic assessment before anesthesia allows to predict the difficulty of intubation and prepare tools for difficult intubation available in the workplace. However, there are patients in whom the available scale does not indicate difficult intubation, while direct laryngoscopy completely fails to show the entry to the trachea. It is worth to be prepared for such difficult situations therefore we invite you to participate in our workshop on the difficult airway management. The programme of this workshop was prepared by Prof. Tomasz Gaszyński together with a team of experienced lecturers. Course participants will be able to learn about the available equipment for difficult intubation and how to appropriately use this equipment. Afterwards participants will have hands-on experience by repeatedly intubating mannequins using these tools. This will allow the participants to become familiar with the procedures that should help them to keep calm and ensure the safety of the patient. 31 PRE-CONGRESS COURSES AND WORKSHOPS From Diagnosis to Treatment - Infections in the ICU Wednesday, 10 th September 2014, , room 2, floor 5 W10 Course description: In the era of multiple vaccinations civilized countries have greatly reduced or even eliminated all most dangerous infectious diseases. Unfortunately, today this place begins to be filled with the epidemic of sepsis. This is due to an aging population, the prevalence of chronic diseases, immune system disorders and frequent use of antibiotics. Inappropriate use of antibiotics may also sometimes result from insufficient or outdated medical knowledge. This in turn leads to the development of multidrug-resistant microorganisms. Proper control and diagnosis of infections as well as the rational use of antibiotics are the key elements of a properly functioning ICU. It is always worth to verify and update medical knowledge in this area. Congress atendees interested in this subject are invited to participate in this excellent pre-congress course run by experts in this field. During this course participants will be able to gain a complete understanding of the pathomechanisms of infection and sepsis, modern microbiological diagnostics and the principles of appropriate antibiotic selection and treatment. The course will be organized under the auspices of Pfizer. This company is not only a manufacturer of many drugs used to fight the most dangerous pathogens in the ICU and would like to become involved in the education in microbiology and antibiotic therapy for anesthesiology and intensive care physicians. PRE-CONGRESS COURSES AND WORKSHOPS Andrzej Kübler - Clinical Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care, Medical University in Wroclaw Małgorzata Mikaszewska-Sokolewicz - Clinical Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, Medical University of Warsaw Tomasz Ozorowski - National Programme for the Protection of Antibiotics, National Drugs Institute in Warsaw Ewa Trejnowska - Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care, Provincial Medical Center in Opole Agnieszka Misiewska-Kaczur - Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care, Hospital of Silesia in Cieszyn Maciej Nowacki - Medical Manager Pfizer Polska sp. z o.o., Warsaw Sponsored by Pfizer.

33 PRE-CONGRESS COURSES AND WORKSHOPS Perioperative Optimalisation of Coagulation Wednesday, 10 th September 2014, , room 7, floor 4 W11 Course description: Coagulation is a complex process involving platelets, clotting factors and plasma. Problems associated with haemostasis are very important for physicians involved in perioperative medicine. Coagulation disorders due to genetic mutations are present in tens of thousands of Poles, but there are around 250,000 new cases of acute coronary syndromes in Poland every year, so even more important is a group of patients with platelet dysfunction caused by antiplatelet agents. Oral anticoagulants are also increasingly used therefore anesthesiologists often have to face problems associated with the diagnosis and treatment of various types of coagulation disorders. Although knowledge of the coagulation system, diagnosis of coagulation disorders and drugs affecting haemostasis is difficult and extensive, every problem can be presented in a simple and understandable way. Congress atendees interested in this subject are invited to participate in this excellent pre-congress course run by experts in this field. Course participants will be able to gain a comprehensive knowledge of coagulation system, diagnosis of coagulation disorders and drugs affecting haemostasis as well as become familiar with the current guidelines on the management of severe perioperative bleeding. The excellent team of experts will try to present these issues in a simple and understandable way. This pre-congress course will be organized under the auspices of Baxter. This company is not only a manufacturer of many drugs used in the management of coagulation disorders and bleeding and would like to become involved inthe education in the field of coagulation disorders for anesthesiology and intensive care physicians. PRE-CONGRESS COURSES AND WORKSHOPS Waldemar Machała - Clinical Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, Medical University of Lodz Łukasz Krzych - Clinical Department of Cardiac Anesthesia and Intensive Care, Medical University of Silesia in Katowice Teresa Iwaniec - 2 nd Clinical Department of Internal Medicine, Jagiellonian University in Cracow Jerzy Ratajczak - Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care, M. 35 PRE-CONGRESS COURSES AND WORKSHOPS Workshop on Therapeutic Hypothermia Wednesday, 10 th September 2014, , room 8, floor 4 W12 Course description: Therapeutic hypothermia, defined as the controlled decrease of core body temperature to C for hours, is one of the few interventions that improve survival after cardiac arrest with a satisfactory neurological outcome. Current resuscitation guidelines recommend the use of therapeutic hypothermia in all patients after cardiac arrest (regardless of rhythm or location), which remain comatose after resucitation. Unfortunately, according to a recent survey, the proportion of intensive care units using therapeutic hypothermia in Poland is currently only 21.7%. This situation should improve soon as therapeutic hypothermia procedure is now additionally financed by Polish healthcare system. One of the conditions for obtaining such funding is, however, undergoing a certified training. Congress Organizers decided to facilitate the implementation of this requirement and offer a certified training course in therapeutic hypothermia, as one of our precongress courses. Anaesthesiologists from the Upper Silesian Medical Centre in Katowice, who were the first in our country to use therapeutic hypothermia, will present the pathophysiology of changes occurring after cardiac arrest and the current position of hypothermia in resuscitation guidelines. Further they will present the practical aspects of carrying out the procedure - its course, phases and potential complications. During this pre-congress course participants will become familiar with the equipment and all the methods of therapeutic hypothermia available in Poland. The course will be organized under the joint patronage of Bard, Polimed, Medica VERA, Veromed. These companies are important manufacturers of therapeutic hypothermia equipment and products on our market and they compete with each other on a daily basis. This time however, they decided to join forces and get involved in the education of anaesthesiologists and intensive care phycicians in the field of therapeutic hypothermia. PRE-CONGRESS COURSES AND WORKSHOPS Wojciech A. Rychlik - Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care with cardiological supervision, GCM in Katowice Janusz Siedy - Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care with cardiological supervision, GCM in Katowice Sponsored by Bard, Polimed, Medica VERA, Veromed
