The program is research based, at a professional high international level and it provides a platform for lifelong learning. The bachelor program in mechanical engineering is a three-year foundation program of 180 ECTS over six semesters. PROGRAM CONTENT, STRUCTURE AND PROGRESSION The program in mechanical engineering is based on a solid foundation in mathematics and natural science which provide the necessary tools for mastering the more technical courses later in the program. The basic subjects (G) come early in the progression of the courses. To create a feeling of identity and belonging to the field of mechanical engineering, technical courses (T) are also placed early in the program. There is an increasing emphasis on mechanical engineering and materials technology subjects throughout the program. The aim is to enable the students to select materials, develop, design and determine dimensions for structures and components. Important topics are material characteristics, structural behaviour and design criteria. Electives (V) and social studies subjects (S) are placed toward the end of the program where a possible study period abroad can be fitted in. The final project, the bachelor assignment (paper) (B) of 15 ECTS, may be carried out individually or in groups. In order to be assigned a topic for a bachelor paper, satisfactory progression must be demonstrated as cited in Regulations for Bachelor's thesis. UiS wishes to offer all its programs as planned, but courses still have to be subject to availability of resources and a minimum student enrollment. The course descriptions provide further information on - Class work and instruction - Set texts - Evaluation - Exams Learning outcome Candidates with a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering will have knowledge within materials science and mechanical engineering with emphasize on strength analysis, design and selection of materials. Likely job opportunities can be in construction and design of machines and equipment, materials testing and control, maintenance and consultancy. The work of a mechanical engineer is normally a varied one. To communicate and cooperate with individuals in other professions is an important part of the job. Completed program in engineering qualifies for admission to master programs in technology/civil engineering (120 ECTS) at UiS.
