Vic OE Evaluation Form PLEASE TYPE THIS EVALUATION FORM & IT TO VIC OE AS A WORD DOCUMENT A: Student Information VUW degree(s) LLB/BCom Major(s) Law, International Business Exchange Institution VUW Tri & Year of Exchange Australian National University (ANU), Canberra Tri 1+2, 2014 B: Finances Please detail your basic costs in New Zealand dollars. This will help future students plan their own budgets. (Enter your number rounded to the nearest dollar.) Books $600 Accommodation $9000 Return Airfare $600 Local Transportation $150 Meals $3500 Visa $ - Health & Insurance $700 Personal Spending Communications (phone, etc.) Other fees (specify) What unexpected costs did you encounter? What items were more or less than expected? $300 (toiletries etc.) $800 $2000 (travelling in breaks) $ How did your financial expenses compare to what you originally expected to spend? Roughly the same, though I probably needed to allow more money for travel expenses, because little things add up, especially when travelling with friends. Living costs in Australia (on-campus accommodation, food, transport etc.) is reasonably similar to NZ. By what means did you maintain your finances? What would you recommend? (Credit card, foreign bank account, travelers checks, etc)? As an ANU student, I was eligible for an Australian fee-free bank account and card. I used this mostly for my everyday spending, but I used my NZ debit card for bigger purchases etc. because the fee was smaller than transferring the money over to my Australian card. A credit card is also very handy to have with you I would keep it separate to your other cards/cash etc. wherever you travel. What financial advice would you give students attending the same university as you? Plan a budget as
you would in New Zealand, but budget about 20% more on each expense, so it covers you in Australia if anything is slightly more expensive. Also, having an Australian bank account proved essential for so many other admin things like student promos, proof of address etc. What was the average cost of a can of coke or coffee in your host country? Coke = $1.50ish. Coffee - $3.50ish. C: Visas & Insurance *Please note this information is recommended by VUW students & current at the time of their exchange. For all up-to-date visa information you must check with the embassy/consulate of your host university. Did you have to apply for a visa? If so, was it difficult? What was the process, how long did it take and how much did it cost? No. Do you have any advice for future students when applying for visas to your host country? N/a Did your host university have a mandatory insurance? Or a particular insurance they recommended? If Yes, what was it and how much did it cost? Yes, OHSC was the compulsory health insurance for ANU exchange students. I can t recall exactly how much it cost, but I believe it was between $600 and $800. What insurance company did you use and would you recommend it to future students? OHSC very helpful with doctors visits etc., simplified the whole process and made it affordable. Didn t need it for anything serious though, but definitely helpful to have. D: Academics at Host University Which courses did you take while on exchange? Please rate the difficulty of each course (1-5, 1 = Very Easy & 5 = Extremely Difficult) and leave any comments you may have. Course Title Language of VUW course VUW Rating (1-5) Comments Instruction equivalent or points/credits elective value VUW Trimester 1/YEAR LAWS 2245 ENG LAWS 300 LAWS 2271 ENG LAWS IT Law 15 4 Refugee Law BUSI 3020 ENG IBUS Int l Strategic Mgmt MGMT 3025 ENG IBUS Int l HR Management

What kind of help was available? Similar to NZ enrolling was very easy for exchange students simply ed faculty of what courses we would like to enroll in. Student advisors are also there, especially in Orientation Week, to help out. Appointments are readily available. How successful were you in registering/enrolling for classes you wanted? What advice would you offer to next year's exchange students about registration at your host university? Very successful just follow the process. Try to not change your mind too often, but they seem to be pretty accommodating when you do need to change something very exchange student friendly! Do you have any advice for future students when choosing and applying for courses? Get your approval for any courses you may do before you leave NZ getting approval at Vic via is much harder than in person. Academic Experience How did your academic experience differ from your time spend at Victoria? Did the academic experience meet your expectations? The workload at ANU was expectedly high, and I knew that it would be at the beginning of my exchange. I was surprised at how hands-on the learning was compared to Victoria. There was an enormous focus on research, and many of the assessments (particularly the highly-weighted ones) were research-intensive. How did the style of teaching at your host university compare with that at VUW? How did the workload
compare to what you would expect at VUW? The style of teaching was very similar lectures. One of the law courses I took was quite different though no classes, but instead we had voice recordings to listen to each week and tutorial-type classes were the main focus. The teaching style was very participative which I enjoyed. What would you recommend as an appropriate course load for other VUW students visiting your partner university? What specific courses would you recommend to visiting VUW students? Why? I think it s possible to maintain a 4-course semester as is the case at Victoria, but if you re wanting to obtain really high results, it might be better to drop down to 3. I stuck with four, and achieved grades a little lower than I expected, but ultimately I was happy that I enrolled in the 8 papers over the year. The Family Law course was great! The content was really practitioner-focused, so it put theories etc. into context very well. What advice would you give VUW students about succeeding academically at your host university? Do the readings, especially for law classes. Staying on top of readings and attending lectures are the two most crucial things you need to stay on top of to be able to do well. What was your impression of the computer facilities, library, and internet access at your host university? Excellent although there was no wi-fi allowed at the on-campus accommodation (only wired). There were four + libraries on campus, as well as cyber-labs and you never had to fight for computer time. There was also student support wherever you looked very easy to access and get help if required. If you went to a country where English is not the native language, how did you prepare for this? Were there any intensive language courses provided by the host university? n/a E: Accommodation What form of accommodation did you stay in? On-campus Hall of Residence What were the pros and cons of this form of accommodation? There were no cons for me it was the perfect choice for me, there were events all the time to get involved, the community spirit was like nothing I have ever experienced before, and I was able to meet some lifelong friends. What accommodation would you recommend to future students? Definitely on-campus in Canberra, there are different formats/layouts depending on your personality each of the Colleges has a completely different vibe, but its much harder to get involved if you re living off-campus. How early can you move into accommodation? 1 week before O Week and the start of classes. What options were available for meal plans or cooking facilities? How satisfied were you with the food? Our College was self-catered, with the largest kitchen in the Southern Hemisphere, and I absolutely loved it. I am gluten-free, so have a pretty particular diet, and this was great. We formed cooking groups sometimes
and would have family dinners regularly. There are, of course, catered halls to choose from as well as other self-catered halls, but I think my hall and particularly the kitchen, was a HUGE contributing factor to why I enjoyed my time at ANU so much. If you lived in off-campus housing, how easy was it to find? What should future VUW exchange students know about living off-campus? N/A Do you have any tips of advice for future students when applying for accommodation? Apply to Burton and Garran Hall it s the best! (But also do a bit of research online about the different halls, and how they might suit you) F: Personal & Cultural Connections What was it like making friends? How successful were you at making friends with local (i.e., not international) students? There s no doubt that my experience making friends was made easier by living on campus. My particular college was comprised of 50/50 exchange students and local students, so it was really an ideal mix for me. I ve definitely made some life-long friends at ANU, and I would definitely consider them more like family than friends I have numerous places to stay and explore whenever I travel Australia or the world in the future, and can t wait to show some of them NZ. What was it like to adjust to the culture of your exchange country/university? Reasonably easy I found Aussies to be much more upfront and brash, but not in a negative way. The balance between social/work life leans slightly more towards social than in NZ, which took a while to get used to, but I ended up loving. What, if any, cultural differences did you find particularly challenging? How would you recommend students to prepare for these differences? Honestly, none maybe just the noise levels. I would recommend getting into the habit of going to the library or finding a quiet space to study, it s very easy to become distracted. What parts of the culture did you most appreciate? The friendliness, constant support of people. Definitely the people I met throughout the year were the clear highlight. How were you treated by local people? By university staff and faculty? By students? Extremely friendly, hospitable and welcoming. Exchange students were treated so well and felt so supported by staff at ANU. As far as you could tell, how easy would it be for students with disabilities to study at your partner university? For students who are visible minorities in your host country? For students who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered? ANU was very similar to Victoria in this respect there are plenty of groups through the students association, as well as a disability support office that is easily accessible for students. Did you face any issues regarding discrimination in your host country? What were they, and what advice
would you give to future students? None but do be prepared for the usual Aussie/Kiwi rivalry, particularly with sports. G: Extra-curricular/Social Activities What organized activities (clubs, sports, etc.) were available to students? What extra-curricular activities would you recommend to future exchange students? A huge range of sports from rock-climbing and table tennis, to snow skiing and orienteering, there was SO much to choose from. I remember clubs week during O-Week and I came home with about 50 brochures not all for sports. Many were for community initiatives and giving back locally and nationally. I was heavily involved in the ANU netball club, which was amazing for meeting people, and was a member of the gym, which is really affordable for students. There is honestly something for everyone, but no doubt the most team spirit and feeling of unity comes from the momentous inter-hall events like Inward Bound (look it up!). There is even a hall for those living off campus if that happens to be you, so everyone can participate. What do you recommend other visiting students see or do on their weekends or holidays? Travel and explore there s so much to see and do. I went on a road-trip with friends on our holidays from Brisbane to Sydney. We swam every day, even though it was the middle of winter. Canberra has heaps to offer if you don t have much time to explore other parts of Australia so many museums and nice walks. Parliament, Questacon and the War Memorials are must-sees. Also the weekend café scene is bustling and always fun. What opportunities were there for students to work on-campus? Off-campus? Plenty of internships there s a specific program at ANU for exchange students to gain internships that count towards their degrees. Other than that, many of my friends upheld part-time jobs, usually in hospitality or retail because we lived so close (walking distance) to the biggest mall in Canberra and the CBD, and those sorts of jobs had pretty flexible hours to fit around study commitments. On-campus positions were limited, but available sometimes, though usually they were looking for permanent students, not exchanges. What volunteer or internship opportunities were there for students? Many with the public service and government departments, both paid and unpaid. Also plenty of opportunities to run/apply for positions in the ANU clubs, students associations etc. which were often really rewarding for those that did it! 5 things to take to your host country or region 1 Camera/phone 2 An open mind! 3 A home comfort for homesick days 4 Some token kiwi souvenirs 5 A bucket list for your trip/exchange experience
5 pieces of useful advice would tell a VUW student going to your host university 1 Try to squeeze in everything you can manage, while watching your finances! If there s a time to be busy, it s while you re on exchange, because it doesn t last long 2 Don t put too much pressure on yourself for everything to be perfect it ll fall into place with some organisation, but try to be adaptable to situations that are out of your control 3 Go to class. It s the simplest thing you can do to make sure you stay on top of school work. ANU records lectures too, so re-listen to them if you can. 4 Try to distract yourself if you re having a bad day don t be afraid to let someone know you re struggling, people might surprise you with their support 5 Use the support networks around you I found that ANU lecturers were extremely approachable and genuinely wanted you to succeed there was no such thing as a stupid question. Top 5 Things to do What are your Top 5 Things To Do future VUW students at your host university or city/country? 1 The Canberra Bucket List given to you at the exchange student orientation 2 Travel with friends I d recommend Sydney & Melbourne, as well as Great Ocean Rd and Queensland 3 Go to a different café every few weeks for brunch/coffee it helps you explore the Canberran atmosphere when it s at its best 4 Get up at 5am with your other hall friends and go cheer your fellow collegiates on at the annual IB event the best fun and such a great feeling when the runners finally reach end point. Highlight of the year! 5 Spend money I am so much poorer now than I was at the start of 2014, but I wouldn t change any of it. I had the best time of my life! Just make sure you have enough to covers bills etc. first! H: Personal Experience Please write one paragraph about your exchange experience. Plus, don t forget to submit some photos to the exchange office!! I don t even know where to start! This experience has been a whirlwind, and the year went by faster than any year has before. I absolutely loved ANU and everything it stood for, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to explore the world, while also having the safety net of not being too far away from home if need be. It was perfect for me given my family circumstances at the time, and Australia was much more different to New Zealand than I ever expected. I know it sounds clichéd, but I feel so privileged to have been able to represent Victoria University I made dear, lifelong friends, stepped way outside of my comfort zone only to discover new things about myself and others, and I will forever look back fondly on this experience. Thank you to Victoria for this opportunity I really cannot put into words how much this year has done for me, and I am so looking forward to returning to Victoria in 2015 and encouraging others to take part in the Vic OE exchange program.
