1 MARKETPLACE SAVE 20% ON PEER COACHING NOW! USE PROMO CODE Z169 AT SHOP.ASCD.ORG Offer expires June 30, 2015 ASCD Author Pam Robbins on the Flexibility of Peer Coaching Peer coaching activities can be chosen to reflect the needs, aspirations, and trust levels of the individuals who will be engaged in them. According to author Pam Robbins, coaching activities fall into two categories: collaborative work and formal coaching. Collaborative work engages teachers in using structures that build trust and increase their capacity to promote learning. These activities may include dialogue about a specific student, study and practice using a lesson strategy, problem solving, or exploring a conceptual understanding. Collaborative work is usually not tied to a classroom observation, whereas formal coaching does include classroom observation. In settings where trust exists, peer coaches move seamlessly between collaborative work and formal coaching, depending on need and focus. According to Jayme Thompson at Sewickley Academy, peer coaching "helps us to become more self-aware and conscious of how we teach and how it affects our students' learning. It provides an awareness that aids our planning and preparation. Instead of looking for judgment [i.e. good job!] we look at the outcomes and what behavior/learning/ teaching led to those outcomes." Examining Collaborative Work and Peer Coaching Roles Peer coaching can encompass many structures, roles, and activities. Collaborative work often serves to build readiness for formal coaching roles, though individuals engaged in formal coaching roles may also participate in collaborative work. LOOK INSIDE!
