1 LEC LASALLIAN EDUCATION COUNCIL CELESTINO FERNÁNDEZ Distinguished Professor of Sociology University of Arizona Tucson, AZ CELESTINO has served as Professor of Sociology at the University of Arizona since 1976, where he also has held several administrative positions, including as the University s first Vice President for Undergraduate Education and as the founding Executive Vice President and Provost of Arizona International College. Celestino has published approximately 50 articles and book chapters on topics ranging from education to culture, as well as Mexican immigration. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the University of Phoenix and La Frontera Arizona, Inc. (the largest behavioral health agency in Arizona), along with serving on a number of local, state, and national committees and task forces. Celestino helped start San Miguel High School in Tucson, AZ. His many accolades include being honored by the American Association for Higher Education for his Distinguished Leadership in Higher Education and by the Governor of Arizona for his commitment to quality and excellence. BROTHER FLORENT GAUDREAULT, FSC Assistant to the General Councilor Lasallian Region of North America Washington, DC BROTHER FLORENT, from the District of Francophone Canada, began serving in 2012 as Assistant to the General Councilor for RELAN. He also serves as the liaison between the English-speaking Districts of the Region and the District of Francophone Canada and its Visitor, and provides translation services as needed for Christian Brothers Conference. He serves as his District s ex-officio representative to the LEC. Previously, Brother Florent was Director of Residence De La Salle, the Brothers retirement residence in Laval, Québec. For the 17 years prior, he served as an Assistant Principal, a teacher of French and of English as a second language, and a Principal in a Lasallian school in Québec. He also has been a member of the District Council in Francophone Canada for many years, and a member of the De La Salle College Oaklands Board of Trustees in Toronto. 1

2 CHARLES SKIP GAUS, JR., AFSC (secretary) Director De La Salle Vocational Bensalem, PA SKIP served as Director of De La Salle in Towne in Philadelphia, PA, since 1989, and took on his current role as Director of De La Salle Vocational in Bensalem, PA, upon the closing of De La Salle in Towne in The center is a component of St. Gabriel s System, a service of the Juvenile Justice Division of Catholic Social Services. He has worked in the field of youth services for more than 30 years. He has previously served with the Department of Youth Activities of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, Discovery Leadership Institute, and Colorado Outward Bound. Skip has also served as a member of the Criminal Justice and Community Health Services Advisory Board of Community College of Philadelphia, chaired the Philadelphia Family Court Day Treatment Providers Association, served on the Board of the Mid-Atlantic Association of Youth Services, and was instrumental in the founding of the East Coast Lasallian Child Care Association. Skip was a lay consultant to the 43rd General Chapter and served on the International Commission for Lasallian Education in Rome. SISTER DORIS GOTTEMOELLER, RSM President Mercy Education Collaborative of Cincinnati Cincinnati, OH SISTER DORIS is the President of the Mercy Education Collaborative of Cincinnati, overseeing two high schools sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy. Previously, she served as Senior Vice President for Mission Integration at Catholic Health Partners from She has served in congregational leadership and on numerous health care, higher education, high school, seminary, and social service boards. She was the first President of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, the Provincial of the Sisters of Mercy of the Cincinnati Province, the President of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, a delegate to the International Union of Superiors General, and an auditor at the Synod on Consecrated Life. She is a member of the advisory committee for the Catholic Common Ground Initiative, founded by the late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin. Other ministry experience includes writing and lecturing throughout the United States and abroad on topics of ministry, ecclesiology, and religious life. WILLIAM HUDSON Head of School Mounds Park Academy Saint Paul, MN BILL serves as Head of School at Mounds Park Academy in Saint Paul, MN. Previously, he was Director of Institutional Advancement at Mounds Park Academy, after serving at Totino-Grace High School in Fridley, MN, as Vice President for Mission and then as President. Prior to these roles, Bill served as the Associate Executive Director of the Secondary Schools Department of the National Catholic Educational Association in Washington, DC. He has been a teacher, campus minister, coach, club moderator, Dean of Students, and Assistant Principal. Bill was also LEC Vice Chair from Bill has presented across the country at conferences, dioceses, and schools. He s written for Momentum and several other NCEA publications, Today s Catholic Teacher, The Catholic Educational Journal, and Saint Mary s Press. He was also a delegate to the 2013 International Mission Assembly. 2

3 SCOTT KIER Superintendent of Lasallian Education Midwest District Burr Ridge, IL SCOTT joined the Midwest District in June 2013 as Superintendent of Lasallian Education, a new position in the District. It is similar to the former Director of Education role, but includes other responsibilities such as visiting ministries, strengthening District communication, and helping to advance the District Strategic Plan. Prior to taking on this new leadership role in the Midwest District, Scott served as Dean of Students at Saint Mary s College of California and completed his doctorate in Educational Leadership at the University of San Francisco. He has more than two decades of experience serving in Lasallian ministries, including as Chief Financial Officer at St. Joseph s Collegiate High School in Buffalo, NY, and Vice Principal at De La Salle Collegiate in Warren, MI. Scott has participated in the Lasallian Leadership Institute and Buttimer Institute of Lasallian Studies. CHARLES LEGENDRE, AFSC (chair) Director, Office of Education Covington District of San Francisco New Orleans Covington, LA CHARLIE serves as Director, Office of Education Covington, for the District of San Francisco New Orleans, which was inaugurated July 1, He joined the District of New Orleans-Santa Fe leadership team in 2011 as the Director of Lasallian Mission. Prior to joining that District team, Charlie served for 30 years at St. Paul s School in Covington, LA, where his duties included Religion Department Chair, head track coach, campus minister, liturgist, and music ministry. Charlie is a graduate of Christian Brothers School and De La Salle High School, both in New Orleans, LA. In addition to serving on the LEC, Charlie s other Lasallian leadership experiences and contributions over the years have included the Buttimer Institute of Lasallian Studies, Lasallian Leadership Institute, NO-SF Mission and Ministry Council, trustee of the Louisiana Lasallian Education Corporation, CIL 2010, Regional Education Board, Regional Mission Assemblies, International Mission Assembly 2013, and the Huether Lasallian Conference 2013 Planning Committee. SISTER JEANNE McGOWAN, SSJ President La Salle Academy Philadelphia, PA SISTER JEANNE has served as President of La Salle Academy in Philadelphia, a San Miguel school, since Since entering religious life in 1975, she has had the opportunity to serve in the inner city schools of Baltimore, Newark, and Philadelphia. Her focus and attention has been on elementary education. She has taught grades first through eighth and was Principal of Our Mother of Sorrows Elementary School in Philadelphia, PA, for 14 years. She also has served as President of the Principals Association for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Sister Jeanne previously served as a member of the Regional Education Board. She also attended the RELAN Women s Symposium in

4 BROTHER FREDERICK C. MUELLER, FSC Coordinator of Faculty/Staff Professional Development and Lasallian Formation La Salle Academy Providence, RI BROTHER FREDERICK serves as the Coordinator of Faculty/Staff Professional Development and Lasallian Formation at La Salle Academy in Providence, RI. He has served previously in a wide variety of positions, including teacher, Principal at both La Salle Academy in Providence and La Salle Center in Oakdale, NY, and Assistant Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Providence. He was Director of Education and Auxiliary Visitor for Long Island-New England District, served as Secretary for the Lasallian Educational Mission (MEL) in Rome, and was a delegate to the 2013 International Mission Assembly. Brother Frederick has served on many boards and commissions within the Lasallian world and has held service and leadership positions on several state educational and regional accrediting agencies. He has published and presented widely throughout the United States and Europe. In 2011, he was honored with the Brother John Johnston, FSC Award, the highest Regional honor. KURT SCHACKMUTH Vice President for Mission and Academic Services Lewis University Romeoville, IL KURT serves as Vice President for Mission & Academic Services at Lewis University in Romeoville, IL, and has been a part of the Lewis University staff since He is responsible for the University s efforts to promote and advance its Catholic and Lasallian mission through mission-based hiring, orientation, and formation programs as well as through other initiatives, policies, and activities. He oversees the Division of Mission & Ministry, which includes the Office of Mission and Identity, University Ministry, and the Center for Ministry and Spirituality. Kurt also has responsibility for the University s academic support services/programs and manages a portfolio of academic projects and initiatives for the Provost s Office. Kurt is a graduate of the Buttimer Institute of Lasallian Studies and has also participated in the Institute for Administrators in Catholic Higher Education; the Association of Catholic College and Universities (ACCU) Collegium program; and he recently completed the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) Senior Leadership Academy. He received the Midwest District s Distinguished Lasallian Educator Award in November GERY SHORT Director, Office of Education Mont La Salle District of San Francisco New Orleans Napa, CA GERY serves as Director, Office of Education Mont La Salle, for the District of San Francisco New Orleans, which was inaugurated July 1, Previously he served as the Director of the Office of Education for the District of San Francisco with his primary responsibilities including overseeing the District s leadership formation programs, assuring the authenticity of the mission in District works, and the development and stabilizing of schools recently established to serve the poor. Gery s contributions at the Regional level include serving on the task force that designed the Lasallian Leadership Institute, participating on the task force that created the new Regional structure aimed to be more inclusive of Partners, and serving as Chair of the Regional Education Board from Gery was also LEC Vice Chair from prior to serving as LEC Chair from Internationally, Gery served as a member of the International Commission on Association from and the Preparatory Committee for the 2006 International Mission Assembly. He was Chair of the 2006 International Mission Assembly. Gery also attended the 1993 and 2000 General Chapters as a lay consultant. 4

5 LORAS RED SIEVE, AFSC (vice chair) Consultant to the District Council Midwest District Edina, MN RED has served on the Midwest District Council as a consultant since He has also served and continues to serve various Lasallian ministries in the District. They include Saint Mary s University of Minnesota where he has served on the Alumni Board from , Board of Trustees from , Trustee Emeriti from 2007-present, University Vice President for Corporate and Community Relations from , Graduate School s Council of Regents from 2007-present, and the First Generation Initiative Advisory Board from 2009-present. Red has also served on the Boards of Directors of the Saint Mary s Press and the former San Miguel School of Minneapolis. Red s business career spanned 32 years in various management positions with General Mills Inc. retiring in 1995 as the Director of Planning - Package Foods Operations Division. He served in the United States Air Force and Air Guard/Reserves from Red remains active in his parish and local community by serving on various committees and task forces. CAROLE SWAIN Vice President for Mission, Professor of Education Saint Mary s College of California Moraga, CA CAROLE serves as Vice President for Mission and Faculty Development Associate at Saint Mary s College of California in Moraga. She has served in a number of positions at Saint Mary s, including Dean for Mission and Faculty Development, Special Assistant to the President for Lasallian Initiatives, and Director of Elementary Education. Deeply engaged in the Saint Mary s community, she chaired the Academic Senate, created academic programs, and served on various faculty governance committees. Before coming to Saint Mary s, she was the Director of the Academic Talent Development Program and lecturer/supervisor in the School Psychology Program at the University of California, Berkeley. Carole chaired the Regional Task Force for creating new structures for voice and vote of Brothers and lay Partners, participated in the CIL program, and was a delegate to the District, Regional, and International Assemblies. Additionally, she served on the District of San Francisco Mission Council, presented at the Buttimer Institute of Lasallian Studies, and chaired boards of two Lasallian schools. ALAN WEYLAND Executive Director for Mission and Ministry District of Eastern North America Eatontown, NJ ALAN serves as Executive Director for Mission and Ministry in the District of Eastern North America, which he began when the District was created in He previously served at Bishop Kelley High School in Tulsa, OK, for 32 years. During that time, he held various roles including teacher, Academic Principal, Principal, and the first lay President of the school. Alan is a graduate of the Lasallian Leadership Institute and the Buttimer Institute of Lasallian Studies and has attended numerous Huether and Lasallian Association of Secondary School Chief Administrators conferences. He has served the Midwest and Eastern North America Districts on various committees and the Region as a member of the Regional Education Board. He was also LEC Secretary from Alan participated in the 2005 Regional Assembly, the 2013 International Mission Assembly, and the 2014 CIL program on animating Lasallian communities. 5

6 MARGARET McCARTY Executive Director Christian Brothers Conference Washington, DC MAGGIE took on the role of Executive Director for the Region in Prior to joining the Lasallian mission, Maggie served the church in a number of ministry, education, and administrative roles for 34 years. Her positions included being President of Education for Parish Service, an administrator of a Level 5 High School (residential treatment center) for adolescent girls near Baltimore, an administrator at Loyola College, and an adjunct faculty member at several Catholic colleges and universities. She is a published author, speaker, and retreat director, and she has worked at the parish, diocesan, and national levels in Catholic youth ministry. She also has worked with programs owned/affiliated with three other religious orders. She currently serves as a volunteer and catechist in her home parish. Maggie was a delegate to the 2013 International Mission Assembly. She is also a graduate of the Buttimer Institute of Lasallian Studies and a member of the Lasallian Educational Mission (MEL) International Council. 6
