4 PREFACE 1 The HIV/AIDS epidemic is now in its third decade and we are seeing undeniable evidence of its impacts around the world. Despite considerable progress made in the effort to combat HIV/AIDS, enormous challenges must still be tackled. This holds true especially with regard to prevention, intervention and support for the Aboriginal population which, for various reasons, constitutes an at-risk population. The Regroupement des centres d'amitié autochtones du Québec has played an important role in helping to improve access to resources for urban Aboriginal people by publishing its Directory of HIV/AIDS Intervention, Detection and Support Organizations. The work to produce this directory ties in closely with our mission, which is to promote the rights and interests of Aboriginal people in the urban setting, and to support the Native Friendship Centres in their work to improve the quality of life of Aboriginal people, promote culture and foster mutual understanding between peoples. We hope that the directory will ensure better access for Aboriginal people to the existing resources, in particular, those which are culturally-adapted. 1 The views expressed here do not necessarily reflect the official position of the Public Health Agency of Canada. 1

5 DIRECTORY OF HIV/AIDS INTERVENTION, DETECTION AND SUPPORT ORGANIZATIONS ABOUT THIS DIRECTORY We are pleased to provide you with this directory of Quebec organizations working in HIV/AIDS intervention, detection and support. It is a reference tool intended primarily to help people who are affected in any way by HIV/AIDS find the most direct and effective resources for meeting their needs. The directory is designed for easy use. It presents the Native Friendship Centre Movement of Quebec, including the eight (8) Native friendship centres in Quebec whose mission is to improve the quality of live of Urban Aboriginal people. It contains a section for each of the administrative regions in Quebec. Under the title Non-profit organizations for each region, you will find a list of all organizations that provide referral, prevention, support and accommodations services to people affected by HIV/AIDS. A brief description is given of the services offered by each organization to help you determine whether its specific resources will be useful to you. With regard to HIV/AIDS screening, there is a sub-section entitled Anonymous screening services for each region. Due to the high mobility of Aboriginal people, we also felt it would be useful to include nationwide organizations working in HIV/AIDS. These organizations are grouped according to province and the ones that work primarily with Aboriginal people are indicated by a turtle symbol.
