3 Advisory Committee for the Doctor of Business Administration Degree Program Program Objectives: The Doctor of Business Administration degree program (DBA) emphasizes both mastery of subject matter as well as an understanding of related research and research methodology for professional-oriented projects/theses. The program aims to develop the student s ability to integrate and apply original and practical research into the subject matter. The program is designed for the student to accomplish specified goals and objectives and contribute to competence in the subject area or profession at an advanced level. The purpose of the Doctoral Advisory Committee: The Doctor of Business Administration degree program is governed by its Doctoral Advisory Committee (DAC). The committee is responsible for developing, modifying, and maintaining the doctorate degree program. Committee members include qualified NPU faculty and administrators as well as other qualified professionals or practitioners not affiliated with NPU. The committee is knowledgeable in methods of research and in the subject matter, chaired by credentialed individuals with expertise in the program area. While pursuing their studies in the doctorate program, the students receive guidance from and work with their respective Doctoral Advisory Committee as well as advisors appointed by the committee. Committee Organization: Doctoral Advisory Committee Committee Chair and Members Program Administrator (10 or more NPU faculty members and with supporting staff 3-5 outside members in related field) Responsible for the program s academic affairs. Responsible for program s administrative affairs and logistic support. Program Administration: Administration of the DBA program is the responsibility of a qualified individual with appropriate administrative and educational background and experience related to a doctorate degree program. The qualifications include a doctoral/terminal professional degree in a related subject area. The duties of this individual should be full-time with adequate staff 2

4 support. The program requires students to work with a well-qualified and credentialed committee knowledgeable in methods of research and in the subject matter, chaired by an appropriately credentialed individual with expertise in the program area. See APPENDIX A for information on current program administrator and supporting staff. The program administrator is responsible for the implementation of the program policy, rules, and regulations set forth by the Committee. The program administrator is also responsible for maintaining the required documents, such as that required for each student folder and faculty folder, committee meeting minutes, handbooks, etc. The program administrator ensures that the DAC members timely conduct their activities and maintain program quality and integrity, and that each doctoral student receives proper guidance and advice throughout his/her study in the doctorate degree program. The program administrator is supported by qualified administrative staff. What are the responsibilities of the Committee and who are the members? The DBA Advisory Committee members consist of a number of NPU business faculty members and outside unaffiliated members. See APPENDIX B for the list of current members. See APPENDIX C for an overview of the responsibilities involved. The responsibilities of the Committee are: a) Maintain and update the doctorate degree program to ensure that the program is consistent with the institution s mission and objectives and meets the ACICS criteria, thus to ensure the quality and integrity of the program. b) Offers guidance and direction for the program curriculum to ensure that the curriculum keeps pace with the changing global and local economies and business trends and meets the workforce demand in this field. c) Committee members must be knowledgeable in methods of research and each member is knowledgeable in his/her field of the subject matter. Members must observe the program mission and objectives to advise the doctoral students. d) Monitor admission of applicants to the program and a designated team of committee members, including the Program Administrator, must take the responsibility of reviewing each application and approve the admission evaluation for qualified applicants. e) Participate in Committee meetings and provide members expert opinions and suggestions as needed. f) Members are requested to serve on subcommittees or ad hoc subcommittees to facilitate the program administration duties. A subcommittee is assembled to conduct progress review and make assessment of each doctoral student upon the student s submission of his/her Statement of Purpose and giving the presentation. The team members review the student s academic records and his/her Statement of Purpose report, attend the student s presentation forum, and interview the student regarding his/her purpose of study and research interest. The team members then make a recommendation for the student to either proceed with the study or to terminate his/her study in the program. See APPENDIX D for the Readiness Evaluation form. 3

5 g) The Committee is responsible for advising the doctoral students for their studies in the program. h) The DAC is to assist the doctoral student to form a Dissertation Committee (DC) when he/she is ready to start his/her doctoral dissertation research work. Each Doctoral Dissertation Committee is composed of qualified NPU faculty members as well as outside members; it must elect a committee chair who is a member of NPU. The doctoral student, for whom the DC is formed, may request the DC to recommend a dissertation advisor for him/her. i) The DAC is to ensure that the appointed DC carries out its duties to monitor its student-advisor team throughout the student s doctoral dissertation work. The DC is responsible for attending the student s proposal presentation and provides inputs and suggestions to the student-advisor team until the proposal s approval; it is also responsible for attending the student s dissertation defense, reviewing the student s dissertation, providing inputs and suggestions until the final approval of the dissertation. j) The DAC Chair is responsible for calling each Committee meeting with a prepared agenda, and to ensure that the meeting minutes is written and filed. What form of educational delivery is utilized (e.g., residential, non-traditional, or other (if other, please explain))? The residential form of educational delivery is utilized in this program. What are the entrance requirements or methods used to determine whether prospective students can meet program requirements? The entrance requirements cover three areas: academic background, evidence of independent R&D capability or interest in R&D area covered by the offered program, and English proficiency as specified below: a) Academic background: An applicant must have earned a bachelor s or master s degree in a business related field. The minimum grade point average from each previous degree earned is 3.0. Students with strong interest in pursuing this degree but whose previous GPA is below 3.0 and above 2.5 may be provisionally admitted. These students will be required to maintain satisfactory progress in the first academic year to be allowed to proceed in the program. b) Strong interest in advanced study in the chosen subject area. c) English proficiency: To enroll in degree courses, an applicant must demonstrate English proficiency by providing documents satisfying at least one of the following: (i) graduation from an institution where English was an official language or having completed a college-level English course at such an institution, or (ii) meeting NPU s minimum TOEFL requirement a score of 550 on the paper-based test, or 213 on the computer-based test, or 79 on an Internet test, or (iii) having completed advanced level English As A Second Language courses (ESL) at NPU or at other English institutions recognized by NPU, or (iv) passing NPU s English Placement Examination (EPE), conducted prior to the students first trimester at NPU. 4

6 Students who meet the English proficiency requirement specified in the above (ii), (iii), or (iv), are required to also complete a college English course at NPU early in their studies in the program. Is GMAT required? Each DBA student is required to take either GMAT or an on-campus equivalent test before joining the DBA program. The score does not affect the student s admission. These scores are collected for future analysis purpose. How is an applicant evaluated? Each applicant is required to submit his/her official transcripts for his/her previous studies from bachelor s degree and up - in addition to other required documents. The admission evaluation for each applicant is based on the applicant s transcripts received by the NPU admissions office before the evaluation is made. NPU has a web-based management system which provides the program template in accordance with the program descriptions in the school s catalog each year. The admission evaluators use the template to conduct admission evaluation for each applicant. For each doctoral applicant, his/her background preparation (required undergraduate subjects), English requirement, and transferable graduate credit - if applicable are marked on his/her evaluation form. Each evaluation must be reviewed by a designated DAC member. Statement of Purpose Assess the student s readiness When a doctoral student has successfully completed 30 units of his/her graduation requirements for the doctorate degree program as well as the Research Methodology course, the student has reached a checkpoint where the responsible administrative staff will notify the DAC to designate a team of a minimum of three members to make an assessment of the student and determine whether to promote or deny the student for a continued study in the doctoral program. The student will be notified to submit a Statement of Purpose (SOP; see below for contents) to the team members. The responsible staff also provides the student s academic records to the team members for reference. At the same time, the staff will arrange a meeting for the student to present his/her statements to the team. Although the Statement of Purpose presentation is conducted in an open forum format, only the designated team members have the voting power. The team members responsibility is to make an assessment of the student s academic performance, and readiness for advanced study in the field as well as maturity to conduct doctoral research work in the program. They have the liberty to question the presenter in order to make their decisions. Unanimous votes are required to pass the student. The Doctoral Student handbook has the following instructions in the section of SOP for the students: By this time, you must have learned the general format of APA research papers and write all the required papers/reports in this format. The current APA format published is in its 5 th edition (12/2008). 5

7 The student should prepare powerpoint presentation materials when giving his/her presentation. The materials must have been edited by a qualified editor before the student s presentation. All the reports from PART A and PART B below must be edited by a qualified editor and submitted to the your Program Administrator/assistant for filing. Electronic copies must be provided to the Program Administrator/assistant prior to your SOP presentation in order for them to be distributed to the attendees to your presentation. The handbook then provides the follow requirements for the students to prepare their Statement of Purpose reports and presentations (please refer to the Doctoral Student Handbook for details): PART A general (counted 30%): 1. State why you wish to pursue the doctorate degree of study. 2. State what preparation you have made to pursue the study. 3. State what you consider as the required background for pursuing the study and why you think you have the proper background. 4. State why you think that you will be able to integrate and apply practical research into the subject matter. 5. Learning objective: State your ultimate goal for pursuing the study as well as your future plan. PART B Research interest area and readiness (counted 70%): 1. The student must have chosen an area of research interest: You must have worked with at least one DBA Advisory Committee member (NPU business faculty with terminal degrees) to define your area of research interest and make a statement in your SOP (20%). 2. You must have conducted preliminary research in your interest area by reading at least five published papers and/or books. The papers must be chosen from qualified dissertations, journal articles, case studies, or books. For each paper/book read, you are required to write a summary report (minimum one page long) and state how it will help you in your research work. Each report must be edited by a qualified editor and approved by either your Program Administrator or another Advisory Committee member. (20%) 3. You are required to submit a draft of the first two chapters of your dissertation. It should include information on literature review, problem statement, and research questions. It must be edited by a qualified editor and approved by either your Program Administrator or another Advisory Committee member. (20%) 4. You will be evaluated on your observance of the APA format for all the reports you have submitted. (10%) 6

8 Course Advising: Each doctoral student is advised to take the required courses following the proper sequence. As the DBA program provides a certain number of elective course units for the student to take courses of his/her interest, the DAC needs to designate members to provide academic advice to the students for their course selections. It is also likely that some students want to take courses towards their research areas in preparation for their doctoral dissertation research. In this case, the DAC will select academic advisors for the students according to their expertise areas. APPENDIX E is a study flow for the doctoral students. Cultivate student s research capability: Since a doctoral student is not allowed to enroll in the doctoral dissertation courses until he/she has completed at least 80 units of the coursework, the student must learn research methodology and gain research experience before registering in the Dissertation courses. Research Methodology is one of the required courses in the DBA program. So the student will take the course prior to enrolling in the doctoral research courses. To cultivate the student s research capability, each doctoral student is urged to conduct at least one research project every semester while taking the required courses. Many NPU faculty members have been very supportive of this request by the DAC by enforcing the practice as a requirement and make their doctoral students turn in their research reports at the end of the semester. The DAC has collected a number of such research reports. Doctoral Dissertation Advising: The Dissertation course series are two 6-unit dissertation courses as part I and II of the dissertation work. Due to the DBA curricular requirements, which include a significant number of subject courses, the doctoral student begins to enroll in Dissertation- part I in the last phase of his/her study in the program. In order to be able to complete the doctoral dissertation work as well as the dissertation in two semesters or a reasonable period of time, the student must begin his/her preparation of the research work much earlier. This also means that the student may need to seek a dissertation advisor early. The Program Administrator works with the members in the Doctor Advisory Committee (DAC) to assist each doctoral student in this effort. The student s research advisor can be selected by the student or as a result of the combined effort of the Program Administrator and the DAC. The dissertation advisor must be an NPU member. If any student wishes to invite an outside member to be his/her dissertation advisor, then an NPU faculty member must be chosen to team up with this outside member to coadvise the student on his/her dissertation work. Outside members can only serve as coadvisors for the doctoral students in their research and dissertation efforts. To ensure that the student is ready for the dissertation courses, the student is required to meet the following requirements before being allowed to enroll in the first course of the 7

9 Dissertation series: The student has conducted preliminary research on his/her research interest and kept record of his/her research reference sources, has found a dissertation advisor, has formed the student s Dissertation Committee (DC) and received the DAC s approval of the DC, has prepared the dissertation proposal following the required format, has followed the requirements to give his/her presentation on the proposal to the DC and other invited audience and has received the DC s approval of his/her proposal and presentation. In each major step of the process, a form must be signed by the involved evaluation members and turned in to the administrative staff in charge of keeping such records. Dissertation Committee (DC): By the time the student enrolls in the doctoral dissertation course- part I, a Dissertation Committee (DC) must have been formed for the student. The DC is composed of at least 3 members with at least one as an outside member who is unaffiliated with NPU. A DC Chair must be chosen and who must be an NPU member. If the outside member(s) in a DC is/are found by the doctoral student, the student is responsible for such outside members travel expenses for fulfilling the members duties for the student. The DC members are responsible for evaluating the student s proposal and presentation to make a recommendation for approval or modification of the proposal. The student must obtain his/her DC s approval of his/her proposal before spending his/her major effort in the doctoral research work. When the student completes his/her dissertation, the DC members are also responsible for attending the student s dissertation defense and evaluating the student s dissertation to approve or deny it. The doctoral dissertation advisor provides guidance to the doctoral student from dissertation proposal preparation to dissertation defense and dissertation approval by the DC. The advisor should keep close contact with the student s DC members during the entire process. Upon completing the dissertation, the doctoral student must first obtain his/her dissertation advisor s approval of the dissertation. The dissertation is then submitted to the DC for approval while the dissertation advisor assists the doctoral student to arrange for a dissertation defense meeting with the DC members. The Program Administrator is on hand to provide any assistance needed. The student must obtain the DC s approval of his/her dissertation and pass the dissertation defense in order to complete his/her Dissertation courses. Fees paid to the dissertation advisor and the DC members: For the semesters when the doctoral student is enrolled in the Dissertation courses, the dissertation advisor is paid an advisor fee of $1,000 per semester. The fee is normally distributed at the end of each semester. For each DC member - other than the dissertation advisor, NPU pays two fees to the member as a token of appreciation for his/her assistance in the student s dissertation work: (1) a fee of $250 for evaluating the student s dissertation proposal and presentation (2) a fee of $350 for evaluating the student s dissertation and defense. APPENDIX F provides the necessary forms used related to this event. 8

13 APPENDIX D Northwestern Polytechnic University Readiness Evaluation and Study Plan (DBA Program) Part I is to be completed by the designated DAC review team members; Part II is to be completed by the designated academic advisor and the DBA Advisory Committee. Policy: When a DBA student has completed 30 units of the graduation requirements for the program as well as the Research Methodology course, the DBA Advisory Committee will make an evaluation of the student to determine the student s readiness for research and pursuing the DBA degree. A DAC team, composed of at least three members, makes an evaluation for the student. They will examine two criteria: (1) the student s academic performance and (2) his/her Statement of Purpose. The student must give an oral presentation on his/her Statement of Purpose and submit required reports (details described in both the student handbook and the Advisory Committee member handbook). The Statement of Purpose should include at least the student s learning objective and practical research plan, and show the student s ability to integrate and apply practical research into the subject matter. Students unable to make satisfactory academic progress or statement of purpose will be advised to pursue a master s degree instead. When the review team approves a student to continue his/her study in the DBA program after the assessment, an academic advisor may be appointed to guide the student for his/her further academic study. This advisor may or may not be the student s dissertation advisor. Name of the course advisor: Effective date: While taking the required courses, the student will also be learning related research projects and research methodology; the learning leads to developing the student s ability to integrate and apply original and practical research into the subject matter which is designed for the student to accomplish specified goal and objectives and contribute to competence in the subject area or profession at an advanced level. Elective courses recommended by the advisor or the DBA Advisory Committee: Upon completing at least 80 units of course work, the doctoral candidate must inform the DBA Advisory Committee that he/she is ready for his/her doctoral dissertation work by submitting the Begin Doctoral Dissertation form to the NPU Records Office. The student is encouraged to find a dissertation advisor him/herself; the student may also request the DBA Advisory Committee to appoint a dissertation advisor for him/her. The DBA Advisory Committee and/or the dissertation advisor will assist the student to form a Doctoral Dissertation Committee (DC) to assist the student in his/her doctoral dissertation work. 13

15 APPENDIX E Doctoral Study Flowchart Basic Admission Requirements: (1) At least one previous degree in related field, (2) A minimum of a bachelor s degree is required, (3) Previous CUM GPA is at least 3.0, (4) English proficiency at College English level, (5) Having taken GMAT or equivalent. test, Credit Transfer: (1) All graduate credits earned at NPU count, but not all may be transferable, (2) A maximum of 20 semester units are transferable from other approved institutions. Background Evaluation: Each doctoral degree program requires certain background preparation, i.e., undergraduate subjects. Acceptance: Each admission requires the Doctoral Advisory Committee s (DAC) approval. Length of Study: The length of study must be for a minimum of 3 years and a maximum of 7 years. Doctoral Dissertation: (1) The student may not enroll in the dissertation courses until he/she has completed at least 80 units of the program s course requirements, (2) Before the student starts to enroll in Dissertation-I, the student must follow the instructions in the Doctoral Student Handbook to conduct preliminary research and submit his/her dissertation proposal and given his/her presentation to the Dissertation Committee (DC), (3) A Dissertation Advisor and a Dissertation Committee are required for each student starting to enroll in the Dissertation- part I course. The DAC and/or the dissertation advisor assists the student to form a DC. (4) The DC evaluates and makes determination of the student s dissertation proposal and presentation, the dissertation defense, and the final dissertation. 14 Readiness Check: (1) Upon completing 30 graduate units or 1 year s study (whichever comes first) as well as the Research Methodology course, the student must submit a Statement of Purpose and other required reports and give an oral presentation to a designated group of the Doctoral Advisory Committee members. (2) A student unable to make a clear and meaningful statement or meet other requirements will be advised to pursue a master s degree instead. (3) A student who can not maintain satisfactory progress (GPA 3.0) will not be allowed to pursue a master s or doctoral degree. Academic advising: Students who have passed the readiness check may seek academic advice from DAC members for taking advanced elective courses.

17 Recommendation on Doctoral Research Proposal This form is completed by the Dissertation Committee (DC) designated for the presenter (doctoral student) after the DC members have read the doctoral student s research proposal and attended the student s presentation. The committee members offer their recommendations below to provide guidance and assist the presenter to gauge his/her research work. The completed form should be submitted to the Program Administrator soon after the presentation is made.
