2 Wolverine Green & Gold Development Standards 2012 Development Year Introduction In an effort to increase the robustness and interaction of UVU s online course offerings, Distance Education has established minimun standards of development quality for which it will issue both endorsement and compensation. These minimum standards are designated as Wolverine Green and Wolverine Gold, but there is no quality difference between Green and Gold designations. Gold ratings are reserved for large enrollment courses or bottleneck courses as determined by the Office of Academic Affairs. In order to garner a Wolverine Green/Gold designation, a course must contain the following elements: Part A: These materials are provided by (IDS). These materials include: UVU - Policies and Services: Academic integrity policy Disability policy Student support information Student rights and responsibilities statement Parking information UVU student success links Distance Education disclaimer Netiquette statement Getting Started Presidential Welcome Getting Started in this Course Canvas Tutorials Succeeding Online Evaluation: Formative course evaluation Version 1 Page 1 of 4

3 Part B: These materials will be co-created between an instructional designer and a faculty member. These materials include: Instructor Information Instructor Welcome Educational background Contact information, availability, policies, and procedures Virtual & real office hours Student responsibilities Instructor responsibilities Course Information Course Orientation: Course overview (taken from COMET) o Course description o Course goals and objectives o Program requirements and prerequisites (instructors may add skills and equipment needed to successfully participate) A How this Course Works statement (methods & modus operandi) Required course texts, readings, resources Communication policies Submission policies Grading policies Proctoring information (if applicable) Descriptions of major assignments and assessment strategies Table of assignments with points and/or percentages Part C: These materials will be created by a faculty member based on guidelines provided by IDS. These materials include: Learning Units As subject matter experts for their courses, faculty have autonomy in the selection and creation of content for each learning unit. Wolverine Green & Gold courses must include the following elements in each learning unit. There must be a minimum of 12 weeks or learning units for a 16 week semester. Each learning unit must include: Learning Objective(s) that are Aligned with Course Objectives and Learning Outcomes Lesson Overview List of Lesson Activities Version 1 Page 2 of 4

4 o 3 Topic Exploration Strategies* o 2 Engagement Strategies o 1 Application/Assessment Strategy Instructor Narrative (optional) Exploration *exploration strategies are scaled to number of course credits: 2 credit courses require 2 exploration strategies 3 credit courses require 3 exploration strategies 4 or more credit courses require extra strategies, but faculty may choose which extra strategies to utilize This element includes all modes of content delivery (faculty to student). There must be three unique exploration strategies* per learning unit. Possible strategies: Textbook readings Journal articles Instructor narrative Websites Videos Primary source documents Narrated presentation slides Animations Case studies Diagrams Outlines Handouts Instructional Photos Glossaries Engagement This element includes all modes of course interaction that encourages real world application (student to content, student to student, student to life, student to self). There must be two unique engagement strategies per learning unit. Possible strategies: Interviews Research projects Experiments Art projects Reflective writings Discussion boards Group interactions Problem based learning Version 1 Page 3 of 4

5 Case study analysis Chat Online study sessions Conferences Drag-and-drop activities Mouseover interactives Simulations Games/Puzzles Apps Study guides/worksheets/guided notes Application and Assessment This element includes suggestions for student application of learning unit content or methods for assessment of learning unit objectives (student to faculty, student to student, student to self). There must be one application or assessment mode per learning unit.
