1 APPENDIX 4 FEEDBACK ON ON-LINE AWARENESS TRAINING Equality and Diversity Awareness Training Feedback The online equality and diversity awareness training package was launched in October Since then, (45.4%) currently employed staff have successfully completed the training online, and more than 100 staff have attended face-to-face training (mainly manual staff without access to a computer). 93% of staff (274) who completed the on-line training provided feedback. This indicated that staff felt that: The material was well written (79.2% agreed); The material was well presented (78.1% agreed); The material was well organised (75.2% agreed); The material was easy to navigate (66.8% agreed); The activities were engaging and motivating (52.6% agreed); The assessment quizzes were appropriate (72.3% agreed); The content was necessary and comprehensive (83.9% agreed); Overall the session was valuable (71.2% agreed); They would recommend this session to others (58.4% agreed); and They enjoyed the online experience (41.9% agreed, 10.2% disagreed). Many of the comments provided were very positive, examples include: Great course! This is a very well thought out and assembled training resource Excellent. Interesting and informative. Excellent training, but some managers have their own interpretation of University Policy. It was useful in that it provided an understanding on the work/life balance policies. It was very educational. The material was interesting and updated my earlier knowledge. The training was useful in providing information as to the breadth of coverage of this subject in terms of legislation and adherence by the university and its employees.

2 Training was very informative. Useful and thorough. Great stuff to know. Staff commented that the online training resource was better than face to face training as it was convenient and accessible. However some negative comments were received in relation to the time taken to complete the course: It is very convenient to complete this training on-line but I still saved the word document first, read it and then completed the quizzes as this is an easier option than working through it online. To read the full document and complete the quizzes however takes much longer than 30 mins! It took longer than half an hour to complete. Training was far too detailed and too time consuming. Other negative comments highlighted difficulties navigating the course, problems with the resources section and feedback on the assessment quizzes: I found the navigation through the course quite "clunky". I found that navigation through the course was difficult after completing each quiz there was no way of re-joining the page that I had been on previously. There could have been a link from the end of the quizzes back to the main content. I found it much too slow and prefer to save the core course content, read through it then complete the tasks. One other annoying thing was that every time I clicked save this message appeared 'answer saved, expand the test survey status at the top of the page to view per question status?. I can appreciate that this sort of training is useful, but really, a short video presentation would do the trick: a slow-to-navigate website is really just a waste of time. When I tried to open some of the extra resources I got a message saying, The specified resource was not found or you do not have permission to access it. I found the case studies interesting but would have liked more of them and more detail. In addition, perhaps some interactivity with feedback here would have been helpful (for example, asking learners to respond to the cases with helpful guidance related to the answers). Disability Awareness Training Feedback

3 The online disability awareness training package was first launched on 2 March Since then, 686 (23%) currently employed staff have successfully completed the training, either online, or face-to-face (i.e. Equality and Diversity Services facilitated face-to-face training for manual staff without access to a computer). One third of staff (224) who completed the training provided feedback. This indicated that staff felt that: The material was well written (83% agreed); The material was well presented (83% agreed); The material was well organised (83% agreed); The material was easy to navigate (80% agreed); The activities were engaging and motivating (68% agreed); The assessment quizzes were appropriate (80% agreed); The content was necessary and comprehensive (82% agreed); Overall the session was valuable (80% agreed); They would recommend this session to others (71% agreed); and They enjoyed the online experience (56% agreed, 11 % disagreed). Whilst most of the comments provided were very positive, some technical issues were identified by staff. These focus on the time taken to complete the course, difficulties navigating the course and difficulties getting feedback on the assessment quizzes. For example: Lot of information provided, took quite a bit of time to complete. The course is good and useful, but takes longer than 30 minutes to complete. The duration of the course was misleading - it took much longer to read and assimilate the materials. Whilst I appreciate there is a lot to cover, it took a very long time to go through all the material. Perhaps two shorter modules could be considered. Navigation in the initial stages was difficult to go back to the correct place in the course materials. The online navigation did not operate as it should have and I found that I had to navigate from the beginning after each quiz - very frustrating. Pages were slow to load and blank pages at the start of sections annoying. Would be useful to keep a bookmark of the sections already completed and move automatically to the new materials.

4 Very important and useful information. Navigation between sections and chapters could have been better planned as it caused frustration when downloads took time to happen. The instant feedback mark was great and the opportunity to do the test again if required was reassuring. Otherwise an enjoyable exercise. Course excellent and very informative however unsure at times if answers were saved. It was not clear to me what my overall score was and that I had submitted the completed course. The assessment process is invalid! Perhaps I missed the relevant instructions but it seems that the required answers for the 3-point and 4-point questions were ambiguous. I did not know whether to give one answer (worth 3 points) or three answers (worth one point each). Also, I suspect some points were deducted for giving too many possible answers. These issues (particularly the navigational issues) appear to have been exacerbated with the move to BlackBoard Learn. Alternatively, examples of positive feedback include: Very worthwhile course! It improved my knowledge a lot more on disability awareness. Like the equal opportunities training course this online course is well presented and easy to follow. While I did not find the activities engaging and motivating I believe this is very important information that all staff should be aware of. I was not aware that there was so much legislation in the areas of equal opportunities and disability awareness! I am now a more informed member of staff. Again I saved the word document, read it and then answered the quizzes. Excellent course. I liked the 'Good to Know' information. This was informative and well presented. Couldn t access the audio downloads but could be my machine. The training was very interesting and enjoyable. I enjoyed the online program. Learned things I did not know. I thought I was disability aware and discovered I had a few misconceptions about the correct terminology in some areas, it made for interesting reading.
