Center for Public Health Research The CSISP, Centro Superior de Investigación en Salud Pública (Center for Public Health Research) is a public organisation affiliated with the Valencian Regional Government, with its own legal status, created under the Valencian Public Health Law. It is responsible for implementing the Regional Health Department s policy regarding research in public health; we are a public institution that works very closely with the Direction of Public Health of the Government of Valencia (Generalitat Valenciana). The CSISP aims at developing research-oriented scientific support for the public health policy community, and the Public Health Law created the Center to coordinate all the research in this field that is carried out in Valencia. Specifically, the CSISP is governed by regulations contained in Decree 120/2008, of September 5 th, which approved the statutes of the Centre for Public Health Research. Thus, CSISP represents the effort of the Generalitat Valenciana for the support of policy research in public health, formulated to develop applied research, to gain new knowledge and tools to increase the level of the population s health. The purpose of the CSISP is to develop and coordinate scientific activity proposed by the Direction of of Public Health as a core instrument in its research policy, whilst at the same time providing an environment that facilitates research activity for different external agents whose goals are in alignment with the strategic objectives of the centre. The research developed by the CSISP is multidisciplinary in nature requiring contributions from professionals in the field of public health, health workers and scientists from research centres and universities with the ultimate aim of conducting translational research leading to results that can be applied to health care as well as Public Health activities. The CSISP has different areas of interest in Public Health: Environmental Health, Cancer and Public Health, Vaccines Research, Genomics and Health, Health Inequalities, Rare Diseases, Food Safety, Health Services and Global Health. CSISP s mission is to generate new knowledge through excellence in research and its application in the field of Public Health, to develop this close coordination and to apply research focused on the health needs of citizens. 5

Module 1/ Epidemiological methods and study design Module 2/ HIV/AIDS and Public Health Organizer: Carmen Martos (CSISP) The goal of this course is to provide a background in designs and methods to describe disease occurrence and risk factor associations. The course emphasis is on how to undertake epidemiological research, including study planning, data analyses, and interpretation of results. The course will particularly address the quantitative issues of epidemiology and applications of some statistical techniques. We will discuss how to avoid bias, control confounding effects and detect effect modification at study design and data analysis stages. Lectures will be completed by case studies. Appropriate statistical methods will be integrated with the main epidemiological content, and practical sessions will make use of the R commander computer software Organizer: Marcos E. García-Ojeda (UC Merced) The spread of HIV represents the biggest failure in the history of public health, threatening to undermine hard-won development gains in many countries. In some African countries between half and two thirds of all people 15 years old and older are going to die of AIDS. Since the time that HIV was first identified, there have been significant gains in knowledge about how to prevent and treat HIV infection and mitigate the worst social and economic impacts for individuals, families, and communities. This module examines the epidemic that was first defined in the USA and which continues to spread exponentially in many parts of the world. The module will be divided into three parts: 1) what is known about the natural history of the disease, its transmission, and the spread of the epidemic; 2) what is needed to control the epidemic and to care for those infected; 3) what are the impacts, politics, ethics, policy, and human aspects of the disease. 12

Module 3/ Social Epidemiology Module 4/ Environmental health and food safety Organizers: Manuel Franco (CNIC) and Oscar Zurriaga (CSISP) This course provides students with a systematic and selective overview of conceptual approaches and research findings related to the impact of social context on the health of various populations. The course is divided into 5 sessions; each highlights a different area of research. Lectures and large-group discussions will be in English, however small-group discussions will take place in both English and Spanish. The topics to be addressed include: - The concepts, theory and history of social epidemiology - Social class, inequality and health - Neighborhood conditions and health - Gender, social class and health - Migration and health: the case of reproductive health Emphasis will placed on extending the causal chain thought to be associated with patterns of acute and chronic disease to include upstream factors related to social context. This includes discussion of methods related to the study of social factors across multiple levels; however, this is not intended to be a methods course. The course will be taught as a seminar with brief lectures followed by small-group discussion of assigned readings. Organizers: Ferran Ballester and Vicent Yusà (CSISP) This course will provide an overview of the needs of public health professionals to critically interpret the environmental health and food safety literature and it will provide attendees with the fundamentals and practical experience needed to start scientific work in this area. The goal of the course will be developing knowledge and competences on the field of environmental health and food safety and increasing awareness on risk assessment in these fields. It will provide an orientation to environmental health and food safety as basic tools for evaluating health risks derived from environmental or occupational exposures and diet as well as for evaluating risk analysis derivedfrom the presence of different contaminants in environment or foodstuffs. The course will explore the different tools to evaluate risk analysis concerning public health problems. During the course, the main environmental health topics will be discussed, i.e. air pollution, climate change, occupational exposures, and food and water contamination. The priority residues and contaminants such as metals, veterinary drugs, persistent compounds and biotic contaminants will be studied from public health, occurrence and analytical perspectives. The program includes practical training and combines several seminars and class discussions. 13

Module 5/ Molecular Epidemiology Module 6/ Human Microbiome and Health Organizer: Fernando González Candelas (CSISP) This course will provide an introduction to the concepts and methods of molecular population genetics and evolution applied to specific problems in the short, medium and long-term evolution of infectious microorganisms. Molecular epidemiology is an emerging discipline in the interface between molecular biology, population and evolutionary genetics, and traditional epidemiology interested in providing a perspective on population and epidemic processes from the perspective of the infectious organism. From the origin of new pathogens to the sources of outbreaks or more detailed surveillance, there is an increasing number of uses for molecular epidemiology approaches which practicing epidemiologists should become familiar with. This course provides an excellent opportunity for breaking the initial barriers. Organizer: M. Pilar Francino (CSISP) The course is addressed to graduate students, professionals and practitioners of biology, biomedical research and the health sciences. Some background in molecular biology will be advantageous, though it is not required. The course will consist of theoretical lectures and seminars in the morning and 2 afternoon practicals in molecular biology techniques (day 2) and bioinformatics and biostatistics analysis (day 3). Attendants are welcome to bring their own data. Human microbiome and its relationship to health; molecular biology, genomics and metagenomics; 16/18S rrna and metagenomic approaches to biodiversity analysis; metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analyses of microbial community function; cell population analysis by flux cytometry; sequencing technology; Wet lab on DNA extraction and PCR; Bioinformatics for sequence analyses; Statistics for microbiome analysis and comparison; Bioinformatics and Biostatistics practical (hands on); microbiome, obesity and gastrointestinal disease; microbiome development, atopy and inflammatory/autoimmune diseases. - Research talk on Irritable Bowel Syndrome - Research talk on Clostridium infections after antibiotic treatment. - Research talk on oral microbiome in health and disease - Research talk on skin microbiome in health and disease. 14

Module 7/ Antibiotics and Public Health Organizer: Miriam Barlow (UC Merced). There are many controversial issues surrounding the prescription of antibiotics, the delivery of the best possible health care, and the occurrence of antibiotic resistance. The therapies that are in the best interest of the doctor, the patient, and society as a whole are usually different and in conflict with each other. We will examine these issues as well as the widespread evolution of antibiotic resistance, and what can be done to stop it. 15
