5 Introduction Today s corporate computing environment plays a crucial role in the execution of business processes. This computing environment, the information technology (IT) infrastructure, is the backbone that supports enterprise business processes. Efficient and reliable business processes are paramount to a company s profitability. Consequently, sound investment in IT infrastructure is a necessity. Companies that fail to capitalize on their IT investment can expect increased operating expenses, lower profits, and, ultimately, business failure. To make wise choices about investment in IT infrastructure, it s important to understand how the components of the infrastructure relate to business processes. Figure 1 shows a generalized view of the components that can comprise a company s computing system. Figure 1 Components of an IT Infrastructure The underlying component of this infrastructure is data. Data is the lifeblood of a company. Without its data, a company can t survive. Page 1

6 The Value of Data In today s marketplace, data is a commodity. As such, it must be guarded carefully. If data is unavailable, business processes stop. When a company can t do business, it can t make money. Companies IT groups are charged with safeguarding this precious commodity. IT groups turn to database management systems (DBMSs) for data storage. Although DBMSs are relatively expensive to build and support, they provide the benefits of data sharing (through locking) and data recovery (through logging) that outweigh the overhead incurred. Most mission critical data is stored in one or more DBMSs. DBMSs require monitoring and management for efficient operation. Managing a database requires a valid and tested recovery plan to ensure the availability and recoverability of the mission critical data. Recovery of data is an absolute necessity. Disasters do happen, and people make mistakes. According to a recent industry analyst report, two out of five companies that experience a disaster go out of business within five years. Risks to Data Assets Companies must guard against two fundamental risks to the infrastructure that houses and supports the data for business processes: physical loss due to device failure or catastrophic site disaster logical loss due to application or user error Physical Loss Of these two risks, physical loss is the least likely but potentially the most damaging. Physical loss can range from device failure (which might only degrade performance and cause no outage) to a total, site-wide disaster that renders the entire facility useless. Another recent industry analyst report states that about 20 percent of all recoveries are due to physical failure. Less than five percent of recoveries are due to physical failures that result from a disaster that causes a total site outage. Logical Loss Logical failure accounts for about 80 percent of all recoveries. A logical failure might be caused by an incorrect application program modification, a user entry error, or a security breach. A logical outage can usually be repaired by a DBMS recovery utility or a data cleansing exercise. Depending on the nature of the damage, data loss and application outages might occur. Page 2

7 A backup and recovery plan for both physical and logical failures is a crucial responsibility of IT groups. A detailed disaster recovery plan is useless if local production data is corrupted by an application error. Conversely, the best available tools and procedures for correcting a logical error are wasted if no remote facility is available in the event of a failure at the production site. Recovery Options At a high level, DBMS recovery techniques include: periodic full file system or volume dumps shipped to a remote vault periodic database copies and log archives shipped to a remote vault constant remote site online tape vault for all dumps, copies and logs constant remote site transmission of online logs constant remote site disk mirroring of data and logs Ensuring recoverability typically requires the use of more than one of these recovery techniques. At a minimum, periodic dumps should be taken of the entire production storage environment. This is the cheapest and easiest technique to implement, though it provides little flexibility in terms of recovery point or recovery speed. (The application might lose a week s worth of data, and it might take days to restore the data from the tapes used for periodic dumps. The net impact to business could be a two-week outage.) Synchronously mirroring the entire production infrastructure (storage, processor, network, and so on) is the ultimate recovery assurance. Very aggressive recovery points and recovery speed for disaster recovery can be achieved with this technique approaching zero outages and zero data loss. However, this technique is very expensive and sensitive to distance and environmental change. For a detailed study of advanced technology recovery techniques, see the white paper, Remote Recovery Advanced Technology Solutions for OS/390 Recovery, at Although this white paper was written specifically for the OS/390 environment, many of the technology options it describes have a distributed systems equivalent, and the relative merits are similar. Between the extremes of periodic storage dumps and infrastructure mirroring is a class of cost-effective, software-based, recovery management solutions that can augment application DBMS recoverability. These recovery management solutions increase recovery speed, reduce data loss, and have minimal impact on availability and performance. These solutions include high-speed copy utilities, recovery and log processing utilities, and facilities to help database administrators (DBAs) create application groups and perform operations against them. Page 3

8 Choosing a Recovery Technique The following criteria should be considered when evaluating a recovery technique for a particular application. These criteria are not listed in any particular order priorities differ among applications. recovery time objective (RTO) the speed at which data is recovered recovery point objective (RPO) the tolerance for data loss data integrity the requirement for transaction consistency after recovery availability the tolerance for planned outages for backups performance the tolerance for production performance degradation due to recovery cost the affordability of the technique relative to its benefit to a recovery risk the likelihood that the technique will be successful When considering these criteria, it s important to evaluate the following business and application variables that have an impact on the viability of a recovery technique: For every application, one criterion is most important. This dictates compromise in other criteria. For example, if the RPO for disaster recovery is the most important criterion, then all data must be immediately mirrored to a remote location. The compromise for this technique is considerable cost. Some recovery techniques don t address both physical and logical risks to data. For example, remote mirroring doesn t address the 80 percent of failures due to logic or operator errors. Some applications might have conflicting recovery requirements, making the development of a recovery plan even more challenging. Additional complexity in the recovery plan can lead to increased cost and risk. To address these variables requires an intimate understanding of the components of the IT infrastructure. The ability to provide service management to ensure business process availability becomes critical to the success of the enterprise. A software-based recovery management solution can provide the best balance among the recovery criteria by establishing a cost-effective, rapid recovery that ensures data consistency and minimal data loss, while maximizing availability and minimizing performance degradation. Such a solution offers the most flexibility to satisfy conflicting application recovery requirements, while reducing the complexity of the process. Data is available to mission critical business processes when required, maximizing the return on investment in the IT infrastructure. Page 4
