1 FIELD TRIPS Our fun-filled, content-rich visits for pre-k to grade 12 are free for Illinois students.

2 PLAN YOUR TRIP It s easy and FREE.* To schedule your field trip, complete and return the reservation form or visit chicagohistory.org/fieldtrip. Due to the popularity of school group visits, reservations must be made in advance and in writing. Your visit is not guaranteed until you have received a confirmation letter, which should arrive by fax or (or mail, if requested) in seven to ten days. If you don t receive a confirmation letter, call We look forward to your visit! PLANNING TIPS Plan to spend two to three hours at the Museum including lunch. Visits begin at 9:30 a.m., Monday through Saturday. Request 30-minute lunchroom seating (available up to grade 8). Students should bring their own lunches and beverages; storage is provided. Indicate the size of your group. Maximum group size is 120 for a self-guided visit. Divide your students into groups of ten prior to arriving at the Museum. For workshop reservations, the maximum number of students is sixty-five or two classrooms per day. Secure chaperones: one adult for every ten students in grade 3 and above; one adult for every five students from pre-k to grade 2. Each adult exceeding these ratios will be charged $7. Backpacks are not allowed in exhibition spaces. Place medical supplies and emergency information in a shoulder bag. All Illinois school groups are admitted free of charge. Out-of-state groups are charged discounted admission. Cost: $3 per student Although there are no photographs of the Great Chicago Fire, artists recorded their memories of it so vividly that today, more than a century later, we can understand this important event through their work. This workshop invites students to share written and physical responses to Memories of the Chicago Fire, a historic painting by Julia Lemos. Then, using excerpts from Lemos s written account, take their analysis one step further, gaining insight into the lives of the people who experienced the fire. The workshop concludes with an opportunity for students to create a cover for their own fire narrative. This workshop introduces students to the buildings and innovations of the fair including the first-ever Ferris wheel. Journey back to 1893 through hands-on object and photograph analysis, a mapping exercise, firsthand accounts, and time in the Chicago: Crossroads of America exhibition. Facing Freedom Recommended for grades 7 to 12. Offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays. 75-minute experience per class. Cost: $5 per student Special event: December 2, 2014 Middle and High School Student Symposium 1968 The Whole World Was Watching Tuesday, December 2, 10:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m. Recommended for grades 7 to 12 Free but advance reservations are required. Take a look back at the highs and lows of the year that changed America During this symposium, students will explore this pivotal year through gallery experiences, hands-on artifact analysis, thought-provoking discussions, and art making as well as delve into popular culture and social justice issues of the era. The program is free of charge, but advance reservations are required. Based on the Facing Freedom exhibition, this workshop encourages critical thought about freedom and issues of social justice in American history, particularly in the areas of workers rights, armed conflict, public protest, and race and citizenship. Students become historians as they analyze and discuss objects and then add their own voices to the exhibition curating a display case filled with their selected artifacts and handwritten interpretive text. Robinson Gallery Lincoln s Chicago Catch a glimpse of the city Lincoln knew through portraits of his contemporaries and lithographic views of 1860s Chicago. KPMG and Paul and Katherine Snyder Community Gallery Vivian Maier s Chicago For decades, Vivian Maier worked as a nanny for North Shore families. Loved by the children she cared for, she nonetheless kept a secret she was a talented photographer. Only after her death did her work become well known. In this exhibition, discover her diverse photographs, which capture Chicago s streets in unique ways. Benjamin Green-Field Gallery Railroaders: Jack Delano s Homefront Photography Explore the stories of Chicago railroaders during World War II as captured by photographer Jack Delano. The exhibition features more than sixty large images including several early color photographs of men and women who hustled on the rails, in the stations, and around the yards. Step into a caboose, play at a model rail yard, and discover Delano s legacy through the work of his son, Pablo. Railroaders is presented in partnership with the Center for Railroad Photography & Art with generous support from The Candelaria Fund, CN, Bon and Holly French, David and Cynthia Kahler, North American Railway Foundation, Union Pacific Foundation, and Wintrust Financial. Organized by month, The 1968 Exhibit highlights Chicago as host of the Democratic National Convention in August. Stories of tension and violence, confusion and anxiety form the core of this section of the exhibition. Costume and Textile Gallery Chicago Styled: Fashioning The Magnificent Mile Opens November 15, 2014 Experience the glamour of North Michigan Avenue, one of the country s most celebrated destinations for upscale retail. Set against the shifting cityscape of the past decades, Chicago Styled features twenty-six ensembles including pieces by Gianni Versace, Christian Lacroix, Yohji Yamamoto, and Chanel. Together, these garments tell the story of the growth of this landmark district, showcasing remarkable fashion and the stylish people who wore it. The 1968 Exhibit is produced by the Minnesota History Center in partnership with the Atlanta History Center, Chicago History Museum, and Oakland Museum of California. The Chicago presentation is sponsored by the Guild of the Chicago History Museum and lead corporate sponsor Allstate Insurance Company.
