2 About Canada s Public Policy Forum The Public Policy Forum is an independent, not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of government in Canada through enhanced dialogue among the public, private and voluntary sectors. The Forum s members, drawn from business, federal, provincial and territorial governments, the voluntary sector, and organized labour, share a belief that an efficient and effective public service is important in ensuring Canada s competitiveness abroad and quality of life at home. Established in 1987, the Forum is a leader in public sector research and dialogue. Across jurisdictions, the public sector plays a critical role in supporting democratically elected governments, delivering high-quality services that meet evolving needs, and managing public resources and information in a responsible manner. Given the far-reaching impact of the public sector, all Canadians have a stake in ensuring that public services across the country continue to adapt to new realities and drive better outcomes. To build on our extensive work around public service and governance, the Forum is undertaking a number of key projects over the next three years under the theme of Public Service Next. In collaboration with various partners and stakeholders, this initiative will explore changing dynamics in government and innovative strategies for shaping the public service of tomorrow. PS Next will focus on such timely issues as redefining leadership competencies for the future, developing productivity measures and adapting new technologies. One of our first projects in the PS Next suite was Top Ten Skills: Building the Capacity of the Next Generation of Public Service Leaders, which explored the changing nature of public service and leadership competencies across all levels of government. Numerous emerging and established Canadian leaders were engaged through interviews, roundtables, and various other activities across the country. This research has culminated in a publication -- Flat, Flexible and Forward-Thinking -- that is being broadly disseminated to all participants, public services and the wider policy community. Other ongoing projects include: Public service employee engagement: advice on Blueprint 2020 The Forum is consulting with leaders outside the federal public service on the vision put forward in the Government of Canada s employee engagement strategy, Blueprint Agility: the future of government? Looking at the future of government in Canada, such as the changing factors that influence productivity, this research project involves multi-sectoral interviews and pan-canadian roundtables in partnership with PwC. Public sector productivity: defining the Canadian context This project is focusing on defining the essential elements of public sector productivity, and how it might best be measured and better understood.
