Corporate Social Responsibility and the business lawyer April 2008 Hilton, SPAIN The conference will examine how legal consequences can follow from the espousal, observance or breach of CSR norms. Panel sessions will look at particular aspects such as the relevance of CSR to lawyers and law firms, corporate governance in legal context, international business and the Rule of Law and CSR and litigation. Who should attend? The conference will be relevant to both in-house counsel and private practitioners as well as to company directors, executives and CSR professionals. *As per the Law Society of England and Wales. What sanctions are there when such a corporation is in breach of international law, whether in terms of human rights abuses or otherwise? Further, what CSR norms come within international law? Is the USA - via the venerable Alien Torts Claims Act - the only white knight in shining armour or are other possible remedies also available in Europe? In short, this session will examine what corporate liability, and therefore exposure, there may be in respect of the corporation s activities in the multiple jurisdictions in which it operates. Corporate Social Responsibility Committee Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is variously defined but is generally accepted to denote responsibly grounded business decision-making that considers its impact on people, communities and the environment. The increasing emphasis on CSR has particular importance for lawyers both as advisers to their clients and, in the case of law firms, as enterprises in their own right. The Constituent s remit therefore includes both an examination of the many CSR-related issues on which business clients may seek legal advice from an in-house counsel or external lawyer and the issues which confront lawyers and law firms in relation to their key stakeholders; partners, staff, clients, their professional regulator and the community in which they practice. Corporate Counsel Forum The mission of the Corporate Counsel Forum is to be the pre-eminent forum within the IBA for discussion, education and spokesmanship by, for and among corporate counsel, respecting the proper role and expectations of the professional acting for a corporation. A comprehensive publications and programme effort furthers this mission. In particular, the forum wishes to assist its members in functioning effectively within corporate hierarchies, satisfying business objectives while rendering legal services to the corporation in accordance with the highest professional standards. The forum seeks to maintain a particular focus on topics and themes of this nature which are currently relevant to its membership.
