Transformative Learning: From Theory to Practice The falk College is home to diverse programs that share a common concern for human health and well-being. You can choose from programs in child and family studies, public health, nutrition, social work, and sport management. Professional coursework begins in your first year, allowing you to delve into your major area of interest. Students interested in a pre-med or pre-health major often choose public health, nutrition science, or child and family studies as a major. At the same time, you ll be taking coursework in the liberal arts to broaden your intellect and your outlook in such fields as the humanities and social sciences. You may also pursue a dual major or a minor from within the college or from one of SU s eight other undergraduate colleges. If you aren t sure what you want to pursue, you can enter the college as undeclared, then explore the variety of college and University offerings. In all of the programs, you ll get a good dose of experience outside the classroom to test your knowledge and to put the theory you ve learned in the classroom to practice in the community. Just as the programs foster personal health and well-being, so does the college s commitment to you personally. Peer advisors will help smooth your transition to college life, and caring faculty members will serve as your mentors and academic advisors. In addition, the college s staff members will assist you throughout your academic career, including helping you to choose courses and search for a job. Read on to see everything that the Falk College can offer you. 2 Syracuse University (USPS ) Volume 37, Number 12 July 2011 Syracuse University is an official bulletin of Syracuse University and is published 16 times a year: one time in May and 15 times in July by Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY Periodicals postage paid at Syracuse, New York Postmaster: Send address corrections to Syracuse University, Undergraduate Admissions Processing Center, 621 Skytop Road, Suite 160, Syracuse, NY The Falk College program guide is a joint production by Syracuse University s Division of Enrollment Management and Office of Publications.

Child and Family Studies Cultural, social, and economic factors deeply affect a child and family s development. In child and family studies, you ll explore the forces that shape who we are and how we function within our relationships. The program brings together research, theory, and field work with children and families to give you the well-rounded background you ll need to be a confident and successful professional. You can specialize in early child development or youth and family development, along with the master s degree track in early childhood education (four years undergraduate and a one-year master s). Core coursework covers family development, interpersonal competence, human sexuality, and development of children in the family. A part of your experience may be spent creating activities for children at the Bernice M. Wright Child Development Laboratory School, an inclusive early childhood education program at SU. You may be involved at the Early Education and Child Care Center that provides an innovative and highly regarded educational child care program for SU families and the children it serves. You could also participate in an internship through the University of the West Indies in Trinidad, which focuses on enriched early childhood programs and inclusive education in an international culture. Or, gain experience through a practicum in community organizations, including Head Start, Syracuse City School District, and SUNY Upstate Medical University. And if you re interested in research, you can join faculty members as they study such areas as marriage and intimacy, crises in families, and parenting. As a graduate of child and family studies, you can explore such careers as preschool teacher, program supervisor, case manager, and community service director. Or, pursue graduate training in child and family studies, social work, health, law, or education. 4 falk.syr.edu Working at the Bernice M. Wright Child Development Laboratory School on campus, I planned lessons and activities to see what worked best and where I needed improvement. I always looked forward to every Tuesday and Thursday to see what the children had in store for me! Cassi Rebisz 10

Public Health Are you interested in health and wellness and energized by the idea of motivating others to lead healthier, more active lives? In public health, you can explore practical solutions to promote positive health changes in public and private settings. Graduates of the public health program build community, corporate, and college health programs; design health messages to inspire people to action; and pursue medical careers. Your foundation starts with courses in biology, mathematics, writing, oral communication, nutrition, and psychology. You and your professors will then explore such topics as the health of individuals, families, and communities; health literacy; epidemiology; environmental health; public health administration; health policy and research; and substance abuse and addiction. Public health involves immersion with practitioners. With input and guidance from faculty, you will design an individual nine-credit senior internship and capstone project in a public health agency or other professional setting. You can also pursue research with faculty members. Students in public health have many opportunities to pursue their passion outside of the classroom. You can be part of the student club, an affiliate of the Society for Public Health Education; write for the award-winning student health magazine, Healthy You; or play a role in student-led research at the Syracuse-area Amaus Clinic for the uninsured. With your degree, you can find your place in the preventive health services in wellness centers, college health services, or community agencies. You can also pursue further studies in health-related social sciences (medical anthropology, medical sociology, or health psychology), law, and the health professions (medicine, nursing, physician assistance, pharmacy, or dentistry). I volunteered at Amaus Health Services ever since freshman year. A clinic for the uninsured in Syracuse, it introduced me to many of the inequalities and injustices that are present in today s health care system. Caitlin Cornell 10 falk.syr.edu 7

Nutrition Science and Dietetics Public interest in healthy lifestyles, the childhood obesity epidemic, and a growing aging population continue to spur demand for professionals with nutrition expertise. The Falk College offers bachelor of science degrees in nutrition dietetics and nutrition science to put you at the forefront of this field. In the nutrition dietetics major, you ll study the science of applying food and nutrition to health, and take the first step toward becoming a registered dietitian. The degree in nutrition science incorporates the study of biological and physical sciences and prepares you for a career in nutrition research or pre-health or with major food and pharmaceutical companies. Your hands-on coursework will take place in the Experimental Foods Laboratory, where you ll study small-quantity food preparation and food science. In the Nutrition Science Laboratory, you ll experiment in a traditional wet lab to observe the effects of specific nutrients on animal or human cells. Your coursework might include Weight Management, Obesity, and Disordered Eating; Community Nutrition; and Nutrition Counseling. Put your skills to the test with Orange Wrap, a student group that provides campus programs on healthy eating. You may also want to go international with a custom course titled Food, Wine, Culture, and Health The Mediterranean Diet, which takes place at SU s campus in Florence, Italy. As a nutrition graduate, you ll find professional opportunities in hospitals, schools, long-term care facilities, and health clinics. Graduates also find their niche in such non-traditional settings as journalism, business, and marketing. Nutrition science students also pursue post-graduate work in medicine, dentistry, and education, while nutrition dietetic students apply for 1,200 internships in accredited dietetic programs across the country. 8 falk.syr.edu As an intern with the New York State Department of Health s Division of Nutrition, I worked on a menu evaluation project and learned about the importance of childhood nutrition in child care settings. 13 Social Work Social workers address some of today s most important societal issues through work with individuals, families, and communities. As a student in the School of Social Work, you will be prepared to meet the challenges of diverse populations in areas that include substance abuse counseling, school social work, health care, public policy, gerontology, and mental health services. Many students pursue complementary minors in African American studies, gerontology, policy studies, social welfare, psychology, and women s studies. Outside the classroom, you can find your niche by working in a local human services agency for your 16-plus-hour-a-week social work practicum. At the same time, you will take social work practice courses and participate in a field seminar. Other opportunities include the New York City Social Welfare History Tour, in which you can study the development of U.S. social welfare. You may also join the discussion at the annual Legislative Policy Day, where students engage political and governmental leaders on major legislative issues. With your bachelor s degree in social work, you are eligible to apply for the master of social work (M.S.W.) advanced standing program in the Falk College or other advanced standing M.S.W. programs across the country. With this program, you can complete an M.S.W. degree in 10 months instead of two years. While advanced field positions generally require a master s degree in social work, entry-level positions are readily available for graduates with bachelor s degrees in social work. You can work as a mental health counselor, school social worker, substance abuse counselor, case manager, or family services social worker. My field placement at Hospice of CNY allowed me to carry a small caseload and confirmed this is the career path I wish to follow. The best part of working at Hospice has been the relationships I have built with my patients and their families. Sonja Gottbrecht 09 falk.syr.edu 11

Sport Management Falk College s degree in sport management is your ticket into one of the largest and most exciting industries in the United States and globally. Turn your passion for sports into a rewarding career in sport business and finance, marketing, promotion, communications, event planning, facility management, or sports organization management. A combination of program-specific courses, professional electives, and liberal arts requirements position you to land significant jobs in the industry. You might take Principles of Sales in Sport, Sport Law, or Sport Event Sponsorship. Your classes in sport management will allow you to put theory into practice, with opportunities like the Key Bank 44 Rewards program, where students develop marketing campaigns aimed at SU sports fans. In addition, the required 12-credit senior capstone project will provide you with hands-on experience in the industry. Students have been placed with the U.S. Olympic Committee, New England Patriots, National Baseball Hall of Fame, IMG, ESPN, YES Network, Philadelphia Eagles, Boston Celtics, Houston Astros, SU Athletics, Deutsch Advertising, and the PGA Golf Tour. As an extension of this department, the David B. Falk Center for Sport Management offers opportunities for faculty-student research projects and specialized training that will prepare you for executive positions in the sport industry. You may also join the Sport Management Club, which organizes the annual Charity Sports Auction to benefit local charities, or the SU chapter of Women in Sports and Events. Or get involved with Syracuse Steiner Collectibles, a business partnership with Steiner Sports Marketing where students market SU game-used merchandise and collectibles. As a sport management graduate, you can pursue such professional careers as a sports information director, facility manager, sports journalist, promotion director, event planner, and sponsorship director. I chose SU because it had everything I wanted out of a college experience: great academics, big-time sports, a social atmosphere, and a major that fits perfectly into my interests. Who could ask for more? Brad Kallet falk.syr.edu

Consider Your Options: Undeclared Students Discovering what you want to do with your life is one of the most exciting parts of being a student. At Syracuse University, you don t have to declare your final major until the second semester of your sophomore year. That leaves plenty of time to explore majors by taking interesting courses offered all across campus, including courses in the Falk College. Being undeclared is not unusual. In fact, many colleges and universities don t even let you choose a major until your sophomore year. At SU, students often start as undeclared and take a semester or two to look around at Falk College s six majors and the 200-plus majors at the University. There are academic, faculty, and career advisors to help you select courses and activities that will allow you to learn about various programs before you make your final decision. Once you decide, you ll be assisted in declaring a major in the Falk College or transferring to one of the other colleges in the University. Your decision on the major that s right for you is an important step toward your future career. And you ll receive the support you need to get you there. If you re undecided, don t worry. You ll have the chance to take a lot of different classes before you get to decide what major you want. Try new things your first semesters. You might be surprised at what you like. 19 Faculty Focus: Passion and Professionalism Professor Luvenia Cowart and the Genesis Health Project Network transform the Syracuse community When the National Institutes of Health honored pioneers across the country for their roles in eliminating health disparities, the Falk College s Professor Luvenia Cowart, Ph.D., was one of those recognized. She was honored at a ceremony along with Donna E. Shalala, former secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; David Satcher, 16th surgeon general of the United States; the late U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.); and President Bill Clinton. Cited for her leadership in eliminating health disparities in African Americans through the Genesis Health Project Network, which she founded in 2005, Cowart and her collaborative community team have accomplished numerous milestones in addressing health disparities through health seminars, fitness programs, educational programs at barbershops, and healthy lifestyle activities with churches in Syracuse. One of the activities, Tennis Shoes Sunday, brings together congregants and pastors from 10 Syracuse-area churches. In this annual event, participants wear tennis shoes to church and participate in a two- to three-mile walk following Sunday morning services to support healthy behaviors. The Genesis Project is part of a larger minority health initiative, in partnership with the Falk College, corporate donors, government agencies, and other regional groups. They aim to reduce health disparities, obesity, and its related health risks, such as diabetes, and to promote healthy lifestyles among African Americans in the Syracuse community. SU students are involved with the Genesis Project on many levels, including through the course Bridging the Gap: Community-Based Learning Experiences. The class partners SU students with Genesis Project programs through internships. As future health care leaders, policy makers, and practitioners, the students learn to address health disparities and other major public health concerns that plague poor and underserved populations. Cowart is a Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellow, with academic interests focused on public health and health education among minorities, community partnerships and interdisciplinary collaborations, and health disparities and mental health issues. Health engagement in nontraditional settings has made a vast difference in the lives of many. Churches remain the cornerstone of the minority community and are pivotal to the health of those communities, Cowart says. The commitment of our church pastors, lay health advocates, community partners, and sponsors continues to fuel the vision to eliminate health disparities among African Americans and people of color. Syracuse University s Scholarship in Action vision encourages ways for higher education to address the serious local and global challenges that lay ahead. The Genesis Project has created a strong foundation to address health disparities locally. Through national, regional, and local recognition, the project has provided a best-practice model for other communities to follow. falk.syr.edu 17

Campus Life At Syracuse University, situated high on a hill overlooking the City of Syracuse, you ll enjoy the best of two worlds. It s large enough to offer a wide array of academic programs, student organizations and performing arts groups, and a Division I athletics program. But it s also small enough to ensure that you ll easily feel at home within the intimate community of your home college. SU students come from all 50 states and more than 100 countries, and they choose from among more than 200 majors offered in SU s nine undergraduate schools and colleges. Regardless of your major or your home college, you ll build lasting relationships with like-minded peers and mentoring faculty members. On Main Campus, you ll find a mix of classic and contemporary academic buildings and a sweeping Quad where you can enjoy lunch, toss a Frisbee, or just stretch out on the grass for a little idle skygazing. Residential housing is provided either on Main Campus or on South Campus, the latter of which is located about a mile away and served by a free shuttle. There are also living and learning communities to promote connections with your classmates around common interests. Most of SU s 21 residence halls are equipped with lounge space, laundry rooms, and recreation space. Many also have a computer lab, café, or exercise area. Wireless capabilities are available in most locations across campus. At mealtime, you can choose from five residential dining centers, two student centers with dining services, numerous cafes, and two campus groceries. Outside of class, you can choose from more than 300 student organizations, including performing arts groups; sports teams; and student-run print, radio, and broadcast media, to name a few. Work out, swim, or join a pick-up basketball game at one of our recreation facilities; take in a concert or lecture at Hendricks Chapel; or get involved in any number of service opportunities through the Mary Ann Shaw Center for Public and Community Service. Opportunities for involvement extend into the community as well, with the Universitycity Connective Corridor initiative linking the campus with downtown galleries, museums, theaters, music venues, and cultural festivals. 18 falk.syr.edu

The City The mini-metropolis of Syracuse, New York, fuses distinctive neighborhoods, yearround festivals, parks, professional sports, destination shopping, and a thriving art, music, and social scene. View American impressionism at the Everson Museum of Art. Hike the trails at Green Lakes State Park. Browse the shops in historic Armory Square. You ll soon find that the University campus and city community are deeply intertwined. You can take classes downtown at SU s modern Warehouse building, which houses community art spaces and a creative problem-solving lab. You may also want to join faculty, staff, and other students as they work with the city on planning the Connective Corridor, a three-mile urban design project that links the University with the city s cultural attractions. Beyond the community, you may be tempted to take a road trip. Just down the road are the Finger Lakes. Venture north to ski, hike, or gaze at the Adirondack Mountains. Explore the area s landscape, and you ll soon discover the city and region s distinctive character and robust spirit. Join other Central New Yorkers in capturing the energy of each of the four seasons: brilliant color displays in fall, snowy ski trails in winter, flower-filled parks in spring, and balmy beaches in summer. Come see for yourself. We invite you and your family to visit Syracuse University to experience the campus and community, and meet with our faculty, staff, and students. The Office of Admissions is open Monday through Friday and selected Saturdays in the fall and spring. Call in advance to schedule a visit. falk.syr.edu 19
