The way to cool jobs, a great life style, and independence is through education and job skills. Remember, everyone has to work, but how and where you work is up to you. We provide FREE technical instruction which will give you the additional skills that employers are looking for. Our classes are equipped with modern state-of-the-art instructional systems that prepare you to enter into the world of work. Take the first step in your career by attending YV-TECH. Earn free college credits.
3 YV-TECH is an extension of the student s home high school functioning as an off campus training site. What do students gain from attending YV-TECH? Hands-on training from instructors who come from business and industry. Train on state-of-art equipment that is currently used in business and industry. Develop basic skills, career development skills, and entry-level occupational competencies at no cost to the student. Participate in a wide range of leadership activities and programs. Receive free college credits through the Tech Prep program. Develop a personal career portfolio. Have an edge in the hiring process with YV-TECH on your resume.
4 Health & Human Services Cosmetology Cosmetology offers a wide range of skills to students interested in the salon business. We have three locations Sakie International, Professional Beauty School, and Sunnyside Beauty Academy. Students in this program learn to cut, color, perm, and style hair. They gain techniques in manicures, pedicures, facials and hair removal too. The program is also designed to teach students salon management, planning and how to own your own salon.
5 Careers in Education This course introduces students to the responsibilities and duties expected of a para educator. Classroom study includes building expertise in spoken and written language skills. Students learn about the careers and licensing necessary to hold positions such as para educator, teacher, principal, and specialists in various support areas. Students sharpen their skills by working with Yakima School District elementary teachers and assist them in lesson planning. Dental Assisting Students learn oral anatomy, infection control, oral pathology, preventive dentistry and radiography (X-ray). Other course objectives include chair-side procedures, impressions and study models, safety standards and regulations. Students spend eight weeks observing in a dental office and then go on to complete a ten-week internship.
6 Fire Fighting Cadet Training Course Students learn the basic duties of city, rural, and wild land fire fighting skills. The course will include the basics of fire science and equipment operation of fire engines, power tools, emergency medical apparatus, and functioning on a fire fighting team. Law Enforcement/CSI The Law Enforcement/ CSI training program gives you an in-depth look into careers such as homeland security, state and federal law enforcement agencies, corrections, court positions and investigations. Students receive hands-on training in critical analysis, conflict resolution, record keeping, fingerprinting investigation procedures, patrol procedures,
7 criminal procedures, and traffic laws. Work with trained professionals in a growing career field. Medical Sciences/Nursing This program prepares students for entry-level medical positions or further medical education as well as eligibility for the NAC test. The course includes preparation to be a Washington State Nurse Assistant Certified. Education and preparation begins in the classroom and a medical care laboratory. Students must complete 120 hours of hands-on training in a local hospital and long-term care center. Studies include introduction to nursing, ethical and legal issues, medical terminology, basic human needs and communications, safety and mobility, measuring and recording vital signs, and other special care procedures. Students can potentially earn 21 Allied Health credits from YVCC. This class is also offered at our YV-TECH facility in Sunnyside.
8 Physical, Occupational, and Fitness Therapy Demand is on the rise for educated and skilled Therapy-Rehabilitation Specialists. This oneyear program is designed for the student who is interested in the vast, wonderful, and everadvancing medical/health sciences field. It is also the foundation that you can use to pursue and build the medical career of your choice; with the emphasis on knowledge and skills in the Physical, Occupational, and Fitness Therapy realm. This course covers basic anatomy of bones, muscles and body systems, medical terminology, and medical charting. Physical, Occupational, and Fitness Therapy offers hands-on training in patient care, emergency first aid, applying support; ace wraps, bracing, and taping. After completion of this course students will be eligible to apply for entry-level positions as an Aide/Technician in Physical, Occupational, and/or Fitness facilities.
9 Information Technology Digital Media The Digital Media class offers the most advanced entertainment production program in the valley. Through hands-on training, state-of-the-art equipment, and software, you ll be training in a studiosimulated environment. You will gain skills in audio and video editing, 3D computer animation, multitrack instrument and voice recording, high definition videography, movie production, special effects and much more. This course gives you the opportunity to create programming for YES-TV Cable Channel 12, a 24-hour educational television station. You also have access to 88.5 KYVT-FM a student ran radio station. Both YES-TV and KYVT-FM are located in the Digital Media classroom. Start your career in digital media and entertainment technology at YV-TECH.
10 Computer Electronics and Networking Students will develop the knowledge and skills to analyze, troubleshoot, and repair basic electronic circuits. Once students have completed the electronics portion of the course they will be provided with the necessary training to understand the operation of personal computers, software and related peripheral devices. Disk drives, mother-board and other computer hardware will be introduced along with operating systems and networking fundamentals as the students follow an A+ Certification model. Basic web page design in HTML, Dreamweaver, Flash, and Photoshop found in Adobe Master Collection CS3 will also be covered to help the student in creating an electronic portfolio. Programming through Gaming Students will learn the process of creating video games and 3D animation production. Students will use various computer languages to learn object-oriented programming. They will also use Real Time Interactive Simulation (RTIS), which is used in many types of industries. Students will develop analytical skill-building game play scenarios and storylines. Students with an aptitude for creativity will produce visual designs and artwork needed to create the gaming environment. The programming, analytical, and creativity skills learned in the course can be used in many different vocations. Strong mathematic skills recommended.
11 Business & Marketing Fashion Management, Marketing, Merchandising The course is designed to give students skills in customer service, promotions, and merchandising clothing, designing a display case, and creating an advertising campaign. They also learn about the fashion industry and how fashions are designed, promoted and merchandised. Students take a trip to Seattle every year to visit the Nordstrom corporate office, talk with the buyers, and meet the designers! Students participate in internship programs at area retail stores. Legal/Medical Office Procedures This course is designed to develop the skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary to prepare students for entry-level work in a professional office environment. Students choose medical or legal curriculum after learning basic business communications and practices. The medical course includes medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and medical transcription. The legal course includes terminology, legal document
12 preparation, and legal transcription. There are internship opportunities at local hospitals, medical offices, legal offices and the courthouse. These often lead to employment. Automated Office Skills This course offers skills needed in today s office environment using computer related office software, business machines such as digital cameras, copy machines and calculators. Students also learn to develop skills in leadership, communications, and interpersonal and human relations.
13 Culinary Arts Management The program is designed to help high school students who have an interest in pursuing a career in food service gain an understanding of the industry through education as well as direct exposure. In the kitchen students create their own food products from scratch. Culinary Arts prepares students for jobs as personal chefs, catering operations, line chefs, bakers, servers, wine stewards, and managers.
14 Industrial Technology Automotive Technology Students in this program study design, theory and operations of gasoline engines, chassis, powertrains, brakes, and computerized ignition and fuel injection systems. The program is hands-on, and the students perform live customer service work. The well-equipped shop offers state-of-the-art tools and equipment that is shared with YVCC. The class is an AYES and NATEF certified program. Collision Repair This course teaches basic metal properties, welding techniques on specialized metals, plastic repairs, and surface preparation. Students learn in the classroom and in a real collision repair facility. Students train on specialized tools, and learn how to estimate damages, and provide customer service. They also gain skills by smoothing fenders, removing and replacing auto body parts, and painting.
15 Carpentry The Carpentry course prepares students to work in a carpentry apprenticeship program. Students enrolled in this course learn basic competencies such as; safety, basic hand tools, materials, measuring, and practical math skills. After learning the basics they progress to power tool operation, and other mock-up projects. From there they work in teams on projects such as tables, small sheds, renovation of houses, and small buildings. Robotics Manufacturing This program gives students a working knowledge of the science and technology of robotics used in industry today. The course includes the different kinds of hardware, tools, measuring devices, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic and electronic components that are used in designing and building robotic equipment and also the sensors and controls used with robotics in the industrial and manufacturing environment. The course includes the design, manufacture, testing and competition of a robot in the First Robotics Challenge.
16 Applied Math The YV-TECH Applied Math classes are geared toward students that need an extra math credit to graduate. The course is ONE trimester long, four days a week, in three hour and fifteen minute sessions. Students enrolled in Applied Math are able to earn a math credit and still continue in their YV-TECH classes. You can also enroll in Applied Math as a stand alone class. Applied Math 1 This class covers topics such as fractions, decimals and percents, problem solving, rounding and estimation, English and metric units of measurements, using charts and graphs, lines and angles, two-dimensional and three-dimensional area and volume, ratios and proportions.
17 Applied Math 2 This class is a continuation of Applied Math 1 and covers areas such as scientific notation, precision accuracy and tolerance, powers and roots of numbers, using formulas to solve problems, linear and non-linear equations, graphing data, other algebra skills. In the past year, just over 100 students have taken the Applied Math class at YV-TECH and have had an overall passing rate of 85%. For more information contact YV-TECH at
18 Tech Prep You Can Earn Free College Credits In High School! Tech Prep is a way to start a college technical major in high school. The Yakima Valley Community College Tech Prep program allows YV-TECH students to begin their course of study in high school and continue at YVCC. The result can be an Associate of Applied Science Degree in a technical career field. Tech Prep provides: a head start in a two-year Associate of Applied Science degree (AAS). a solid basis of academic study. learning necessary technical skills for employment in technical careers. free college credits.
19 Students that successfully complete all the competencies in a given program with a grade of B or better will have college credits posted to a transcript at YVCC at NO Cost to the student.
