Course Location: Building 250, Room 115 (lab), Nanaimo Campus Denise Denise.Hook@viu.ca and Maureen Maureen.LaFleche@viu.ca Class Times: 9:00 a.m. 4:30 pm Class Location: Building 250, Room 115, Nanaimo Campus COURSE DESCRIPTION An introduction to technology and alternative communication systems across the lifespan. Topics include exposure to current technology supporting learning, exposure to technology supporting daily living skills, introduction to communication systems, and knowledge of local resources that support technology and people living with challenges.

2 Page 2 COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES On successful completion of this course, participants will be able to: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the basic terminology used in the field of assistive technology and augmentative communication. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the impact of assistive technology and augmentative communication on the lives of individuals with disabilities across the lifespan. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of communication boards and visual supports. Demonstrate a beginning knowledge of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Differentiated Instruction (DI) as it applies in school and community settings. Demonstrate basic knowledge and understanding of augmentative communication devices. Demonstrate basic knowledge and use of assistive technology software, hardware and resources that may be used by individuals with disabilities to assist in achieving educational goals and activities applicable to daily living. Identify and evaluate appropriate resources applicable to augmentative communication and assistive technology. REQUIRED TEXTS All required readings will be available on-line or distributed in class. Some of the online reading will be from Closing the Gap Solutions (CTG). CTG is an online subscription that has numerous articles that highlights what is currently happening in the area of Assistive Technology and Augmentative Communication. You can obtain a full subscription (at a reduced student rate) or obtain a 2 day free trial to Closing the Gap Solutions by clicking on link - ADDITIONAL REQUIRED MATERIALS 1. One USB flash drive to copy and save data from the lab (please load some of your pictures and music onto the flash drive: 20 pictures, 5 songs). 2. One set of headphones with microphone for use in the computer lab.

3 Page 3 METHOD OF STUDENT EVALUATION Description 1. WebQuest / Scavenger Hunt (DUE October 5 th ) Given a handout detailing a hypothetical scenario, students will search the internet to find specific websites and information that will help you support students/adults who have a range of disabilities.. % of Final Grade 30 % 2. Develop two different visual supports using Boardmaker Plus! v. 6 (DUE October 26 th ) Students will be expected to create a visual support and a communication board using Boardmaker Plus! v. 6. These supports should be suitable for use by/with an individual in a specific school or community situation. Visual supports are essential in assisting students/adults that have access, learning, and communication difficulties become successful in the activities in school and the community. In addition, students will turn in a brief written description that outlines in what situations the visual support can be used and how it is intended to be used to the support with the student/adult. 30 % 3. Final Project: Power Point / Prezi Assignment describing a Teaching 30 % Tool (DUE November 30 th ) Students will create an accessible book OR describe and critique a teaching tool (software program, idevice App or assistive device) using PowerPoint, Prezi or a presentation type App (or a tool of choice as discussed with instructor). The project should be suitable for use by/with an individual in a specific school or community situation. The final project must include multiple features of PowerPoint/Prezi, or chosen tool. Students will present their finished product to the class on November 30 th. *20% of mark will be for description and critique of tool, program or app (who would use it and why; demonstrate knowledge gathered throughout course). 10% is for skill in using the presentation tool. 4. Attendance and participation 10 % Total 100 % Students will receive a mark and feedback for Assignment 3 after classes have ended.

4 Page 4 HANDLING OF STUDENT WORK 1. Students are responsible for retaining a copy of all submitted work. 2. All assignments to be submitted to the instructors at the beginning of class. 3. Every effort will be made to return assignments to students within three weeks. 4. Students can make an appointment with their instructor to review and discuss their assignments or course grade. 5. Review Late Policy below. 6. Final grades will be posted on Desire2Learn. Students with documented disabilities requiring academic and/or exam accommodation should contact Disability Services, Building 200 or call as soon as possible so that accommodations can be made for the course. Disability Services ATTENDANCE Attendance and participation in classes and seminars is mandatory. Students are required to contact the instructor in advance if they are unable to attend classes. Unapproved or multiple missed classes will result in loss of marks. LATE POLICY All assignments are to be submitted to the instructor by the due date. If, due to illness or emergency this will not be possible, please discuss this with the instructor (before the due date) and an individual revised due date may be established. Any assignment received more than three calendar days late without negotiation may not be accepted. If accepted, the late penalty will be determined by the instructor. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY Academic integrity is to be maintained at all times. There are five values that underpin academic integrity (these are also consistent with professional standards): honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility.
