5 What does the FAFSA do? The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is used to collect the data needed for the FM (Federal Methodology) calculation, used to determine the expected family s contribution (EFC). Data reported on the FAFSA includes: Information to determine dependency status Household size and number in college Taxable income, untaxed income, and assets Type of tax return filed and income tax paid Age of the older parent or independent student Number of wage earners State of legal residence Child support paid
6 Awarding Aid The FAFSA calculates a Need Analysis for the student: This is the method by which financial aid measures the amount of assistance a student and their parents will be required to meet his/her educational costs. Two basic components: 1. Cost of Attendance the amount it will cost a student to attend an institution during a period of enrollment (academic year). 2. Expected Family Contribution the family s ability to contribute toward the cost of attendance.
7 What is Cost of Attendance or Budget?
