After the Second World War an attempt to create a unified university with faculties across the whole Region, incorporating the cities of Ancona and Ascoli Piceno over and above the historical cities, was thwarted and subsequently each university went its own way. In Ancona, a consortium for the creation of nonhumanity orientated faculties, namely Economics, Engineering, Medicine and Agriculture was established. Due to its central position and its importance as a harbour city, the faculty of Economics and Commerce, affiliated to the university of Urbino, was opened in Ancona in This was the birth of the fourth Università Marchigiana, which became renowned for the prestige of its lecturers and the high number of students attracted by it. The faculties of Engineering and Medicine, which formed the core of the state university, were opened in In 1982 the addition of the Faculty of Economics and Commerce was a natural progression from the previous affiliation to Urbino. The Faculty of Agriculture commenced in 1988 and ultimately the faculty of Science, with a strong focus on marine science in The five faculties: Agriculture; Economics; Engineering; Science and Medicine and Surgery are comprised of departments and institutes. The university has a complement of 560 lecturers and researchers, 568 administrative and technical employees and enrolled students. 4 5

4 2. Università Politecnica delle Marche 2. Università Politecnica delle Marche THE UNIVERSITY AND CULTURE Through its faculties the University has created a professional and technical centre responding not only to the needs of the city, but also to regional and transregional needs. The University operates on three levels: Recruitment of lecturers: a dynamic and pluralistic milieu has been created by the absorption of lecturers from other historic universities. Scientific and Technological Research: including a strong network of national and international contacts. Cultural and Conference activities: have enabled a large number of Italian and foreign students to visit the city. As part of its role as Universitas, in entirety, the University organizes and promotes various cultural activities including classical music concerts performed by the Orchestra Filarmonica Marchigiana (Philharmonic Orchestra of the Marche Region). Aula Magna d Ateneo (the assembly hall of the University) at the Technical and Scientific centre of Monte Dago is principally the venue for these performances. ORGANIZATION The University has complete didactic, scientific, organizational, administrative, and financial autonomy. It has its own statute of internal rules and provides a public service. The University activities are overseen by: The Rector, who is the president and the legal representative of the University. He heads the academic Senate and the Board of directors and has decisive power over all University matters. The Administrative Director, who reports directly to the Rector, applies directives issued by the Rector, and is responsible for the central administration of the University. 5 INTRODUCTION Recently, the Italian university system has been reformed. The new qualifications awarded by the universities have been divided into 42 classes, referring to general subject areas within which one or more degree courses may be organized. These classes have been decided by the National Education Minister and are common to all higher education institutions. Within these classes each institution can establish a range of different curricula, depending on the specific programme and defined degree level. Degrees can be classified as follows: a three year degree (Laurea) or first level degree that grants a good overall education, but also specific professional competence; a five year degree (Laurea magistrale) or second level degree, which requires two additional years of study after the three year degree and grants an advanced and qualified professional training in specific fields, with the exception of those degrees relating to the Health Sciences and Architecture which are conceived as complete five (or six)- year degrees from the start. To graduate students need to accumulate a certain number of academic credits: 180 for Laurea, 300 ( ) for Laurea magistrale. An academic credit corresponds to 25 hours of work. Presuming that a students works 1500 hours per year, he/she can accumulate at least 60 credits (and even more if he/she works more than 1500 hours) per year. Our credits are based on the ECTS rules. 3. structures of studies FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE three-year degree course (undergraduate studies): agricultural science and technology viticulture and oenology forestry and environmental science science of food two-year specialist degree courses (graduate studies): science of food and nutrition agricultural science and technology FACULTY OF ECONOMICS GIORGIO FUÀ three-year degree courses (undergraduate studies): economics and business administration economics and commerce economics and finance social work territorial economics and tourism economics, markets and business administration (San Benedetto del Tronto) two-year specialist degree courses (graduate studies): finance, banking and insurance economics and business economics and management social and no-profit organizations FACULTY OF ENGINEERING three-year degree course (undergraduate studies): civil engineering industrial production engineering (Fabriano) building construction and savage engineering telecommunications engineering production management engineering (Pesaro) electronic engineering IT and automation engineering logistic and production engineering (Ancona and Fermo) mechanical engineering environmental and land planning engineering biomedical engineering three-year distance learning degree course (undergraduate studies): held in teledidactics by N.E.T.T.U.N.O. THE CITY Greek colonists exiled from Siracusa to a site inhabited since prehistoric times founded Ancona in 390 BC. Its name, in fact, derives from the Greek Ankon elbow due to the shape of the bay. Ancona is also called Dorica, which comes from the name Dori, immigrants from the Greek Mainland. The city became Roman municipium, in 295BC and its name was latinized to Ancon or Anconae. In the second century AD, the emperor Traiano widened the port and a triumphal arch was constructed in his honour. After the Byzantine period, in which Ancona was one of the maritime Pentapoli cities under the dependence of Ravenna, the city became part of Church territory but maintained its autonomy by paying an annual fee. In 1532 Pope Clemente VII (Giulio de Medici) ordered military occupation of Ancona annexing it to the Church State. In 1860, Ancona was encompassed into the Italian Kingdom. It was bombed and destroyed in both world wars. The elbow extends from Mount Conero and stretches out into a series of cliffs, which have taken on various names: Trave, Passetto, and Gallina. Between Passetto and the port, the cliffs form three hills: the Cardeto, the Cappuccini and the Guasco, where a large part of the old city and the splendid Cathedral of Saint Ciriaco are situated. To the south, stands the Astagno hill, crowned by the bastion of the living in Ancona Ancona in general Citadel. As it is the case in all Adriatic towns, the sun rises from the sea; however Ancona is unique in respect that, due to the elbow, during summer the sun also sets over the sea, in front of Mount Ardizio, Pesaro, which marks the edge of the Dorica gulf. The city is business-orientated, with naval traffic in the port busiest on Saturdays. Very characteristic is the fishing port, Mandracchio, located around Lazzaretto by Vanvitelli. To appreciate and sense the atmosphere, the best time to visit is at dawn, when the fishing boats return and the fish market begins. At Passetto, on the first slope of Conero, a swarm of caves, fashioned long ago as simple shelters for boats have been transformed into marine pied a Terre, often furnished with all modern comforts. This cave phenomenon is unique and merits a walk along the shore, accessible via steps leading down from the Monumento ai Caduti (the Monument to the War Victims). Every evening Ancona is filled with young people strolling the centre along Corso Garibaldi, between Piazza Cavour and Piazza Roma, along Corso Mazzini and in Piazza del Plebiscito (also called Piazza del Papa). Markets, where one may find bargains and a colourful and characteristic atmosphere, animate the mornings. The central market winds along Corso Mazzini and is open Tuesday to Saturday with a scaled down version open in the afternoons during certain periods. Still in the centre the fruit market (Piazza Erbe) is worthy of a visit. Here

11 living in Ancona 7. living in Ancona Ancona in general country vendors arrive with their mornings harvest. Piazza d Armi, in the Piano zone has a market, particularly lively on Tuesdays and Fridays, but only open until midday. A smaller market is held in via Maratta, in the Adriatic quarter, around the Sacred Heart Church. (Chiesa del Sacro Cuore) There are periodic fairs, such as the San Ciriaco fair (around 4th May), the Antiques and Crafts fair at the Rione arches (3rd weekend in the month) and the Salotto in Fiore in piazza del Plebiscito (May and September). Numerous parties, exhibitions, and festivals take place throughout the year, especially during the summer months. An event in particular, is Anconamare. This takes place in September and is a celebration of Ancona s traditional and deep links to the sea. There are exhibitions, marine sports, gatherings and shows. THE SURROUNDING AREA Twelve kilometres from the city towards Mount Conero lies the Portonovo peninsula. Here one finds two buildings of note: the guard tower, dedicated to Pope Clemente XI; and the fivenaves basilica dedicated to Saint Maria of Portonovo. There are various places of interest for the tourist South of Ancona: Sirolo; Numana; Loreto with its sanctuary; Recanati, birth place of the poet Giacomo Leopardi; Camerano and Castelfidardo, home of the accordion factories. To the North: Senigallia and Jesi. The Frasassi caves in the Fabriano area are remarkable. Further tourist information can be obtained from the Azienda Autonoma Cura Soggiorno e Turismo Riviera del Conero via Thaon de Revel n 4 tel / 33249/31828, and in the summer from the two Box Office (Ufficio Informazioni) situated at the Port (Stazione Marittima) - tel and in Piazza Roma. THE CLIMATE The climate is Mediterranean. The average monthly temperatures are at their lowest in January (1 /2 ) and peak in July/August (26 /28 ). The proximity of the sea raises humidity levels in both winter and, although to a lesser extent, in summer. For the same reason, Ancona sees medium- strength winds throughout the year with one of the strongest being the Bora, a dry and cold wind blowing in violent gusts, especially in winter. Other winds are the warm Scirocco and the Maestral, which usually bring good weather. The rainiest months are September and October. THE ECONOMY At the end of the 2nd World War, the province of Ancona was characterized by intense commercial activity in the capital city and a diffusion of agricultural activities in the hinterland. Craft activities expanded commercially, spreading throughout the region in the early fifties. This was followed by the transformation of craftsmanship into small factories, a process that distinguished the 60 s and 70 s as a period of model industrialization throughout the Marche region, and which became internationally renowned in the 2nd half of the 1970 s. More than merely developing companies the Marchigiani mode is one of territorial industrialization, while maintaining traditional agricultural links, thereby avoiding a socioeconomic backlash. Typical Industry The province of Ancona is the most industrialized area of the Marche region, faithfully representing the phenomenon of diffused industrializations with its varied articulations typical of development on the Adriatic coast. Production and manufacturing are concentrated in Fabriano (domestic electrical appliances), in Jesi (agricultural machinery) and in Castelfidardo (musical instruments) although none of these plants are large enough to dominate their sector. The metal - mechanical industry is divided into a series of products too diverse to isolate as one sector. On one hand such diversification negates internal concentration of productive districts, while on the other hand il limits the risk of a general crisis arising as the result of a collapse of any one product market

However, most public phones (Phone boxes) are operated with magnetic phone cards, which are available at Post Offices, Tobacconists, Newsagents and automatic distributors. International phone cards are also available and in some cases it is possible to use coins. Mobile phones: mobile phones are quite diffused in Italy. If you have a GSM phone it is advisable to bring it with you and just to buy a local SIM card here. Operating costs are reasonable and usually less expensive than having a phone at home (if not living here permanently) or using a phone booth. International telephone calls: To make an international call from Italy, dial: )The code for the country you are calling 2)The area code without the general prefix 0 3)The phone number To make an international call to Italy, dial: 1)The code for Italy +39 2)The area code (for Ancona is 071). 3)The phone number 9.
