Founded in the late 19th century, JW is one of the oldest and largest Texas-based law firms, offering expertise in virtually every area of law. Women practice in all areas of the firm, serving as lead counsel in litigation, transactional, and regulatory matters. Currently JW has more than 70 women attorneys. Many of JW s women attorneys have been recognized by their peers and professional organizations for their outstanding legal skills. Publications such as The National Law Journal, Texas Monthly, and Texas Lawyer have acknowledged our women attorneys as being exceptional in their practice. JW s women attorneys are also part of the firm s leadership, serving on management, compensation, and other committees. JW s values are based on this tenet: Preeminence requires diversity. Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW): JW is an active partner with this organization in,,, Fort Worth, and. JW partners have served on the Board of, on executive committees, and as President of the Fort Worth and Chapters. National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO): JW has been recognized as this group s DFW Corporate Partner of the Year. JW provides pro bono legal services for the DFW and Chapters of NAWBO and maintains a hotline to assist NAWBO members with legal questions. In addition, JW has served as a major underwriter of the annual luncheon and has supported other NAWBO educational programs and events. Women s Business Conference: JW was the driving force behind first making the Greater Chamber Annual Women s Business Conference a reality, serving as one of the initial gold sponsors and as conference chair for the first three years, co-chair in 1999 and 2000, and chair in 2005 and JW currently serves as a platinum sponsor of this event. Women s Business Council Southwest (WBC-W): JW is a sustaining member of the Women s Business Council, whose mission is to provide procurement opportunities for women-owned businesses. JW attorneys serve on the Board and Executive Committee. In addition, our women attorneys dedicate their own time and effort to serve as leaders throughout the community. JW attorneys serve in leadership positions for a number of other women s organizations including the Women s Finance Exchange, Greater Chamber, Family Place, Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, International Aviation Women s Board, Foundation for Women s Resources, Women Helping Others, the YWCA, as well as a number of other civic and charitable groups addressing issues relevant to women. JW attorneys speak regularly to organizations such as the Texas Center for Women s Business Enterprise, the SBA s Small Business Development Centers, and conferences that seek to educate women business owners. Jackson Walker attorneys are also members of Attorneys Serving the, a -based group consisting of women lawyers who raise money for worthy charities. 5 A Brand New Brand By: Kathleen LaValle Q. Why is JW 2 called a Formula with a Focus? A. Many law firms advertise having launched a women s initiative. At JW, we ve moved beyond initiatives. We re taking it to the next level, focusing on formulating strategies that work to attract, retain, develop, and promote talented women attorneys. Q. How does Jackson Walker hope to solve the JW 2 formula? A. Solving the equation means paying attention to what attracts women to our practice. It also means offering the support and advancement opportunities that will demonstrate the firm s ongoing commitment to the success of our women attorneys. We want women to know that they do not have to choose between making progress in our profession and During the 2007 JW Women s Retreat, our female attorneys and clients enjoyed a weekend of first class luxury at the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort & Spa. Relaxing activities included spa treatments, nature walks, yoga and pilates classes, and golf lessons. enjoying a balanced life style. It s not that men and women do not need to prioritize and make choices. Despite entering law school in nearly identical numbers, however, women are more likely to leave the private law practice than are men. We want to increase retention of women attorneys, for example, by promoting institutional flexibility because we know that the absence of that flexibility causes attrition at law firms today. Q. What is JW 2 s top priority? A. A primary focus will remain on advancement of women into partnership ranks. JW enjoys a high percentage of women in its summer associate and entering associate classes. Like the majority of firms our size, the census of women associates declines by the time partnership decisions are made. Our goal is to address that trend so that we maintain in our ranks the most qualified lawyers who can best serve our clients.
