11 8 OUR CENTRES PALMERSTON Park Our Palmerston Park School is located in a prime residential neighbourhood within easy reach of Dublin city centre yet close to both our host families and student accommodation. Set in its own gardens, and overlooking the beautiful Palmerston Park, it offers students the chance to study English in a peaceful and stress-free environment. The original school building is a gracious Victorian mansion and we have enriched the campus by adding a specially designed modern building with additional classrooms and a large serviced canteen. It was formerly the home of Trinity College s Irish School of Ecumenics and we are proud to continue the tradition of education on this impressive campus. Located in its own peaceful and spacious landscaped grounds, Milltown Park is situated in a vibrant and popular neighbourhood with many restaurants, cafes, boutique shops and traditional pubs. 15 12 Our Centres Marino Institute of Education Set amongst acres of landscaped gardens on the grounds of Lord Charlemont s estate, the Marino Institute of Education offers state ofthe-art facilities in a unique environment. This college campus consists of beautiful, classically designed and modern buildings, including the student residences which provide accommodation for over 300 students. Used exclusively by the Emerald Cultural Institute during the summer months, the Institute offers Teacher Training Courses accredited by Trinity College Dublin during the Academic Year. Marino Institute is conveniently located in a prime residential area within easy reach of the city centre and Dublin airport. Whether they need English for work, study or travel, our aim is to help them achieve their academic goals during their time with us. The academic staff work closely with students to develop a clear study plan based on their language level and learning objectives. Throughout the programme students progress is closely monitored by their class teachers and by the Director of Studies. Long-term students are assigned an academic mentor who arranges regular meetings to discuss all aspects of the student s study programme. 23 20 OUR PROGRAMMES INTENSIVE PLUS Courses The Intensive plus Courses are designed for students who wish to supplement their General English Course with additional classes in small groups. These courses are ideal for students who want more exposure to the English language and more time with our expert teachers. The materials for the afternoon lessons are carefully researched and specially selected for each programme. The timetable for all the Intensive Plus Courses is as follows: 20 hours of group tuition per week plus 6 hours of classes in the afternoons and Monday to Friday Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday These courses are ideal for students who want more exposure to the English language Intensive Plus Speaking Skills GEN4 Morning class size: Maximum 14, Average 9 Afternoon class size: Maximum 8 Minimum duration: 2 weeks Age: 17+ Starts: Every Monday Levels: Pre- Intermediate ( A2), Intermediate (B1), Upper Intermediate (B2) The course is designed to improve students fluency in English. It allows students to develop their language skills in the morning lessons and put these skills into practice in the afternoon group conversation classes. The smaller conversation classes help to facilitate meaningful discussion within the group. Teachers concentrate on vocabulary building and idiomatic language, leading to more natural English speech.

Topics covered include the language of meetings, negotiations and presentations, marketing, sales and advertising and techniques for telephoning and e-communication. The smaller afternoon groups facilitate interaction in realistic business scenarios. The Intensive Plus English for Academic Purposes course is designed to help students preparing to join an undergraduate or postgraduate programme in an English speaking university. Significant instruction time is dedicated to developing academic English skills. Topics covered include: participating in tutorials and seminars, academic listening and note taking, giving presentations, academic writing skills for essays and reports, examination techniques, academic reading skills and critical thinking.

25 22 OUR PROGRAMMES Examination COURSES We are specialists in preparing students for a wide range of international examinations including Cambridge ESOL examinations to IELTS, TOEIC and TOEFL, TIE, London Chamber of Commerce and the Oxford Examinations. We are a recognised centre for the TOEIC,TIE and Oxford Test of English and a recognised preparation centre for the Cambridge ESOL and IELTS examinations. Participants complete regular practice tests and are taught how to effectively approach all the sections of the test. Our Academic Team and our Director of Studies are available to assist with the application process for the IELTS Examination. Examination fees are not included* ** Immigration Regulations require all non-eu students registering for an Academic Year Programme to book and pay for a recognised English language examination. The Academic Year can be structured to suit each individual s requirements and a suitable study path is designed for the student based on the starting level, academic needs and learning objectives. All of our Academic Year and University Pathway students are monitored regularly throughout their programme by the class teachers and the Director of Studies. Academic Mentoring We also operate a personal mentoring system whereby students are assigned an academic tutor for the duration of their programme. The tutor meets the students in their first week of study in the Emerald and they subsequently have regular scheduled meetings throughout their course. A record is kept of each student s progress, and class teachers provide the mentors with an academic report on each student in advance of the meetings. The mentors, teachers and the Director of Studies are always available to assist or consult with students outside of the scheduled meetings.

29 26 OUR PROGRAMMES UNIVERSITY PATHWAY PROGRAMMES More and more international students are choosing to study in an English-speaking university or college. The Emerald Cultural Institute provides a university pathway programme for students who are planning to continue further study through English in a third level college or university. Students who do not meet the academic requirements for direct entry to undergraduate degrees should attend an International Foundation Programme. We are happy to assist students with the application procedure and we can provide referrals to our partners who offer Foundation Programmes. Our University Pathway Service includes: Advice and assistance from our Academic Team in deciding on your course or university selection. Identifying the specific requirements and English language score needed for your chosen course and advice on the most suitable examination (IELTS, TOEFL or Oxford Test of English) to take. Assistance in completing college applications and submission of all the required documentation in the specified time frames. Organising conditional Letters of Offer from our partner Universities or Colleges. Regular contact and follow-up on your application with the International Office of the chosen University. Seminars with our third-level partners Our Academic Year and University Pathway Programmes are designed for students of all levels who: Plan to enter university or college at undergraduate or postgraduate level. Need to prepare for IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge ESOL Examinations, Oxford Test of English, or other university entrance examinations. Want to prepare for their experience in an English-speaking university by improving their skills and techniques in our English for Academic Purposes Module. Want to succeed in the university classroom with native English speakers. Need English for their major or whose university programme will be through English.

This intensive small-group course is designed for participants from professional backgrounds who require knowledge of English for their work and who wish to increase their language and communication skills. The content of the course includes simulated discussions and business meetings, telephone conversations, negotiations, report writing, problem solving and role plays.

32 29 Intensive Combined Course SPC3 20 hours group tuition per week + 10 hours of individual tuition and and Monday to Friday Class size: Maximum 14, Average 9 Minimum duration: 1 week Age: 21+ Starts: Every Monday Level: *Beginner to Advanced (*Fixed dates for Beginners) Professional Development Programmes SPC4 This tailor-made programme is available for groups only and offers participants a combination of General English tuition with training for their specific profession in the afternoons. Our full-time staff is complemented by experts from the professional Irish scene who are invited to lecture in the institute. We can organise visits to Irish companies involved in the field. The professions for which this course is available include: Law, Medicine, Information Technology, Engineering, Banking, Finance, Journalism, Management, Aviation, Green Economy, Military and Tourism. The timetable and content of the course are designed to match clients needs and programmes are tailor-made to meet the group s exact requirements. This course offers a combination of group and individual classes and makes full use of the limited time available during a short stay. Clients have the benefit of studying in general international group classes in the morning and can use their individual hours of tuition to concentrate on specific areas of interest.

33 30 OUR PROGRAMMES INTERNSHIP PROGRAMMES The Internship programme guarantees an initial study period at the Emerald Cultural Institute followed by an unpaid placement in a company, allowing the student to gain excellent experience not only in a chosen field but also of working in an Englishspeaking environment. Minimum duration: 4 weeks language course and 6 weeks internship Age: 18+ The Emerald Cultural Institute cooperates with our partner organisations who are specialised in the area of recruitment to find internship placements. We provide course participants with a range of internship possibilities including placements in the following sectors: Financial Services, IT, Marketing, Hospitality, Food, Travel, Fashion, Retail, Media, Arts, PR, Advertising, Event Planning, Politics, Law and NGO s. Eight weeks notice required prior to start of internship Company will decide on the work schedule Availability of placements may vary according to the sector This course combines a minimum of four weeks language study with between six weeks and six months of hands-on working experience. Our internship is an ideal option for students studying with us for an academic year who want to improve future career prospects by gaining valuable experience to include on a CV.

35 32 OUR PROGRAMMES COURSES FOR TEACHERS These courses have been specifically designed for non-native teachers of English at primary and secondary-school level or for teachers who would like to use CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning). The courses were developed within the Comenius/Grundtvig framework and previous participants have obtained E.U. funding for our teachers programmes. Courses for Non-Native Teachers of English SPC5/SPC6/SPC7/SPC8 25 hours per week including lessons, seminars and cultural activities and Monday to Friday An afternoon programme of seminars and cultural excursions Class size: Maximum 15 (e-learning class size 10) Duration: 2 weeks Our Training Options We offer several different course formats: Two-week traditional face-to-face courses in our Dublin training centres. One, two or three-day intensive face-toface courses at our clients home location (for groups). Online courses which can be as short as a few weeks to as long as an academic year. Blended courses (a mix of face-to-face and online training) Training Areas We offer training in four key areas: English Language Development plus Teaching Methodology for Primary or Secondary-School teachers of English Language Development for English- Language and CLIL Teachers Introduction to CLIL for Secondary School Teachers Introduction to Online Technologies for Secondary School Teachers For qualified non-native teachers of English Starts: On Fixed Dates

36 33 Primary School Teachers SPC5 Classes and modules focusing on the teaching of English in the Primary classroom, and on the needs of young learners. The main focus is on practical ideas and materials development. Modules include: Songs and Games in the Classroom; Drama and Role Play for Young Learners; Tasks and Activities for Language Learning; Developing Listening and Speaking Skills. Practical workshops focus on helping participants to devise materials and lessons for their own teaching situations. Pre-Primary modules available on request. Non-Native Secondary School Teachers of English SPC6 This course focuses on the teaching of English in the secondary school classroom. Learning theories and their application are discussed. Practical modules include: Learner Strategies, Teaching the Four Skills; Use of Authentic Materials; Tasks and Activities in Language Learning; Drama in the Language Classroom; Internet Resources and Language Teaching. Special options in Literature and Cultural Awareness are also available. Participants are given the opportunity to improve their confidence and competence in English by means of language-development classes. A minimum language level of Upper Intermediate (B2) is required for this programme. Introduction to CLIL for Secondary Teachers SPC7 This course offers an introduction to what CLIL is, how it is used and how content teachers can apply it in their own teaching situations. This introductory programme is for teachers at secondary level who teach subjects through English, or who might do so in the future and includes languagedevelopment lessons specially designed for teacher-training groups and modules on key CLIL methodology. A minimum language level of B2 is required for this programme. Online Technologies for Education SPC8 Using technology in the classroom is becoming an important skill for all teachers. This course is for secondary level teachers who are already intermediate level users of computers and who would like to learn about online technologies to support their classes. At the end of the course, participants will have built their own teaching website or class blog which will be ready to use in their own teaching situations. A minimum language level of Upper Intermediate (B2) is required for this programme. These courses are for teachers who teach English and for teachers who teach through English

39 36 EMERALD SERVICES At the Emerald Cultural Institute every aspect of a student s study abroad experience is important to us and our staff work to ensure that our services meet the highest quality standards. Personal attention to the individual needs and cultural backgrounds of all our students is at the centre of the Emerald Experience. Students who book our transfer service are met by our friendly and professional drivers at the meeting point at the airport. Students receive a warm welcome from the moment they arrive at their study centre and all our staff help students to feel at home. Students can enjoy their breaks and mealtimes in our campus restaurants. Coffee, pastries and a selection of freshly prepared hot and cold meals are served daily. The service provided by our administration and accommodation teams starts from the moment we receive the booking. All students requests and individual needs are taken into account when confirming your course and accommodation. Our friendly team are always available to liaise with you during your programme. Our Student Welfare Officers look after all our students social and personal needs and they are also responsible for the organisation of the Social and Cultural Programme.

41 38 GENERAL INFORMATION VISA and Immigration Guidelines All non-eu students should contact their nearest Embassy or Consulate to check if they require a visa to study in Ireland or refer to the Department of Justice website for full details of the online application procedure. It is the responsibility of enrolling students to provide documentation in accordance with the appropriate visa procedures as advised by the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service ( and/or the appropriate Irish embassy or consulate. It is a requirement for all non-eea and non-eu students who intend staying for more than 90 days to register with the Garda National Immigration Bureau. Registration needs to be completed within 30 days of arrival to Ireland. The Student Welfare Officer will assist the student with the required documentation and procedures. Students staying for more than 90 days must pay a deposit to the school for a recognised English examination to be taken before the end of their course. they are required to have adequate medical insurance valid for their entire stay in Ireland. The policy should be submitted in English or accompanied by an English translation. Personal Insurance Students are not insured by the school or by the host family against illness, theft or loss of personal effects and the school accepts no responsibility in the event of such occurrences. Personal insurance cover is therefore recommended. School Holidays In the case of public holidays which occur on a Monday students may begin their course on the Tuesday of that week. Public Holidays are non-refundable. Terms and Conditions For a full list of our terms and conditions please refer to our Price List. Medical and Travel Insurance All students studying in Ireland must obtain appropriate medical insurance in their own country before departure and students are also advised to take out travel insurance to cover accident or loss of baggage. Medical Insurance can be arranged for non-eu students by the Institute on request. Students travelling to Ireland from EU countries must bring their European Health Insurance Card with them. Non-EU students who require a visa to study in Ireland will need to submit full details of their medical insurance policy to the Immigration Bureau when submitting their application and
