1 POSITION DESCRIPTION HASTINGS PUBLIC SCHOOLS SECTION I: GENERAL INFORMATION Position Title: Lead Computer Technician Immediate Supervisor s Position Title: Network Administrator Job Summary: Department: Information Technology FLSA Status: Non-Eempt Bargaining Unit: Individual Contract Under the direction of the Network Administrator, the Lead Computer Technician is responsible for coordinating the staff and operations of the unit involved in the testing, installing, troubleshooting and maintenance of computer hardware, peripherals and software through the district. The Lead Computer Technician provides software technical support and training in district-wide applications (e.g. student accounting, point of sale software, and office productivity software); coordinates large scale district technology projects and represents the district in monitoring contracted technology services in areas of responsibility. SECTION II: ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Leads, guides and assigns duties and responsibilities to district computer technicians. Coordinates the staff development, training and orientation of staff. Maintains and manages all technology hardware and software assets of the district. Manages and coordinates technology projects and assists in technology planning in the district. a) Advises and consults with district personnel concerning new technologies. b) Represents the district in dealings with vendors, technology groups or service providers. c) Tests the compatibility and interoperability of new hardware and software with current systems. Troubleshoots and provides technology support to district personnel in various TIES applications and programs. Trains district employees in the use of hardware and software supported by the district. Provides cost-effective technology solutions to customer needs. Consults with, advises, supports and assists staff in data driven support decision making through eperience and knowledge in database development. Backs up and supports the Network Administrator in their absence. Performs other duties of a comparable level or type, as required. a) Attends training seminars, conferences, workshops to keep informed of developments, trends and changes in technology. b) Participates and serves on various committees, as delegated. SECTION III: WORK REQUIREMENTS AND CHARACTERISTICS Page 1

2 EDUCATION/KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENT: Minimum education required to perform adequately in position could reasonably be attained only by completing the following: REQUIRED EDUCATION/TRAINING (choose one) less than high school diploma High school diploma or GED. 1 year college 2 years college 3 years college 4 years college DEGREE INFORMATION: Type of degree: (B.S., M.A., etc.) Associate s Degree or Vocational training Major field of study or degree emphasis: Computer Science, Information Technology, Management Information or related area. 1st year graduate level Essential knowledge and specialized subject knowledge required to perform the essential functions of the job: 2nd year graduate level Fundamentals of project management in information technology. Knowledge of the application and use of computers, business productivity software/applications such as Word, Ecel, programs and other office productivity software or specialized software/applications utilized by the District. Knowledge of diagnostic and troubleshooting techniques in the servicing and repair of computers, laptops, PDA s and peripherals. Knowledge of various operating systems utilized by the district. Fundamentals of computer networking functions, components, and connectivity issues and procedures. Knowledge of electrical equipment used to support computers, peripherals, hardware. District administrative procedures and policies (e.g. purchasing, contracting, HR, etc.). Required Work Eperience in Addition to Formal Education/Training: Minimum of 3 years eperience in computer information technology. LICENSE/ CERTIFICATION Identify licenses/certification required: Requires a valid driver s in the State of MN. A+ Network Certification. Page 2

3 ESSENTIAL SKILLS REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE WORK Skilled in: Operation, installation, repair and maintenance of computers, peripherals, and audiovisual equipment. Troubleshooting, testing and diagnosing computer and network connectivity problems and issues. Ability to recognize and install all necessary electrical components for computers, peripherals, and other equipment. Providing high level technical support and assistance to district personnel in resolving computer, application, and/or connectivity problems or issues. Trains staff in the use and operation of applications and computers. Coordinates district technology projects. Coordinating, leading, assigning and monitoring the work activities of other computer technicians. Provides research, assistance and testing of new software and hardware. Implementing documentation requirements set forth by the department. Planning, prioritizing, and organizing tasks and functions. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with clients/users. Ability to communicate effectively with users at all levels of technology. The potential for electrical shock can eist when working with electrical and electronic components (occasionally at heights or systems tunnels with the potential for asbestos) but the risk of environmental and physical hazards and risks can be characterized as minimal given the training, application of safety precautions and procedures.
