I was down match points and it was such a struggle for me and I didn't know if I was really going to pull that out or if I was going to win, said Capriati. I just kept going, point by point, and things turned around. The match, played in heat nearing 100 degrees, featured long rallies, 15 breaks of serve, two bathroom breaks, a 10-minute rest after the second set and several displays of anger. After losing the first set 4-6, Capriati fell behind 0-4 Photo by Allsport Jennifer Capriati kisses her second Australian Open title. Although Hingis and Kournikova took the first set with little trouble, the second set was a whole different story. Hantuchova, playing with Sanchez-Vicario for the first time, closed the first game with an ace. Hingis then broke Sanchez-Vicario in the third game of the set but Kournikova was broken on her serve and the set was leveled at 2-2. The score stayed close and went to a tie-break, Sanchez-Vicario and Hantuchova winning 7-4. 2 Capriati (Continued from page 1) but then saved three match points at 3-5 and 5-6 to force a tie-breaker. She then saved a fourth one at 6-7 during the tie-break and finally claimed the set when Hingis returned a wide backhand. Both players suffering from the unbearable heat conditions, agreed to take a 10-minute break before starting the third set. Hingis grabbed a 2-1 lead in the third. Capriati, confident from her second set comeback, won the next two games and cruised to victory in 31 minutes. "I felt like my head was all over the place, but after I lost the second set, she had the momentum, said Hingis. I didn't really believe in it anymore, even when I was up 2-1 (with a break in the third set). For Hingis who has now lost four consecutive Australian Open finals, that loss was even more disappointing as she failed to capitalize on all of her four match points. Despite losing after being so close to winning a Grand Slam title in three years, Hingis was satisfied with her performance. I exceeded my expectations at this tournament, she said. I think I proved myself again that I can play really good tennis and I can have the chance to beat anybody out there, so I've got to keep my head up and go for it. " Sometimes it takes a little longer," she said. "You can't expect everything happening right away. It is not like you snap your fingers and you are going to win a Grand Slam. So I think I have to work even harder now and just continue what I've been doing." Capriati is the only woman to have saved four match points to win a Grand Slam title. I don't know which one was better for me, winning last year or winning this year, she said. "I don't know how I won today." Jennifer Capriati after saving four match points Photo by Allsport The winner and the finalist on the podium after battling it out for over two hours. Hingis/Kournikova (Continued from page 1) The underdogs still appeared to have the momentum in the third when Sanchez-Vicario broke Hingis to lead 1-0. But the 1999 Australian Open champions stepped up their game and dominated the set to take the match 6-1. I think, in general, we looked like we were the better team all the time, said Hingis. We were always up and running and we just couldn t close it out. When asked whether they would play together for the rest of the year, Hingis replied: Definitely we ll try, if we both stay healthy. Hantuchova s performance in singles and doubles earned her a lot of new fans as well as praise from her fellow players. She is definitely a prodigy, Hingis said on the Slovak, citing lack of experience for the loss of the match. She has a great future ahead of her, if she takes advantage of it." Photo by Allsport Winners and finalists pose with their trophies and kangaroos. Sanchez-Vicario also saved good words for her partner after the match. She said that while she herself may have a few Grand Slam finals left, Hantuchova still has many more to come. Hantuchova said she was honored to play with Arantxa who won 14 Grand Slam titles: four singles, six doubles and four mixed doubles. There are so many things I can learn from her, she said. Page 2

Hantuchova wins mixed doubles title with Kevin Ullyett Melbourne Park, Australia Daniela Hantuchova won her second mixed doubles Grand Slam title with partner Kevin Ullyett from South Africa, defeating the Argentine pair of Paola Suarez and Gaston Eltis 6-3, 6-2. Hantuchova is now 10-0 in mixed doubles matches having won Wimbledon in 2001 with Leos Friedl. This is beyond my expectations. I've been in two mixed doubles championships and I haven't lost yet," Hantuchova said. Hantuchova also reached the doubles final with partner Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario losing to Martina Hingis and Anna Kournikova. Photo by Allsport Daniela Hantuchova and partner Kevin Ullyett in action during the mixed doubles final. "I'm really happy that we won today because I was in the doubles final and I really wanted to take home one title, and one more (toy) kangaroo, said the champion. "It was excellent the way we played today, we were really aggressive." Australian Open Top 10 picks Jennifer Capriati s thrilling victory over Martina Hingis was picked as the best match of the 2002 Australian Open by the Australian Open official website. This thrilling three-set match, disputed in unbearable conditions, brought women s tennis to the front of sports pages and telecasts around the world. Sports writers were captivated by the drama of the two-hour plus final and many of their descriptions can be found on websites ( Perhaps Pam Shriver summed it up best in her column for espn.com: I've never seen a match with so much drama and emotion. Emotional matches at lesser tournaments are great to watch, but when you get a match like that at a major, one of the four crown jewels of the sport, it's just so much more meaningful and historic. Following are the other women matches that were chosen among the Top 10 picks: No. 10 No. 5 No. 3 No. 1 Venus Williams d. Daniela Hantuchova 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 third-round Monica Seles d. Venus Williams 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-3 uarterfinal Martina Hingis d. Monica Seles 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 Semifinal Jennifer Capriati d. Martina Hingis 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-2 Final Page 3

BETWEEN THE LINES If I would just do one thing in my life I would be terribly bored. So I've got to do what makes me happy, and playing the amounts of tournaments that I've played so far has made me happy, and for me that's what's best. Venus Williams on her schedule Last night was the first time I really had a dream about it. I knew it was this year because it had the Kia signs on the thing. Jennifer Capriati on the specifics of her dream about the Australian Open on the eve of her first match as a defending champion I think if I played with him one time, he'd change his mind. Martina Hingis dismissing Marcelo Rios suggestion that women s tennis was a joke I'm good in the top 10. That's my place over there, and I'm not afraid about this. Justine Henin I was 14 at the time, and Martina was 10. Before that match I was thinking I can t lose to a 10-year-old, but I did! Adriana Serra-Zanetti on the last time she played Hingis But it was kind of nice to see somebody shorter on the other side, that's for sure. Martina Hingis on playing Adriana Serra-Zanetti I felt like one of their own a little bit, Australian." Jennifer Capriati on the incredible crowd support For me to have one of those little plaques on the columns as you walk in, will be pretty cool." Pam Shriver on being inducted into the Hall of Fame Tennis is a real reality for me, but to have a degree is like a dream come true. Venus Williams on her studies. If you're not wearing the right thing, it can be detrimental. That's how I feel. And if you aren't looking your best, you surely won't play your best...so I just wish everyone luck when they put on their uniforms. Venus Williams on the importance of fashion and on-court presentation It's not about something you don't do right. It's just maybe give more, be more intense in what you do, and have more determination in what you do. Amelie Mauresmo on her decision to rededicate herself to the sport and to become the No. 1 player. In my house, when I walk in the front door, I keep the replica cup right there with the stuffed kangaroo where I can see it, and same with the French too. So, it's like every time I walk in I just look at it and it reminds me of it. Jennifer Capriati on whether she has any keepsakes from last year s win. "I want to start to beat the top players. I want to try and break into the top 10." Daniela Hantuchova Maybe when I was 3 years old. Martina Hingis when asked whether she has ever missed an overhead. Obviously, I do learn a lot from her. She's a great champion and it's just really great and nice that we get along so well and that we make such a good team." Anna Kournikova about Martina Hingis and their successful partnership on the court. Page 4

ACES CORNER Comeback queen Jennifer Capriati proved once again that she was the comeback queen. Led 4-6, 0-4 and down four match points, the No. 1 player in the world defied the scorching heat and showed incredible mental strength as she battled her way towards victory. "The whole time, even though I was coming from behind, I thought I could still win this," Jennifer recalled. "I never really thought of myself as being defeated out there." With this second Australian Open title comes yet another feat: She is the only woman to have saved four match points to win a Grand Slam title. Last year she was the lowest seeded player to win a Grand Slam title in the professional era. Photo by Allsport Milestones Clijsters passes the 200 milestone With her first-round win over Australian Christina Wheeler, Kim Clijsters registered her 200 career-singles match win milestone. To-date the 18 year-old has a match win-loss record. She also becomes the first woman from Belgium to reach the semifinals of the Australian Open. With her reaching the final at the French Open and Justine Henin finalist at Wimbledon, the two talented teenagers continue to do wonders for their little country representing it in Grand Slam finals twice out of four times. Hingis passes prize money milestone Despite being one match short of a fourth Australian Open title, Martina Hingis has done well enough in Melbourne to surpass the US$17 million mark in career prize money. She is now the third on the women s all-time list behind Steffi Graf ($21,895,277) and Martina Navratilova ($20,475,735). Hingis came into the tournament with US$16,944,441 and left with 17,305,731 Shriver to enter Hall of Fame Jennifer Capriati celebrates after her winning her second trophy. American Pam Shriver (soon to marry Australian actor George Lazenby) will be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame this coming July, along with former men s No.1 Mats Wilander (SWE). In her 20-year career, Shriver won 21 singles titles and 106 doubles titles, including an amazing 21 Grand Slam women s doubles titles, 20 of those with Martina Navratilova, possibly the most formidable women s team ever. Shriver reached a career best singles ranking of No.3 and No.1 in doubles. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, Shriver won a gold medal with Zina Garrison, and was a member of the victorious United States Fed Cup teams in 1986 and My induction is obviously very heavily weighted towards doubles and one particular partnership. In fact I tried to call Martina in the last couple of days, I wanted to leave a message and just tell her 'thanks, because without you I wouldn t think I'd be on this conference call," said Shriver. Page 5

New Diva Photo by Allsport Daniela Hantuchova s performance at the Australian Open won her a legion of fans and a second Grand Slam title. Although Daniela Hantuchova lost to Venus Williams in the third round, she can be proud of having taken the double Grand Slam champion to a thrilling third set, the only Top five seeded player that seemed to owe her some extra time on court. With the exception of Venus Williams at Wimbledon in 2001, all of her Top five seeded opponents had to go through three sets before claiming victory over the unrelenting Slovak. And the pattern seems to repeat itself this year as it made its 2002 debut in Sydney with No. 2 seed Justine Henin going through a 1-6, 6-0, 6-3 second round victory over the Slovak before moving on to the semifinals. Winning those are definitely some of the sweetest moments in your career, said Williams following her tight three-sets victory over Hantuchova at the Australian Open. The young Slovak did not leave Melbourne empty-handed. She won the mixed doubles championship with partner Kevin Ullyett, adding another Grand Slam mixed doubles trophy (She won the 2001 Wimbledon Mixed Doubles Championship with Leos Friedl) and reached the women s doubles final with partner Arantxa Sa n- chez-vicario. First Timers Anabel Medina Garrigues and Martina Sucha reached the fourth round at a Grand Slam for the first time in their young careers. Medina Garrigues did not have much time to savor her accomplishment as she tore her anterior cruciate ligament during her fourth round match against Monica Seles, retiring after trailing 2-4 in the first set. With Rita Grande bowing out in grace in the fourth round, Adriana Serra-Zanetti carried on the Italian flag to the Australian Open quarterfinals. It was the first Grand Slam quarterfinal for the 24 year old whose best result was a fourth-round reach at the 1995 French Open. It is also the second time an Italian woman tasted that level of Grand Slam success following Francesca Schiavone s run at the French Open. I never, never could imagine that I would play a quarterfinal at a Grand Slam. Serra-Zanetti broke into the Top 50 for the first time reaching a career-high of 47. Australian Cindy Watson certainly knew how to take advantage of a wild card, reaching the third round for her second main draw appearance at the Australian Open. With the exception of her home Grand Slam, Watson has never played before in the main draw of a Sanex WTA Tour event, failing to qualify for Hobart (1999, 2000 and 2001), Gold Coast (1999), the US Open and Wimbledon (1999). Photo by Allsport Following her first Grand Slam quarterfinal, Adriana Serra-Zanetti reached a career-high ranking of 47 breaking into the Top 50 for the first time. Page 6

COURTSIDE NEWS Anna visits Melbourne Park Zoo Anna Kournikova took advantage of a day-off from doubles competition to visit Australia s wildlife at Melbourne Park Zoo. Dressed in a pair of jeans and a striped tank top, Anna strolled casually through the zoo with her mother Alla. She couldn t resist the appealing sweetness of Australia s beloved animals, feeding kangaroos, cuddling koalas and even braving an enclosure to blow kisses to a couple of curious giraffes. Above right: Anna Kournikova cuddling a young kangaroo Below left: Anna Kournikova blowing kisses to a couple of giraffes Molik inaugurates official retail store Alicia Molik inaugurated the Australian Open retail shop. The No. 1 Australian tennis player chatted happily with fans and signed autographs before cruising through the store to check out the merchandise. Alicia s inaugural blessings seemed to bring good luck to the year-round store that scored big with the public. Herds of local and international visitors flocked into the shop buying all sorts of officially licensed products. Some of the international visitors have stocked so much on Oz Open paraphernalia that they could have filled a supermarket trolley! exclaimed a staff member. The big hit? The ceramic line sold out in the first week. Alicia Molik cuts the ribbon during the official store inauguration. Special Olympics Clinic Russia s No. 1 player Elena Dementieva, Rita Grande, who inflicted a fourth round scare on Venus Williams, and doubles specialist Nicole Arendt braved a cold rainy weather to share their tennis knowledge and passion with children from the Special Olympics. The players were quite surprised by the quality of play displayed by the group, often having to stretch or run to return a ball. Tennis stars light up hospital Barbara Schett and ATP player Michael Llodra visited the Melbourne Children s hospital with the Charity Starlight Foundation. The children were very excited at the sight of the young stars and the ambiance was rocking. With captain Starlight heading the animation, the hospital wing was transformed first into a mini tennis court and then into a dance floor. After hitting some balls with the kids, Barbara and Michael embarked in the ambiance singing and dancing on a small stage, with Barbara leading the Macarena dance. The players then sat down with the children for a chat and a well-deserved rest and signed autographs. Above right: Barbara Schett and Michael Llodra leading the kids with the Macarena.
