6 Welcome to the an annual celebration of the art and entertainment of film in all its forms! By CHRISTINE BROUSSARD Excitement is building for the 2015 Nacogdoches Film Festival as coordinators round out panels and guest appearances before theater lights dim and projectors flicker on. Scheduled for the last week in February, organizers have brought big changes and even bigger names to the event now in its fourth year. "We have added additional panels that deal with producing, writing for the screen and making a film in Nacogdoches," said Ron Johnson, film WHO WE ARE The Nacogdoches Film Festival operates in Nacogdoches, Texas an East Texas college community known for its arts focus and easy access to area attractions, trails, restaurants, shopping and scenic byways. 6

7 festival committee chair. "They will run on Saturday afternoon." Firsts at the fest Directors, producers, novelists and big wigs from various genres will attend, including director Jim Mickle. He will accompany Nacogdoches native and noted author Joe Lansdale in another Q-and-A following the screening of "Cold in July" a book-to-film adaptation of one of Lansdale's novels. Another festival first this year is the use of Nacogdoches full-screen theaters, including the Carmike and SFA Movie Theater. Kids and filmmaking A first for the Nacogdoches Film Festival is a filmmaking workshop for children slated for Saturday morning. "Many of us enjoy reading books and watching movies," said Bruce Partain, CEO and president of the Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce. "It is wonderful to be part of an enthusiastic audience, but it is also great to be an active participant, especially when you are young. So, don't just read books write them. Don't just watch films make them." "Visual storytelling is a learned skill that makes use of angles, framing, point of view, shot selection and editing," Partain said. Professionals leading the workshop include Dr. Casey Hart, SFA professor who teaches broadcast video techniques. He and Dr. Linda Bond are both faculty of the SFA Department of Mass Communication, which is hosting the workshop, added Partain. 8 By CHRISTINE BROUSSARD Stricken by cancer, Texas musician and Grammy award-winning producer Stephen Bruton s 2009 death at just 60 years old served as the impetus for a film that chronicles the rise of Austin as a music mecca. The film Road to Austin written, directed and produced by Gary Fortin of the FORMAX Group will be one of several films screened during the 2015 Nacogdoches Film Festival in March. This film it s a documentary of how Austin, Texas, became the live music capital of the world, Fortin said. It starts from the 1800s and takes you to the present, then it 8 morphs into the 2007 concert that was also called Road to Austin. Bruton was right-hand man to and lead guitarist for Kris Kristofferson a singer, songwriter, musician and actor known for hits Me and Bobby McGee and For the Good Times, among others. Kris is also a dear friend of mine and Stephen was my business partner, Fortin said. Kris and I decided

9 to do the film about four years ago in order to memorialize Stephen Bruton. The 2007 Road to Austin concert was one Fortin said he produced and was Bruton s last major performance. Road to Austin was unveiled to an audience of 20,000 people in Austin, Texas, the Road to Austin film website states. The lineup was developed to include multiple genres of music, including poetry and opera. The production attempted to blend and blur this artistic diversity in order to deliver many never-seen-before collaborations. Celebrity headliners included Kristofferson, Bonnie Raitt, Delbert McClinton, Joe Ely, Ian McLagan, Eric Johnson, Bobby Whitlock and CoCo Carmel. Those headliners heightened the impact of the evenings apex and afforded Austin s local artists an opportunity to have these legends accompany Road to Austin» 12 Gary Fortin Writer/Director Gary Fortin is a 30-year veteran in the world of visual arts. He is a writer, director, producer, executive producer, and cameraman all with equal veteran prowess. 11 Film Synopsis Road To Austin chronicles how Austin, Texas became the Live Music Capital of the World, dating from 1835 to present. The film highlights 1800s Austin, the psychedelic movement, Armadillo World Headquarters, and numerous iconic musical inflection points that shaped the American musical culture of today. Vintage photos, posters, and footage are presented to a soundtrack that truly inspires! The film story line weaves towards an all-star live performance featuring Kris Kristofferson, Bonnie Raitt, Delbert McClinton, Eric Johnson, Ian McLagan, Joe Ely, and 40 other Artists led by Musical Director, Stephen Bruton. This event was designed to create and capture a heightened level of excitement towards understanding how and why Austin, Texas, has become known as the live music capital of the world. The Road to Austin film debuted in March 2014 at Austin music festival South by Southwest. Though the full length film version runs three hours and 40 minutes, Nacogdoches Film Festival will screen a 75-minute festival cut, Fortin said. It was released on DVD and Blue Ray in December. It s been received amazingly all over the world, Fortin said, adding that 100 percent of the film s profits go toward creation of the Stephen Bruton memorial Artist Wellness Program and delivering awareness towards bolstering the quality of health and wellness to the artist community, the website states. The artist wellness program is based on what we called biomarker testing, Fortin said. Stephen died of cancer so... the short of it is the artist wellness program is designed for early detection of life threatening diseases. Fortin has been in the visual art community for about 35 years, he said. He began as a professional fashion photographer, living for several years in Europe before moving to Austin in He is also executive producer, creative director and principal in the Formax Group and will attend the 2015 Nacogdoches Film Festival. 15 Emmy-winning producer excited to bring film to Nacogdoches By PAUL BRYANT The former producer of CBS 48 Hours and native Texan Jenna Jackson is scheduled to attend the Nacogdoches Film Festival on Feb. 27 for a showing of her 2014 documentary Tomato Republic. It s about a mayor s race in Jacksonville, she said. One of my friends, Whitney Graham Carter, called me one day and said, You need to come back and film this mayor s race. I thought she was crazy, at first. But Carter was on to something. She told me that a variety of people were running for mayor, and that this was a great way to really capture our small town and these great people, Jackson said. And that s what they did. I took my team down for the weekend and we were all hooked. We filmed for three months, and then we premiered last spring at the Dallas International Film Festival, which is great because it s near East Texas. We had a great East Texas crowd there. Jackson s company, P+R Productions of Houston, has since screened the film We were so excited when we got connected with Nacogdoches. It is the heart of East Texas, and that is where we want the film to be showing. Any time an East Texas crowd sees it, they love it. The charm of small towns is everywhere, but East Texas is special. 16 Tomato Republic» From 15 I was there for 15 years, she said. I went right after college, and it was a big shock to my system. I thought that was a big leap, going from Huntsville to New York City. But it was an exciting time in my career. Jackson eventually became a producer for the long-running series 48 Hours, for which she won an Emmy, and was a producer for Katie Couric. I started by getting coffee and did whatever I could to work my way up to producing. For 48 Hours, I handled most of their Texas crime stories. That included fascinating encounters with suspects, police officers Film Synopsis A flamboyant restaurateur, a good ol boy and a political ingénue, walk into a small town political contest and compete head to head... to head, for a non-paid mayoral seat of the Tomato Republic. What happens next is anyone s guess. The only thing that could slow this race down is a freight train. Let the takeover begin. Carmike is scheduled to show the film at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27. and attorneys across the country. But in 2012, Jackson created P+R Productions, and Tomato Republic was one of its first projects. When Jeff Zucker left to take over CNN, I started my own company, Jackson said. On the firm s website, she credits Dan Rather with helping her become a real journalist after meeting him at Sam Houston. (He) hired her shortly after graduation. She packed a suitcase and moved to New York, where she began working for CBS News/48 Hours. She learned myriad lessons about the news, people and life. Jenna s passion has always been telling real stories about real people and she started P+R Productions to do just that. And that s what Tomato Republic is about. These characters in the film, you literally 16

17 can t make up, Jackson said. I think Texas has some great stories with great characters. P+R Productions on its website describes the spirit and intent of Tomato Republic. When we heard through the East Texas grapevine that there were three challenges for the normally uncontested mayoral race... and that all three candidates were interesting and diverse individuals, we ran to get there with cameras. We set out to share a oncein-a-lifetime, up-close-and-personal look at small-town politics. What unfolds is the story of small-town America. Incumbent Mayor Kenneth Melvin defeated Rob Gowin in a runoff. The other challenger was William Igbokwe. Melvin died in December. Carmike is scheduled to show the film at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27. My two fellow producers, Anthony Jackson, who is my brother, and Whitney and several cast members will be there, Jackson said. Rob one of the candidates for mayor is going, along with Cherokee County Judge Chris Davis and Kurt Sadler, Rob s cousin. Beyond the Nacogdoches screening, no others are scheduled for Tomato Republic this year. But Jackson said she is considering one for Washington. Jenna Jackson Director/Producer Jenna grew up in teensy Jacksonville, Texas. She went to college at Sam Houston State University and there she met her mentor and friend, Dan Rather. He grew her into a real journalist and a more courageous individual and hired her shortly after graduation. Jenna s passion has always been telling real stories about real people and she started P+R Productions to do just that. With a team like this one, the stories whether on television or the big screen will be beautiful, captivating and one of a kind. She lives in Houston with her twin boys (Parker and Rees, the original P and R) and her husband, who is totally supportive of her craziness. Jenna won the News & Documentary Emmy Award, Outstanding Continuing Coverage of a News Story in a News Magazine in 2012, for her work as Producer on CBS News 48 Hours broadcast Grave Injustice, which told the story of a Texas man who was wrongfully convicted based on flawed evidence for brutally murdering a family. 17

19 George R.R. Martin BRINGS GAME OF thrones to festival By CHRISTINE BROUSSARD Any fan of George R.R. Martin knows the longtime science fiction author turned screenwriter knows all too well how to keep an audience on the edge of its seat. Killing off many of his fan s favorite characters in the Game of Thrones (GoT) book series, and now in the HBO television adaptation, has created an uproar among diehard devotees. Even so, Martin s fan base has exploded since his Game of Thrones books came to life on the small screen. And soon, Nacogdoches residents will have the opportunity to listen to Martin as he shares insight into the writing process and the growth of a fantasy empire during the 2015 Nacogdoches Film Festival in March. The annual film festival is now in its fourth year. Martin recently spoke with The Daily Sentinel about his success and some of his history. It s been a wild ride, Martin said over the phone from his office in Santa Fe. I never could have anticipated the success of Game of Thrones. You always hope the show will be successful, but to be successful on this level is just amazing. Martin s presence at the Nacogdoches Film Festival is directly due to his friendship with Nacogdoches native and fellow author, Joe Lansdale. The two became acquainted from the science fiction world conventions and things like that, Martin said. I first came to a Texas science fiction conviction in 1973, so I know quite a few of the Texas writers past and present of science fiction and fantasy and horror. Martin has jumped between writing mediums during his Road to Austin» 20 19

20 George R.R. Martin» From 19 career, getting a job as a screenwriter for the 1980s Twilight Zone remake and later as a writer for the threeseason show, Beauty and the Beast. Admittedly, Martin said, he has always enjoyed writing books the most. Prose will always remain my first love, he said. I sold my first story in 1971 and published my first novel in 1977, and I loved television, I loved motion pictures, but I never really thought I would write for them. A book called The Armageddon Rag Martin s fourth novel had been well reviewed but sold very poorly. It was around that time Martin was invited to contribute a script to Twilight Zone. Of course in book publishing, you are only as successful as your last project, Martin said. With that commercial failure on my record, I was having a lot of difficulty selling George R.R. SOLD OUT Game of Thrones episodes Blackwater and The Lion and the Rose will be screened in the SFA Movie Theater in the Baker Pattillo Student Center beginning at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28. my next book, and I had a mortgage that needed to be paid. So when the Hollywood thing came along, I jumped at it. Out of Game of Thrones four complete seasons, Martin has written screenplays for four episodes. He will show two of those at the film festival Blackwater and The Lion and the Rose offering background and personal anecdotes for each. He also looks forward to meeting fans both at the screening and Hastings book signing. The fans are great, Martin said, and I m a fan myself. I started out reading stuff by other people before I wrote it and it was always a thrill to me back in 1970s and 80s when I went to conventions and met some of the guys I d been reading for a long time. So I try to remember that. Martin was nominated for a Writers Guild Award in 1987 for one of his Twilight Zone scripts. It was announced in December 2014 that Game of Thrones received two Writers Guild of America nominations. 20

23 Unique, talented panelists expected to appear at film festival By PAUL BRYANT Nine panelists are scheduled to attend the Nacogdoches Film Festival for a forum on entertainment law and filmmaking on Feb. 26. All of these people have contributed dramatically to the film business in one way or another, Nacogdoches author Joe Lansdale said. A lot of them are behind the scenes who people don t notice. They just know the actors saying the lines. But so many people with different abilities are contributing (to film). I think it s going to be marvelous this year. Lansdale is one of the scheduled panelists. His book, Cold in July was adapted to film by director Jim Mickle. It will premier on Feb. 27 at Carmike, and a Q&A with both men will follow. Howard Waldrop has written all kinds of short stories, and he s also a movie expert, and Mike Cassutt has produced, directed and written for film. He s been a story editor, and whatever can be done in film, he s done it. The other panelists are producer and actor Andy Cope, cinematographer Levie Isaacks, producer Eric Hueber, director, producer and writer Gary Fortin and entertainment attorney Larry Waks. Joe got us Waldrop and Cassutt, said Ron Johnson, chairman of the 2015 Nacogdoches Film Festival committee. There s a lot of talent at this one film festival, and it is just going to continue to grow and gain attention. It has always been my dream for this to put Nacogdoches on the map. We have arrived, Johnson said. I think we finally got here. We expect this to continue growing. I think what has helped us most this year is having George R.R. Martin. We are getting some big guns, some important people in the business. When you do that, you attract other people who want to see them. Lansdale agreed. I ve known George Martin for (more than) 30 years, he said. I m excited he is going to be here because he is going to add to this. He s been around a long time not just on Game of Thrones. I think he is a big excitement right now. I definitely think it s going to be the biggest festival we ve ever had. The author of the Game of Thrones book series and producer and screenwriter for its HBO television series adaptation by the same name, Martin is scheduled to sign books at Hastings on Feb. 28. The Lion & the Rose: Game of Thrones will show that night at the Baker Pattillo Student Center. I know the tickets are selling really quickly, Lansdale said.
