1 IE Social Impact Series The global renewable energy business THE GLOBAL RENEWABLE ENERGY BUSINESS Be ahead of the energy future 5-Day International Executive Program June 23-27, 2014 Madrid, Spain
2 THE GLOBAL RENEWABLE ENERGY BUSINESS Be ahead of the energy future Location: IE Business School Campus in Madrid, Spain Duration: 5 days, 9am-6pm Classes: 20 face-to-face sessions, site visits, roundtable & networking event Investment: Overview Our economic future is going to be supported by an energy system that will be increasingly based on renewable energy technologies. Much of it will be for electricity production but there will also be a significant growth of second and third generation biologically produced liquid fuels for transportation applications. This move is already creating major business opportunities across continents, with some countries more advanced than others. For example, Spain is already producing around 40% of its electricity using renewable energy sources, and its solar projects and that of Italy are paving the way for such projects in Northern Africa. Germany now has more than 17,000 MW installed of solar capacity. Even the USA that has been slow in catching up with the trend, is today hosting massive solar and wind projects. But renewable energy projects are no longer just in the realm of developed countries. Today China leads the world in newly installed energy capacity and India s Rajasthan might become a key center for Concentrated Solar Energy projects. Even Latin America is finally showing increasing activities with countries like Brazil, México and Chile leading the way. The first of the new IE Social Impact Series, The Global Renewable Energy Business program will facilitate participants entry or growth in this thriving, environmentally beneficial sector with five days of intense, interactive sessions, a round table and networking event with experts, and site visits to energy farms and control centers in Spain.
3 IE Social Impact Series The global renewable energy business Program objectives The program aims to: 1) Help course attendees understand the dynamics of the renewable energy sector from a global perspective, jumping into many examples derived from the most active markets today. 2) Provide enough business, regulatory and technological background as to: a. Facilitate their entry, shift or growth in the renewable energy sector. b. Aid and encourage them to deepen in specific aspects of the business, technology- or geography-wise. The program is designed so that any interested person, irrespective of his/her former academic training, could easily follow the sessions and actively participate. At the same time someone in the industry could gain significantly greater insight into the broader industry. While not a technical course but a business course, the program will cover some technology issues, as technology is a key driver of the renewable energy business and the basic concepts and trends need to be understood. Participant profile The program is designed for: Energy executives in the non-renewable technologies field: As an entry tool to the sector that will help them understand business opportunities and technology trends, and learn how to migrate into the renewable field. Mid-level managers in the renewable energy sector: to expand their views and take the global perspective and/or explore other areas and technologies in the sector. The financial community: for them to understand how renewable energy projects are set up and what risks and opportunities are involved, in order to effectively evaluate investment viability. Lawyers: to identify opportunities for taking part in the business processes. The media: to know more about what is real and not in the field and to get first-hand quality information about the sector. Equipment suppliers: to understand the trends in the business and spot new opportunities. Public officials in the energy field: to understand what is happening in this sector in the most advanced countries and identify the most effective policies. Other parties interested in entering or strengthening their foothold in the Renewable Energy field. 3
4 Content The program adopts a global perspective, providing an overview of the renewable energy sector worldwide. It will cover a variety of technologies applicable to electricity generation (solar, wind, geothermal, biomass) and transportation applications (biofuels). As the scope of the course is wide, the goal is not to become experts in any of the mentioned technologies but rather to acquire a sense of what matters and what does not, an ability to detect business opportunities, and even to identify dead ends in the sector. The program is organized in three main blocks: 1) General issues applicable to all technologies. These include regulatory issues, electrical grid interconnection issues, incentives, demand structure and trends, and financial and legal issues. 2) Technology by technology review. The second part of the course brings specific business, technical, logistical issues pertinent to each of the main technologies in the renewable energy sector today: solar, wind, biomass, biofuels and geothermal. 3) In practice. Participants will visit a wind farm, a solar photovoltaic farm, and the energy control center in Spain for firsthand experience. The program will then end with a roundtable and networking event with top company representatives.
