2 Master & Dynamic [graphic + production] From October 2014 to August 2015, I worked as a production/graphic designer for a New York-based premium audio company Master & Dynamic. My main responsibilities included creating graphic, packaging, and collateral materials that help define and support M&D brand. 01

4 image/sound collage [interactive] A screen-based piece incorporating with motion, images, and audio. The interface consists of a set of 7 by 4 modular grids, and each module contains a clip of short film and an audio track. By clicking on grid modules, the images and audio are played or paused. The images form different compositions, and audio tracks blend with and play on top of each other. The project was exhibited at the 2014 VCUarts MFA Exhibition at Anderson Gallery. 02

6 a phonetic symbolic alphabet [interactive] This project is an exploration of the transformation between visual and aural languages. The process includes two parts: 1. sound to image and 2. image to sound. English spoken language is translated into a visual symbolic system and later the symbols are transformed back to sound. Part 1: Sound to Image: English spoken language is translated into a symbolic phonetic visual system, based on the pronunciation of vowels and consonants. The symbols reflect the interpretation of sound tune, length, and mouth-shape when pronounce. Part 2: Image to Sound: Symbols are transformed back to audio. It is processed by two tools: Audacity (a digital sound editing program) Any raw data can be imported into Audacity and encoded into digital sound. All vowels are transformed by Audacity. Music box (traditional acoustic instrument) music box generates melodies according to little holes punched on a strip that is fed through it. Melodies differ depending on holes positions and playing pace. All consonants are transformed by a music box. info/soundimagesound/ (click to go to the link) 03

12 graduate seminar class archive [print] For my graduate seminar class in VCU, we were required to write an essay and make a visual response for our reading materials each week. All my verbal and visual responses were collected and archived as a booklet. 05

20 Things I've Learnt in Two Years [print] A final essay for my graduate seminar class, a rough conclusion about the things I learnt in graduate school. It shows my thoughts and some of my works that are related to the topic. A spread of my essay. 08

24 china residencies talk [print] During my summer internship at a non-profit organization China Residencies, I was assigned to design a flyer for our talk at Residency Unlimited. My proposal was this simple and clear b/w flyer, since our limited budget did not allow us to make colorful fancy ones, I used five stars to represent for China and I liked the work very much. 09

25 a bibliography [print] During my study of graphic design, I ve been reading and skimming books and images a lot, some of them were required by school, while some are served for my own curiosity. This is a bibliography poster of 50 books, websites and films that I like and dislike, but somehow essential to design field, among the things I saw. 10

27 100 phrases [interactive] This is an on-going project I started since February, The original idea was to collect the interesting/silly parts of my conversations with friends. Inspired by the Keep Calm and Carry On propaganda poster, I simplified those silly conversations into short phrases (which imitate Keep Calm and Carry On phrase pattern somehow) and recorded them in the form of little printed cards as a personal archive of memories. I established a website in July, 2013 in order to get more audience involved in this project.
