2 A Message fom the MCSBC Campaign Pesident I am delighted to have been asked to take on the ole of Pesident of the MCSBC fundaising appeal. We neve have had such a fantastic chance to make such a positive and lasting impact on owing at Monkton as we do now, and I am hugely excited by the oppotunities that will come fom this poject. It is now exactly 20 yeas since I stated to ow at Monkton and although a lot of wate has passed unde the boat since then, I will neve foget the many geat memoies and valuable lessons leaned fom my fist five yeas of owing at the School. Monkton is a fantastic place to lean to ow with two beautiful stetches of wate at Dundas and Saltfod. In spite of a shaky stat I fell in the ive on the fist day! I quickly fell in love with owing and eveything about it. The Easte Taining camps to Nantes, weekend tips away to ace, coming down and losing myself in the seenity of the ive evey day and, of couse, the Bassknocke and Dung uns on the way back to school, ae just some of the highlights. Even vey simple things like unning down to the ive in cew fomation and eveyone caying the boats up and down the Dundas steps ae still vey fond memoies. I also know that I was leaning some impotant lessons in owing and in life; dedication, had wok, sacifice and, of couse, the impotance of the team with esponsibility, tust and a sense of looking out fo each othe though the highs and lows, both on the ive and at school. I have always been vey gateful fo the stong foundation that these values - and many moe - gave me fo an Olympic owing caee late on. Monkton has an extaodinay owing heitage and I have always been vey poud to have my oots in pat of that. At the last London Olympics in 1948, thee wee five OMs competing at the Olympic egatta winning one Gold and two Silve medals. In moe ecent times, Rowley Douglas, Alex Patidge and I have won thee Gold medals and one Silve at the last thee games an outstanding achievement by one school by any standad. Alex is, of couse, going fo Gold in 2012 and I know that you will want to join me in wishing him well in this. Just as impotant as these moe visible successes ae the hundeds of boys and gils who have leaned to ow at Monkton and who have had a geat and fun expeience in and aound boats. Some have gone on to othe intenational and national honous, many have continued to ow at Univesity and Club level, and I am sue that all of us even those who moved on to othe spots afte Monkton have simila geat memoies and have benefited fom lessons and values leaned on the ive at Monkton fo whateve caee we have chosen. We now have a geat oppotunity to suppot and enhance owing at Monkton so that futue geneations of young oasmen and women can come to love and lean fom the spot. Monkton is one of the few schools in the Bath aea which offes owing. About one-thid of ou pupils at the Senio School between the ages of 13 and 18 yeas paticipate in the spot on a egula basis. Monkton is univalled fo a school of its size in tems of the numbe of oasmen it has poduced at an intenational level. MCSBC is a familia name on the owing cicuit locally, egionally and nationally and ou pupils deive enomous benefit fom taining and competing at these vaious levels. Though a commitment to owing, pupils lean discipline, undestand the impotance of team-wok, gain confidence, gow in matuity and become moe sensitive individuals. These ae Monkton s coe values which we wish to see instilled in each one of ou pupils. In ode to help us delive this impotant aspect of Monkton s educational pogamme and to help sustain ou eputation as a leading owing school in South West England - we need as a matte of ugency, to aise the sum of 750,000 to efubish, upgade and expand ou owing facilities. In addition to a much-needed efubishment of ou existing boathouse at Dundas, it is ou aim to build a new, well-equipped boathouse (with associated facilities) on the Rive Avon at Saltfod. This will enable ou senio squads to tain at moe advanced and demanding levels, and povide the foundation fo the delivey of an exciting, evitalised and moe ambitious pogamme fo owing which will benefit pupils immediately and also in the yeas to come. The details of how this money will be spent is explained below but please may I take this oppotunity - whethe you ae a cuent o a past paent, a fome pupil o a fiend of the School - to ask you to stand with us by making a donation at the level you can affod as we seek to secue the funding equied to upgade this key facility fo ou pupils at Monkton Senio School. 3 Fo ove 130 yeas, MCSBC has povided geneations of Monktonians with skill in a spot that many have pusued long afte leaving school. Just as impotantly, we all shae expeiences, Julian Bewick lasting memoies and a stong foundation fo life s challenges given by membeship of the Boat Club. Athletes of all abilities have benefited fom the competitive and happy spiit they have found at the ive. We welcome the initiative being taken by the School to launch this Boat Club Appeal to meet the eve-inceasing financial demands of unning Monkton owing successfully in the 21st centuy. Fome Mastes i/c & Diecto of Rowing: Chales Gimwade (1963), Julian Bewick (1970), Lindsey Reynolds (1994), Godfey Bishop (1995) & David Conington (1996) MCSBC ecent successes Ove the past decade, owing at Monkton has become eve moe popula and successful. in 2008, the Club won 23 events, and this inceased to 33 in 2009 the J14 and J15 squads won a ecod 8 events at the Wessex Regatta in 2009 and MCSBC was awaded the Victo Ludoum Cup fo the most successful club in 2008 and 2009, the Boat Club won a total of six events at the Avon County Regatta the Gils 1st Cew won 6 events in 2009, as well as epesenting the Club at the Womens Henley Regatta the Boys 1st Squad poduced some memoable pefomances, most notably in the semi-final of Championship Coxless Fous at the National Schools Regatta in 2009, whee they wee just pipped on the line to miss a final spot afte leading the ace until the final 100m the 1st VIII qualified fo Henley Royal Regatta in 2008, 2009 and 2010 Why an upgade and expansion of ou owing facilities is needed the cuent Boathouse, constucted in 1952, has seved the School well but is now in ugent need of efubishment a efubished facility and upgaded equipment is vital fo the delivey of an exciting, evitalised and moe ambitious pogamme fo owing which will benefit pupils immediately and also in the yeas to come a well equipped boathouse and associated facilities ae needed on an altenative, high-quality stetch of ive at Saltfod to enable ou senio squads to tain at moe advanced and demanding levels new owing facilities will be key to attacting new pupils, and also talented staff to Monkton in the futue new facilities will demonstate to the outside wold that we ae seious about ou commitment to owing 4 5

4 Ou Plans details and costs The cost of efubishing the existing boathouse, upgading equipment and poviding an additional owing facility at Saltfod is estimated at 750,000. This sum will be divided between capital expenditue on ugent items (see below) and the establishment of an endowment fund which will povide appoximately 12,000 pa to supplement the funds allocated by the School to the Boat Club fo ongoing unning costs. At this ealy stage in the planning pocess, it is anticipated that the poposed new boathouse at Saltfod will be a shaed facility with Avon County Rowing Club, with whom Monkton has enjoyed a long histoy of coopeation, and the Univesity of Bistol. The School has ageed in pinciple to wok with ACRC to e-develop thei site in ode to povide Monkton with a moden club house with fist-class facilities fo senio squads to tain at moe advanced and demanding levels on a high-quality stetch of wate. 6 Bluefias Monkton Bluefias Boat Club was founded ove 50 yeas ago. School cews competing in events in the school holidays nomally ow unde Bluefias colous, and Old Monktonians have occasionally fomed cews as well. Many fome membes of the School Boat Club contibute to the Bluefias fund, which enables Bluefias to give egula financial suppot to the School Boat Club and its membes. Until 1996, the annual income of Bluefias was no moe than about 1,000, but thee was much goodwill, which encouaged the fomation of the Bluefias Tust, which is now suppoted by many fiends of Monkton owing. Bluefias Tust income has isen damatically and all of it is used to suppot youth owing, both at Monkton and amongst othe school pupils and students. The total amount disbused by the Bluefias Tust since 1996 is in the egion of 170,000, of which 120,000 has helped owing at Monkton. The Bluefias Tustees ae delighted to suppot this appeal and have ageed to make an initial donation of 33,000. The Tustees have also kindly ageed to give futhe amounts fom thei investments to match new o inceased annual donations fom membes of Bluefias, up to a futhe 35,000. Fo evey new annual donation, Bluefias will immediately add five times the annual amount of the donation to the Boat Club appeal fund. Fo example, if you stat giving 100 pe yea to Bluefias, the appeal will immediately benefit by 500. Afte a five yea peiod, the tust will have ecouped this sum of money. Similaly, if you aleady give 10 pe month to Bluefias but decide to tiple you donation to 30 pe month, the tust will give five times the annual incease in you gift i.e. 240 to the Boat Club appeal. 7 Monkton owing has pogessed significantly ove the past decade. To impove futhe ou pefomance and eputation egionally, nationally and intenationally, funding must be secued as a matte of ugency to upgade ou facilities and equipment. Not only will this investment help to secue the long-tem futue of the Boat Club but it will also mean that Monkton owing can pogess to even highe levels of ecognition and achievement. Godon Reay Diecto of Rowing On a pesonal level, Rowing at Monkton was the highlight fo me of two incedible yeas. The school eally did give me new oppotunities in life and the Boat Club was a big pat of that. The fact that all of us ae still in egula contact 18 yeas on speaks volumes fo the influence that the Boat Club has had on us. Duncan Gambill (OM 1992 and a membe of the nd VIII) Monkton has changed my attitude to spot. I gave owing a go as it looked fun. Five yeas on and I now tain seven to eight times a week voluntaily with a dedicated coach. I have competed fo thee yeas at national level and even dabbled in intenational competition. This is just one example of how Monkton has helped me to ealise my potential.
