TITLE Achieving Predictable Aesthetic Outcomes for Anterior Implants As the predictability as the predictability of implant therapy has increased, patients esthetic expectations levels have risen as well. The implant restoration needs to integrate seamlessly with the natural dentition. An understanding of proper treatment sequencing is critical to achieve a highly successful esthetic outcome. Intimate coordination between the precise surgical aspect and the restorative phase is paramount in achieving consistent esthetic restorations. Factors that can impact the restorative outcome are often determined during the surgical aspect of treatment including extraction of teeth, timing and positioning of implant placement, and hard and soft tissue management. The role of provisionalization and abutment design is key in creating the appropriate peri-implant tissue volume. Determining the appropriate stage for when to place provisionals and engage abutments can have a profound impact on the esthetic outcome of the implant restoration. This program will discuss how different treatment protocols can be employed to achieve the desired esthetic outcomes. 1. Understand the impact of treatment timing between the surgical aspect and the restorative outcome. 2. Recognize the role of implant provisionals in creating and maintaining soft tissue contours for implant aesthetics. 3. Determine how to categorize patients according to treatment complexity.

6 Dr. Shigemi Ishikawa Nagai Dr. Shigemi Ishikawa Nagai is an assistant professor of restorative dentistry and biomaterials sciences at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Since arriving at HSDM in 2001, she has been working as a full-time faculty member in prosthodontics and has served as director of advanced dentistry in the DMD program. She also received her board certification in prosthodontics in Japan in While on sabbatical in Boston, Dr. Nagai received a master s degree in biomaterials from Boston University Goldman School of Dentistry in Throughout her career, Dr. Nagai has been dedicated to teaching prosthodontics and mentoring students research, first as assistant professor at Iwate Medical School and, since 2001, at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. TITLE Color Science in Dentistry Hard and soft tissue optical harmony of the anterior region is the defining challenge to achieve optimal esthetics for the final prosthesis. For the hard tissue, base shade selection and value control play very critical roles in obtaining excellent color match. This process requires accurate color determination and understanding three dimensional characteristics, such as, texture and translucency. For the soft tissue, it is important to understand optical properties of gingiva. Thin-peri-implant mucosa leads to a shine through effect of the underlying crown metal-core and titanium implant with a grayish appearance of the gingival cuff. This lecture will present the color science in dentistry, basic and clinical applications that you can utilize to measure esthetic outcomes. 1. To understand the basic of color science in dentistryniques. 2. To illustrate the color reproduction system for ceramic restorations. 3. To present clinical approach to achieve soft tissue esthetics.
