Renewable Ocean Energy for North Carolina Lindsay Dubbs Billy L. Edge Nancy M. White UNC Coastal Studies Institute Renewable ocean energy program 4 th Annual Marine Renewable Energy Technical Conference 10 January, 2013 Warwick, RI
Details of the program NC State Legislation Develop Partnership UNC Coastal Studies Institute (UNC CSI), North Carolina State University (NCSU), University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC), North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University (NCA&T) Conduct research to conceptualize, design, construct, operate and market new and innovative technologies Recurring funding that may be used to leverage federal or private funding Shall be interdisciplinary Mission Use renewable ocean energy wisely to effectively and economically fulfill part of the energy needs of the State and in the process create jobs and economic opportunities.
Where we ve been: Year 1 accomplishments Resource assessments Tidal current-complete Wave-ongoing Gulf Stream-ongoing Desktop analyses of technologies and technology components Magnetic gearing systems for power take-off Ocean compressed air energy storage New tidal and wave energy devices Environmental assessment and permitting summarization Environmental GIS database established Literature review First test device deployed from Jennette s Pier Resolute Marine surge WEC, 2012
Where we are going: Year 2 and beyond Ocean energy power take-off using magnetic gears Ocean compressed air energy storage (OCAES) Gulf Stream based energy generation Environmental assessment and stakeholder outreach Jennette s Pier MHK test center
Projects: Ocean energy power take-off using magnetic gearing Led by: Jonathan Bird and Aixi Zhou, UNCC Subhashish Bhattacharya, NCSU Objective: Develop low-cost, environmentally benign, highly reliable power take off technology for ocean energy generation Highlights Avoid the use of rare earth magnets = low cost and environmentally benign More efficient and reliable than mechanical counterpart - contact free torque production, no gear lubrication and inherent overload protection
Projects: Ocean Compressed Air Energy Storage (OCAES) Led by: Paul Ro, Andre Mazzoleni, Mo Gabr, Shamim Rahman, Iqbal Husain, Emmanuel B. Agamloh, Alex Huang, NCSU Aixi Zhou, UNCC Objective: Deep water storage of air compressed by energy generated by wind, waves, and solar that can be released when energy is required to maintain baseload power Highlights Utilizes hydrostatic pressure underwater to avoid problems of high pressure in traditional CAES models Potential to solve the intermittency problem associated with many renewable sources of energy
Projects: Gulf Stream based energy generation Led by: Billy Edge, NCSU and UNC CSI Mo Gabr, NCSU Arturo Fernandez, NC A&T Andrew Keeler, ECU and UNC CSI Joe Decarolis, NCSU Mike Muglia and Lindsay Dubbs, UNC CSI Objectives: Assess the spatial and temporal patterns of the Gulf Stream resource off Cape Hatteras, NC Geotechnical and environmental characterization Economic assessment of transmission routes Coordinate with FAU and SEMREC Estimated area of interest for Gulf Stream energy off the NC coast. (courtesy of M. Muglia) Highlights Interdisciplinary work to support the future harnessing of Gulf Stream energy
Projects: Environmental assessment, public policy formation, and stakeholder outreach Led by: Lindsay Dubbs, UNC-CH and UNC CSI Andrew Keeler, ECU and UNC CSI John McCord, UNC CSI Michael Piehler, UNC-IMS and UNC CSI Objectives: Identify and mitigate potential conflicts between Program projects and offshore natural resources and the use of the marine environment by humans and other organisms Quantify environmental benefits of project technologies relative to existing alternatives Initiate public engagement and education Make recommendations to simplify the regulatory burden while still protecting the public interest Highlights Working in cooperation with each of the Program s projects
Projects: Jennette s Pier test facility Led by: Billy Edge, NCSU and UNC CSI Mike Muglia, UNC CSI Lindsay Dubbs, UNC-CH and UNC CSI Objectives: Offer a shallow water platform for testing marine hydrokinetic devices Allow for experiments on and observation and monitoring of the impacts of devices on the surrounding environment Highlights: Testing of a device with our second partner planned for spring 2013 In the process of applying for permits for two test berths within 10 m of, and 100 m offshore of, Jennette s Pier
Additional projects GPU Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics for MHK design Led by: Billy Edge (NCSU, UNC CSI), Robert Dalrymple (OSU), and Kevin Gamiel (UNC-RENCI) Objective: Develop better computational design tools for MHKs Wave Energy Assessment Led by: Kevin Gamiel (UNC-RENCI), Billy Edge (NCSU, UNC CSI) Brian Blanton (UNC-RENCI), Jeff Hanson (USACE), and Lindsay Dubbs (UNC CSI, UNC-CH) Objectives: Develop high resolution 20 year hindcast Estimate extreme wave conditions Provide results in GIS framework
