3 Overview State and Federal legislation mandates in combating childhood obesity Interconnection between physical wellbeing and healthy living School environments need to support both academic achievement and physical activity School environments need to be responsive to new innovations for physical activities beyond P.E. Overview Communities work together to establish a buddy system Planners, architects, parents & students listen and work together in delivering physical activity programs

A Little Trivia Fun How many calories used in physical activity: 1 hour of moderate walking? 1 hour dancing? 1 hour running? 1 hour shooting baskets? 1 hour mowing lawn (power)? 1 hour beating around the bush?

5 P.E. and CA Schools Implication of physical activity for academic achievement: Less regular physical activity results in lower test scores Higher achievement is associated with higher levels of fitness Beneficial consequences for academic progress with regular physical fitness regardless of location, socio-economic status The Way Kids Learn Kids K-12 Highly bodily-kinesthetic: touch it, feel it, see it, do it Group oriented like being connected, will do activities because everyone else does Scary statistics don t cut it making it personal to looks and social status is key to connecting with youth

6 The Way Kids Learn Kids K-12 Have become more sedentary 70% nationwide cannot pass moderate physical education test Would engage in activities if it related less to competition and more to socialization Work ethics and physical activity are interconnected less are seeing value in being active CSBA Policy Brief Implications of physical activity for academic achievement Physical activity = academic outcome CA physical education requirements 200 minutes to 400 minutes for 1-6 and 7-12 CA model contents standards and curriculum Life skills PE at all grade levels School boards role Adopted standards January 12, 2005
