1 As we come to the end of 2013, your Committee is looking back through the highs and lows of the year so that decisions can be made about our 2014 program. Obviously, tablets (ipad and Samsung) are proving popular and we intend to proceed with these classes, maybe even extending their scope through a variety of apps. Conventional computing classes will continue of course, perhaps slightly altered as to length and content. If you would like to up skill, with other classes or workshops introduced that are not now provided, please let us know. Ingredients 1kg mixed dried fruit 2 cups self raising flour 2 cups fresh or bottled pure orange juice. One of our members uses 1 cup orange and 1 cup sherry ( well it is Christmas!) Method Mix the three ingredients well together and pour into a lined 8 inch square cake tin. Bake at 180 for 2 hours. Ice when cold if you wish but is great with some holly on top. I have never had a failure with this recipe. It is also wonderful for people with diabetic problems 4

5 ipad and ios7 power consumption If you have an ipad and you have downloaded the latest operating system ios7 you may have noticed your device quick to lose power. One such example is with the setting COVER LOCK/UNLOCK feature (found at the bottom of the GENERAL settings). If its set to OFF it means that when the cover is in place the ipad does not actually go to sleep as expected but remains awake, and therefore consumes the battery. By simply setting it to ON (green) the problem seems to disappear. Of course, like the light in the fridge with the door shut you don t know if the light is on or off, when the cover on the ipad is on it is not possible to see if the screen is on or off! Albert Einstein New app teaches you smartphone basics Vodafone has launched a free app designed to help encourage seniors make the transition to smart phones. The app, called "Starting Blocks" is available from the Android app store, and with eight simple and interactive lessons, introducers you to smart phone basics. Here is the link to the Android Store with the app: While our kids and grandchildren take the smart phone starting blocks like tapping, swiping, scrolling and even locking the device for granted, it can be a whole new world for seniors unfamiliar with mobile technology. Now there s less to worry about. When the app is opened, users get a brief tutorial on tapping and scrolling the two skills required to use it. Other lessons include basic touch, gestures, power, the back and home buttons and inputting information. Smart phones are for everyone, and Vodafone hopes Starting Blocks will give seniors the confidence to use mobile technology to its full potential. 5
