For 6 years now, Jerry has led a twiceweekly Hope Parkinson exercise class, where he always reminds everyone, The more you work at it, the more you ll improve. Seeing improvement in his students is for Jerry the gift of a lifetime. Jerry s story is much like our own. We find great satisfaction in sharing and caring for our Parkinson s community. 3 National Parkinson Foundation: Webinar Would you like to know more about how to live well with Parkinson s disease? Join us for this special webinar hosted by NPF s National Medical Director, Dr. Michael S. Okun, as he shares his knowledge and experience on this important topic for patients, caregivers and their families based on his new book on Parkinson s treatment. On December 5 from 1:00-2:00 p.m., we will be hosting a community viewing of this important event at four of our Hope sites. Dr. Michael S. Okun, Director and Co-director of University of Florida s Center for Movement Disorders and Neurorestoration, an NPF Center of Excellence will discuss his new bestselling book Parkinson s Treatment - 10 Secrets to a Happier Life. Dr. Okun aims to help patients live well with PD. He is considered a world authority on Parkinson s disease. both in areas of clinical care and in research. Reservations are required; please call You can register to attend this event at your choice of any of the following locations: Hope Community Rooms HealthPark 9470 HealthPark Circle, Fort Myers, FL Hope Community Rooms Cape Coral 2430 Diplomat Pkwy. E, Cape Coral, FL Hope Community Rooms Lehigh Acres 1201 Wings Way, Lehigh Acres, FL Hope Community Rooms Bonita Springs Imperial Parkway, Bonita Springs, FL Learn More about the New Sinemet by Dr. Amanda Avila, Hope Parkinson Program Medical Director There is much excitement in the Parkinson s community about IPX066, also known by its branded name, Rytary. Many even refer to the medication as a newer, more effective version of Sinemet. This quarter, I will discuss Rytary and what patients should expect (and not expect) from the medicine. Rytary is a new formulation of extended-release carbidopa/ levodopa. It has been the subject of a recent and interesting series of clinical trials headed by Dr. Robert Hauser at the University of South Florida. Dr. Hauser, along with 68 other scientists from around the world, found that Rytary allowed Parkinson s patients to reduce off-time by over an hour. Patients were also able to dose their Parkinson s medication fewer times in the day. The reduction of off-time and less frequent dosing are two important benefits of this new medication which could potentially improve quality of life. There were, however, some downsides to the medication in the studies. First, Rytary increased the amount of levodopa in the bloodstream which likely lead to the reduction in off-time however, patients should be cautioned that this increase in medication could potentially increase dyskinesia as well. Second, although the patients could dose the medication fewer times daily (3.6 vs. 5 times daily) the overall total number of pills required to treat their symptoms was actually higher. Although Rytary is an exciting breakthrough in treating Parkinson s, there are several important symptoms of the disease which are not affected by this new medication. Patients should remember that Rytary generally cannot effectively treat non-motor symptoms such as soft voice, swallowing dysfunction, memory concerns or mood problems. It also does not treat balance or walking trouble. We expect to learn much more about Rytary once it becomes available in early Dr. Avila is a neurologist and movement disorder specialist. She will help us to ensure that the Hope Parkinson Program continues to be a rich source of learning, socialization and enjoyment. Contact Dr. Avila at her medical practice: Florida Neurology Group Phone: (239)

4 Knowledge is Power Knowledge is power because it allows one to become proactive and make decisions to improve their quality of life. Knowledge about the many movement and non-movement symptoms of PD is important because you can then take action to lessen their impact. Education can help you prepare to advocate on your own behalf or that of someone you are caring for with PD. Hope Parkinson Program: Inspirational Story Doug Kirk was diagnosed with Parkinson s Disease at the age of 40. His initial thoughts about the disease conjured up images of being wheelchair bound. Now eleven years later he just completed his first RAGBRAI (Register s Annual Great Bike Doug and Sheila Kirk Ride Across Iowa). These are photos of Doug and his wife Sheila as they rode 430 miles of the rolling hills in southern Iowa in seven days. Next month, Doug will share what inspired the ride and talk about how the training and the trip improved his PD symptoms. He rode with a team that raises money to fund research to identify the positive impacts cycling has on PD. Look for the full story in the next newsletter.

6 Exercise and Parkinson s disease Why is exercise important to those living with Parkinson s disease? People who exercise are better able to cope with this chronic disease. People who combine medication and exercise have a much lower level of disability. It is believed that exercise may be Neuro- Protective. Many experts believe that exercise can even slow the progression of the disease. Exercise can improved balance and promote more fluid movement in ways that medication alone cannot. Exercise is medicine for Parkinson s disease, so don t miss a dose.
