Try ot to stad or walk too much, but be sure that you do get up ad move your legs every hour or so. raised toilet seat ca be helpful. Keep your icisio clea ad dry. Ask your surgeo or physical therapist about stretchig ad stregtheig exercises that might help your recovery process. Call your doctor immediately if you experiece ay of the followig symptoms: Chills or fever greater tha 38 C (100 F). 6 SKIN CARE Have someoe look at your ski every day, icludig elbows, heels, buttocks, hips ad shoulders i particular. These areas should be kept clea ad dry. You ca rub them with lotio to help circulatio, but do ot put lotio directly o your icisio. A sore will start out lookig pik or red, ad the the ski might break ope. Let your physicia kow if you have ay areas o your ski that are red or have a ope sore. WOUND CARE You ca shower whe your physicia says it is okay. The geeral rule is to keep your kee icisio clea ad dry. A dry sterile dressig should be applied util there is o draiage. The, you ca take off the dressig ad expose your icisio to air. If the staples are catchig o your clothes, you may cotiue to cover them with a gauze dressig. The staples will be removed i about 10 days. You ll make a appoitmet to have them removed. PREVENTING INFECTIONS Although the risk of ifectio after kee replacemet is small, it is importat to be aware of the causes ad symptoms of ifectio. A ifectio followig a total kee replacemet procedure ca result from bacteria that eter the blood durig detal procedures, as a result of uriary tract ifectios or via ski ifectios. These bacteria ca deposit aroud your icisio site ad cause a ifectio. You should cotact your orthopedic surgeo if you otice ay of the followig symptoms: You experiece chills ad shakig. You have a fever of higher tha 38 C (100 F) that lasts 48 hours. Your kee icisio site shows icreasig redess, tederess or swellig. You have icreasig costat kee pai durig activity ad rest. There is leakig or draiage of fluid from the kee woud. It is importat to regularly talk to all your physicias, detists ad other healthcare providers to see if you require prevetive atibiotics before ay scheduled procedures. 4

Takig estroge uless deemed safe by your physicia. EXERCISES - ANKLE PUMPS Move foot up toward the shi, the dowward. Repeat. Switch legs. Akle Pumps 6
9 ANKLE ROLLS Move the akle i a circular patter. Repeat. Switch legs. Akle Rolls QUAD SETS Lie dow with legs exteded i bed. Tighte quad muscles o frot of legs. Push back of kee ito bed. Hold for 5 secods ad repeat. Do ot tighte buttocks. Quad Sets GLUT SETS Lie o your back with your legs straight. Squeeze buttocks together. Hold for 5 secods. Repeat. Do ot tighte quad muscles. Glut Set SHORT ARC QUADS Whe i bed, support your operated leg with a small pillow to keep your kee at a 45 agle (someoe should help you place the pillow uder your kee). Straighte leg at kee by liftig just heel off the bed. Hold for 5 secods. Retur to start positio. Repeat. Short Arc Quads Pursue Life 7
10 KNEE EXTENSION - STRIGHT LEG RAISE Lie back with uoperated kee bet ad foot flat. Keep the operated leg straight ad toes poited up, the lift the operated leg up oe foot. Hold for 5 secods ad repeat. d b Kee Extesio (straight leg raise) KNEE EXTENSION - ACTIVE Sit with back agaist chair. Straighte operated kee. Hold for 5 secods ad repeat. Kee Extesio (active) KNEE EXTENSION - PASSIVE Place a pillow or towel roll uder heel of operated (ot uder back of kee). Lift uoperated leg. Hold for 5 secods, lower dow ad repeat. Kee Extesio (passive) KNEE AND HIP FLEXION - HEEL SLIDE Lie o your back. Slide the heel of your operated leg up to your bottom. Hold for 5 secods, slide your heel back dow ad repeat. Kee ad Hip Flexio (heel slide) 8
11 KNEE FLEXION SITTING - PASSIVE Usig your uoperated leg to support your operated leg, raise your operated leg approximately 5 iches off the floor. Your surgeo may allow the followig levels of weight bearig: Toe touch dow almost o body weight should be placed o the operated leg; just touch the foot to the floor. 12 USING A WALKER Usig a Walker Place the walker oe step ahead of you. dow first. Brig the o-operated leg up i frot of the operated leg. Repeat the process. USING CRUTCHES Stadig with Crutches 10

17 STALL SHOWER Use a stall shower if you have oe. It will be easier to get i ad out of. TO GET IN THE STALL SHOWER Walk to the edge of the shower with your walker. 18 TO GET OUT OF THE STALL SHOWER If seated, Push off the back of the chair ad keep oe had o the walker. Stad up straight usig the walker for support. TUB SHOWER TO GET INTO THE TUB SHOWER 16

Keep your operated leg out straight. TO GET OUT OF THE TUB SHOWER Push off the back of the chair ad keep oe had o the walker. Stad up straight. Pursue Life 17
20 CAR TRANSFER GETTING INTO THE BACK SEAT Back up to the car with the walker. Hold oto the car seat for support. You may also roll dow the widow ad hold oto the door. Sit o the edge of the car with the operated leg straight out. Always get i o the side such that the seat will support your operated leg. RIGHT LEG = driver s side LEFT LEG = passeger s side 18
21 GETTING INTO THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT Push the frot passeger seat all the way back ad reclie it to a 45 agle. Back up to the car with the walker. Pursue Life 19
22 SQUATTING GETTING INTO THE SQUATTING POSITION Stad perpedicular to the wall, with oe had o the wall for guidace. With feet shoulder-width apart. Keep your head ad eck straight, i-lie with your spie. GETTING OUT OF THE SQUATTING POSITION With your feet i-lie with your shoulders, slowly stad up usig the wall for support. 20

24 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is the prostheses made of? There are differet materials that the kee could be made from. The Freedom Kee is made up of a cobalt chromium molybdeum alloy which has high stregth ad corrosio resistace. The bearig material, which substitutes for the cartilage, is made of ultra high molecular weight polyethylee which is lightweight ad has excellet wear properties. How much does it weigh? About.5 kg (or approximately 1 poud). The fabricatio materials were chose because of their light weight. Will I set off metal detectors? Yes. The surgeo will give you a card or ote that will alert people that you have had kee replacemet. It is recommeded that you carry this card with you as you would carry your idetificatio, credit card or driver s licese. Whe do staples come out? About 10 to 14 days after surgery. Your surgeo will decide exactly whe the staples ca be removed based o the healig of the ski aroud your icisio. Whe ca I shower? Usually about 4 days after surgery. Your surgeo will decide exactly whe you will be able to shower. Whe ca I drive? Four to 6 weeks after surgery. This is the approximate time period it takes for you to gai the bedig ad straighteig ability i your kee that is eeded to operate the foot pedals of a vehicle. Ca I sit o the floor after my surgery?
