1 Advisers: Keys to Encouraging International Leadership at Your School Dan Morrissey, Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid, Western Reserve Academy, Hudson, OH Goals of this presentation: Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man that he didn't, didn't already have Tin Man, America During this session I will: - Help participants understand the international student perspective - Help participants define what leadership might look like on their campuses - Present data supporting strong advising programs - Suggest some ways in which school leaders can change school culture to make leadership international friendly - Review some exercises and resources schools can use right away! 3 What is advising? This is about advising Every school defines advising differently, but in most schools advisers: Are charged with tracking a group of students academic, social, and emotional progress as they advance through school Usually specialize in helping students develop life skills Are models good behavior Partner with parents and other adults on campus Practice objective parenting Make sausage! What is advising? [T]he key to successful advising is simply having a keen interest in and awareness of each child and his or her environment, needs, and challenges.
