Reminder: - This is a participation based session! Warning: - We will move fast! This PPT and all attachments will be available via Google Drive. Who s in the Room? 1

3 What is advising? This is about advising Every school defines advising differently, but in most schools advisers: Are charged with tracking a group of students academic, social, and emotional progress as they advance through school Usually specialize in helping students develop life skills Are models good behavior Partner with parents and other adults on campus Practice objective parenting Make sausage! What is advising? [T]he key to successful advising is simply having a keen interest in and awareness of each child and his or her environment, needs, and challenges. (*) * Peter Gow The Intentional Teacher, Avocus Publishing What advising is not - Parenting - Interceding with other faculty and administrators on advisee s behalf (or the advisee s parent(s)) - Being friends - Advising food 3
4 (Digression Warning!) Advising is evolving Advising is evolving - Midnight Curriculum - College placement (Much like coaching) What colleges have found good can advising do: Deliberate and intentional advising can: # Retention * # Enhance Learning * Develop civic responsibility + Develop intellectual and academic competence + (and confidence!) Assist students in exploring identity + Ease homesickness and ease anxiety about new experiences * First Year Advising, A Compendium of Best Practices. M Tardy Editor.
