3 Quincy Commerford, 23, student Texas A&M Univ., U.S.A. UISS I have had several experiences with study abroad programs, and I can positively say UISS is the best. Not only do you get to learn Swedish from some of the best instructors, you also get to meet many great people all while living in one of the most beautiful countries in the world. The social opportunities UISS offers made my experience 10 times better. Within 3 weeks, I met tons of friends and drastically improved my Swedish. Furthermore, the activities and weekend trips are excellent and broad; UISS offers a wide variety of activities that cater to everyone while adding in some Swedish tradition. While the farewell dinners are bittersweet, it is a true rewarding farewell full of Swedish tradition and hanging out with friends. Of course, which is also very important is the staff. The staff is beyond friendly and helpful, so trust me, they will become your friend by the end of your session. So, come to UISS to have a study abroad experience of a lifetime, meet new friends, and create new memories! Emmi van den Boom, 26, journalist, The Netherlands, UISS 2014, emmi.vandenboom@gmail.com Growing up bilingual left me with a pretty okay Swedish tongue, but with too little knowledge about the grammar. So therefore I decided to go to Sweden for four weeks and study with UISS and take off to Lapland for a few days with fellow students. The school did a good job getting me in the right class and making sure I learned what I wanted to learn. Because of the dedicated teachers and intense learning program I was able to improve my grammar in just three weeks. And since all the classes are just in Swedish, I also improved my talking day after day. But the program is amazing outside the classroom as well. The lovely staff go out of their way to make sure you are having the time of your life and they would help you with any kind of problem you might get into (losing you luggage is just an example). They set up activities almost every night so you don t have to be afraid to get bored and you get to know the other students right away. In just three weeks I made close friends who I already missed the moment I got on the airplane back home. So if you re thinking of joining UISS but can t decide if you rather spend your summer vacation in school or travel, don t hesitate; just take the chance of learning a language in a beautiful city. Because studying at UISS isn t just about learning the language. You ll get to know the Swedish culture thanks to the trips and cultural evenings at school and you become part of (student) life in Uppsala. It s the best way to get to know Sweden as it really is. This summer with UISS I fell in love with Sweden all over again and I wouldn t have wanted to miss it for the world. Christopher Vidler, 21, student Durham Uni., United Kingdom, UISS 2013 & 2014, chris.s.vidler@btinternet.com Returning to UISS for a second summer in 2014 was undoubtedly one of the best decisions of my life. Last year I started learning a new language virtually from scratch, made a huge amount of progress in it and met tons of new friends and contacts from around the world along the way. This year I came back for more of the same and can safely say I wasn t disappointed! There s so much I love about this program. The range of courses and activities on offer is astounding, and it s great to do more active, drama and performance-based afternoon classes such as Förbättra din Svenska and Swedish Musical Theater that get you out of the classroom, training your Swedish in a different way. Then there are also the many trips and excursions to places such as Vildmark in Värmland that put the beautiful Swedish countryside right on your doorstep. And last but not least, there s the incredible enthusiasm of the staff and students alike, which in my opinion make the program what it is: an unforgettable summer experience in one of Sweden s finest cities, learning Swedish with some of the most fantastic people you ve ever met. Jag kan verkligen rekommendera det! 1

4 A WORD FROM THE DIRECTOR Welcome to the Uppsala Int l Summer Session, UISS. Please read this brochure very carefully, as it will provide you with all the information you ll need to prepare for your studies with the UISS in Uppsala, Sweden. The UISS is a non-profit organization and is completely self-supportive. We teach all classes at Vuxenskolan, a modern facility in the center of Uppsala. All teachers within the UISS are qualified to teach at an academic level. The teachers of Swedish have an academic degree in teaching Swedish as a foreign language. New teaching methods are applied and this results in an active, motivating and stimulating atmosphere in our classes. Our courses are intensive and are intended for the serious and motivated student. Our students will learn a lot of Swedish next to increasing their knowledge about Swedish culture, history and society. I am well aware how important it is to see to it that everyone has a good time, sees something of the country and has some time to travel on their own. Also, I find it very important to maintain the personal atmosphere that always has been a strength of this program. We therefore do not admit more than 120 students at the same time. Every year about 220 students and professionals from all over the world participate in the UISS. In addition to studying, students also enjoy living in Uppsala and participating in Swedish student life. Uppsala is a beautiful and lively city during the summer. In Uppsala each week, a number of events are organized by cultural organizations. The student clubs (nations), offer good and affordable food and drink, and have a club night several times per week. The lake is close by and one will often find our students there on the weekends. Stockholm, with all it has to offer, is only 45 minutes away by train. The weekend trips to Helsinki, Värmland and Lapland are unforgettable experiences. Two highlights during the summer are the potluck dinner, where students bring food that is typical for their homelands, and the farewell banquet. Each three-week session ends with a 3-course dinner or buffet and dance, a so-called student gasque, where students and teachers perform songs and sketches. In 2015 the dinners will have a theme. July 2 will have a Pirate theme, and July 24 will be Swedish style, where people can dress up as a famous Swedish character or in blue and yellow. On August 13 we will have a more typical formal three-course dinner. The theme is dress-up! Spending a summer together with people from 40 different countries, ages 18-65, with different backgrounds, is a valuable and interesting experience, one that you will not easily forget. In short, I think the UISS has a lot to offer and I can assure you that you will have a great summer with us, as you combine your studies with interesting and fun experiences. I personally very much enjoy working with this program, as it gives me the opportunity to meet so many people from all corners of the world with one thing in common: an interest in Sweden, its language and culture. Please don t ever hesitate to contact me directly if you have any questions. I hope to see you this summer in Uppsala. Nelleke Dorrestijn, director@uiss.org 2

12 description of courses Uppsala International Summer Session has organized summer courses in Swedish since 1963 for students, teachers, Swedish youth living abroad, translators, interpreters, etc. The most important course in the UISS is Swedish as a foreign language, which is organized on nine levels in accordance with the levels in Common European Framework of Reference for languages, learning, teaching and assessment. (CEF). Please consult the Council of Europe web site: linguistic/cadre1_en.asp for detailed information on levels A1 through C2. UISS Teachers 2014 Explanation of levels: The content of CEF levels describes your proficiency in the Swedish language after completion of the level. For example: as a complete beginner you start in level A1 and before going into level A2, you must have attained the proficiency as described under A1. SWEDISH A1 (complete beginners) Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help. SWEDISH A2 Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, employment, local geography). Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need. SWEDISH B1 Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst traveling. Can produce simple connected text on topics, which are familiar, or of personal interest. Can 10

13 describe experiences and events, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans. SWEDISH B2 Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialization. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options. Assessment in courses The student s performance in courses is evaluated continually, based on assignments, presentations, presence, class participation. The assessment will not count for more than 25% of the final grade, which will be received after the final exam (or paper for afternoon classes) at the end of a 3-week period. Further information regarding language instruction Swedish is taught 4 days a week, with a minimum of 5 lesson hours a day. A basic orientation into cultural and social patterns and characteristics is integrated in the teaching of the Swedish language. Swedish instructors specially trained to teach Swedish as a foreign language teach all classes. How to determine your level of Swedish? Please take the placement test at course-levels/14-application/46 Please do not use any help from books or persons. Do not just guess. If you really have no idea what the answer should be, then leave it open. Once in Uppsala a short assessment will take place in class, both in oral and writing skills. A student that is not in the right level will be placed in the most suitable level. If you have studied Swedish on your own, without any teacher guidance, then please inform the director of this, when sending the test results. 11

14 SPECIAL COURSES in addition to the regular program Svenska för utlandssvenska ungdomar This course is especially designed for expatriated young Swedes between 18 and 26. Students are only accepted into this course if they demonstrate conversational skills at minimum level B1+, and as such, the focus is on the continued development of written, oral and literary skills. The writing part of the course includes spelling and general rules. Different aspects of grammar are being dealt with, so that the student will be able to produce grammatically correct texts. Writing exercises are both free writing assignments as well as writing under strict directives. In this way, the student will have the opportunity to practice various linguistic styles. Vocabulary needs to be enhanced so that the student can express himself in a varied and precise manner in different situations. The student will learn this through discussions as well as individual presentations.. Listening and reading comprehension are also part of this course. This course is taught for 3, 6 or 9 weeks as part of the regular curriculum. Please also see special information about scholarships given to these young people on page 6. 17 diskriminering. THE SWEDISH FILM July 27 August 14 The course will provide concise and informative insights into Swedish film. We will look at the work of Ingmar Bergman who was born in Uppsala, and also study the work of new directors such as Lasse Hallström, Colin Nutley, Lukas Moodysson and Josef Fares. Examples of popular film genres specific to Sweden will be studied as well as documentaries. The social and historical contexts to these films will be presented so the course can be considered as an historical overview of Sweden through moving images. The Swedish Film Class with teacher Mattias Löw 15

Titus Ting, UISS 2014, 23, student UC Berkeley, Taiwan, titusting@berkeley.edu UISS has without a doubt been an experience of a lifetime. I came here with one year of Swedish under my belt, and when I left I felt like I had gained three more years of Swedish. The teachers are phenomenal, the staff is so capable, and the students are lovely beyond words. I might actually have left a piece of my heart behind in Uppsala. Shelley Jones, UISS 2014, 65, college instructor, U.S.A. shjones@linfield.edu The UISS program exceeded my expectations! I attended a 3 week session and surprised myself with how much Swedish I learned in that amount of time. My teacher was outstanding and the classes were both fun and motivating. I learned much about the Swedish social services system in the Cradle to Grave class and again, had an excellent teacher. Uppsala is a lovely city in which to apply what one learns in class. I highly recommend this program it was the best learning experience of my life! Matthias Feist, UISS 2014, 27, programmer, Germany. matze@matf.de When I first watched the Youtube-Clip about UISS and heard Nelleke talking about UISS being a life-changing experience for some, I thought this might be a bit exaggerated. Now after my 3-week course I can truly confirm that this is not the case. You won t only develop a deep understanding of the Swedish language and culture but most certainly make friends from countries all over the world as well. After your arrival in Uppsala and being welcomed by the wonderful staff the journey begins: Your days will be packed with language lessons in the morning, afternoon courses on various subjects and activities in the evening. The program is very intense and you will dive into the language and the culture at a very rapid pace. I assure you: You will be astonished by the speed you can feel yourself progressing and getting better and better every day. The only thing I regret from my stay at UISS is that I ve only booked 3 weeks, which was in my opinion way too short. I would recommend at least 6 weeks! But I will most certainly come back to UISS and the beautiful Uppsala in 2015 because now I know how cool and effective this program is and now I don t need to be convinced by a testimonial anymore ;-) 20
