14 Values Underpinning the Code of Professional Conduct Elements of the Code of Professional Conduct for Nurses Nurses and people: 1)Respect dignity and individuality. 2)Respect cultural needs and values. 3)Work in partnership to promote and protect wellbeing. Nurses and practice: 4)Maintain trust by providing safe and competent care. 5)Respect privacy and confidentiality. 6)Act with integrity to justify trust. Behaviors & Ethics for Nursing The Code of Professional Conduct for Nurses
15 Nurses and People Make the care of people your first concern, treating them as individuals, with respect their dignity. You must do no harm. It is essential that consent is taken prior to any procedure; it is a patient s right to refuse. Collaborate with those in your care. Respect confidentiality. Treat patients, families, employees and others with respect, dignity and fairness. You have a responsibility to promote trust through your professional conduct and personal behavior. Act with honesty, compassion and integrity. Nurses and Practice You are personally accountable for your actions - and omissions in your practice. You must be able to justify decisions. You must be able to recognize and work within the limits of your competency in order to practice safely with autonomy. You have a responsibility to conduct yourself within the standards, laws and regulations of the profession. Practice reflectively, ethically and safely; follow international laws and the laws of the State of Qatar and policies of HMC. You must keep clear and accurate records of the discussions you have, the assessments you make, the treatment and medicines you give. You must take responsibility to deal with problems. Behaviors & Ethics for Nursing The Code of Professional Conduct for Nurses
16 Nurses and Profession Help determine and implement clinical nursing practice, management, research and education standards. Create a positive practice environment and maintain safe, equitable social and economic working conditions. Protect the natural environment and be aware of its consequences on health. Provide a high standard of practice and care at all times. Be accountable for your professional development; maintain safe and effective practice. Have the knowledge and skills for safe and effective practice. Recognize and work within the limits of your competence. Nurses and Co-Workers Work with others to protect and promote the health and wellbeing of those in your care, their families and the wider community. Delegate effectively. Provide compassionate, high quality, cost effective and comprehensive nursing care in collaboration with other members of the healthcare team; treat your colleagues fairly, and without discrimination, in delivering care that is directed towards health promotion, health maintenance and disease prevention. Manage risk. Behaviors & Ethics for Nursing The Code of Professional Conduct for Nurses
