33 MAIN FACTORS FOR SUCCESS IN TRADITIONAL PERIOD Strong economic development of the rural areas Dismally fragmented parcelation in some areas, enabled to achieve spectacular improvements Project initiatives on a local level New land provided space for relocation of farms Market opportunities of the EU Development and Reconstruction fund provided safety net for farmers, wanting to quit Government incentives for parcel improvement and investments in farm modernization

34 ACTIVITIES AND PRODUCTS IN TRADITIONAL PERIOD Land consolidation; improvement of agricultural parcellation, water management and infrastructure. Lowering cost of production, increasing productivity agricultural products (milk, meat, grain, etc.). Livability of rural municipalities (waste water systems, community houses, etc.)

35 MAIN OBJECTIVE DLG PRESENT To improve the layout and structure of the rural areas aimed at the creation of a functional and attractive rural environment, in which it is pleasant to work, live and recreate for residents and city visitors alike

53 LAND DEVELOPMENT IN THE NETHERLANDS Projects initiated locally, and planned and executed by local development committee (LDC) Three expert (semi) government services assist LDC DLG rural development and process management Cadastre parcellation plan / land owner and tenancy rights BBL land procurement and re-distribution (since 1995 integrated within DLG) Provinces are presently responsible for projects (before 1994 this was inter-ministerial committee)
