Title Host Co-Host CCAN is a Technology Centre funded by Enterprise Ireland & IDA Ireland
CCAN, in then 2010 and now 2010 (7 companies, 3 institutes) 2015 (22 companies, 6 institutes)
Materials alone does not a product make Systems Products Nano Materials Components 3
A Nobody supply chain is the example best at everything Touch interface S1 processor Op Amp in sensor Supply chain?? AMOLED display Wifi Gyro, accel Ceramics
The CCAN Model Host Co-Host CCAN is a Technology Centre funded by Enterprise Ireland & IDA Ireland
CCAN s Mission faster innovation through better collaboration Make it easy for Irish companies to access and use Irish & European nano-expertise to drive product innovation
CCAN: New materials for advanced products ICT Polymers for medical devices Nanoparticles for biomarker detection Advanced materials for energy harvesting Metal layers for IC interconnects Nanocoatings for microdroplet control Medical Surface patterning for controlled cell attachment Devices.and now many more see
The CCAN Model Easier Collaboration via Supply Chain Partnerships CCAN Market, product development & commercialisation experience Nano-enabled products & solutions Industry problems Nanotech expertise
CCAN Founding Principles (2010) we will...get companies involved earlier in tech development..minimise barriers to entry & exit..change project partners as projects evolve..reward & incentivise active members..have the same IP & legal rules for everyone..build supply chain collaborations within projects..not build a new research group..act on behalf of companies
A growing innovation ecosystem
Delivering Value to Companies Increased R&D budget for Irish site Joint development with key customer More competitive product New product platform New products New distribution deal New export sales New equity investment Inward Investment
Given time, small seeds grow big crops CONVERGENCE Project CMOS- compatible Piezo material FP7 Manpower Energy Harvesting Innovation Partnership AlN process development Ultrasonic resonators Nanorez Project INHALE Project Piezo actuated drug delivery Company Capital Investment AlN process equipment Innovation Partnership H2020 SIRG AlN material research Product Development Implantable pressure sensor H2020 PMUTs for neuro electrodes
Lessons, Learnings and Recommendations For clusters and pilot line programmes Host Co-Host CCAN is a Technology Centre funded by Enterprise Ireland & IDA Ireland
CCAN s Focus Translational Technology Development Basic Research Applied Research Translational Research Proof of Concept Technology Transfer / or Start-up Product Development Research Ideas into Technologies Innovation Technologies into Products
Big network for big knowledge - but small value chains for focussed delivery
Reduce barriers to entry Reward active members 1. Get your CCAN chips New companies get two CCAN credits or chips to join or start CCAN projects 2. Place your bets! Each chip allows companies 12 months of cash-free project activity to reduce risk 3. Earn more chips Companies who cash co-fund projects earn back 1 additional chip for each year of cash co-funding Promotes risk taking. Rewards active companies. Enables investment planning for companies & projects
Clear rules of engagement & rewards for project sponsors Rules of engagement are clear in advance of joining Cash & in-kind contribution requirements are clear Full visibility into IP agreement and bye-laws (available on CCAN website Simple IP model based on risk and reward. More risk a company takes, the better the IP access terms Companies who lead and fund projects get preferential access and more favourable terms than snipers
Other recommendations At this stage of tech development companies should have very generous IP terms (NERF as standard) before risk is reduced Profit for researcher providers comes when the company starts putting the technology into actual product with significant supporting budgets Beware of long timeline from inception to economic impact
Tip: Complete the materials circle Products Systems Components Materials Nano 20
But beware..! CCAN had a 95% approval rating with companies A 90% approval rating with researcher providers Regarded as one of the best cluster programs in Europe by external evaluator at interim review Delivering to multiple industry sectors dilutes impact on any individual sector Spanning multiple sectors means you may not be owned by any individual state agency or sponsor
