Clark Building units of college German or equivalent Course Description This course provides intermediate studies of the German language and is designed to develop second- year language skills. Various language activities such as listening comprehension, reading, writing, and conversation as well as exploration of important grammar aspects will be offered at a more mature level. The course covers the first 6 chapters of the text. It emphasizes the process of learning German as a Second Language and helps to create a solid base for advanced studies of the German language. The course material is carefully selected to suit the needs and interests of the intermediate German students. All course work will be conducted in German. Therefore, it is very important that students have one year of college German or equivalent. Class participation will be required to achieve a passing grade. GERMAN 25A Class Number FALL

The process of language- skill building is always based on regular practice and your active participation in classroom activities. However, attendance per se won t be used as a criterion for grading. Course Goals and Student Learning Objectives They correspond with the major course assignments, which will be used to develop appropriate intermediate language skills: n to develop language functions so that the students can understand a wide variety of written and spoken texts n to work on grammatical accuracy and language structures n to develop intermediate- level writing skills n to broaden students vision of social and cultural life in German speaking countries through Textbook and primary- sources readings n to develop intermediate- level speaking skills, to expand vocabulary with words and terminology from different areas of German social life in various speaking activities, oral presentations and role- play n to summarize facts, opinions, describe social contexts n to use reference materials such as grammar books, bilingual dictionaries, encyclopedias, internet sources, etc. GERMAN 25A Class Number FALL 2015
3 Methods of Instruction Lecture on language aspects planned for the course Solving of grammar and syntax problems performed in class Daily grammar, reading and writing assignments Homework on language aspects covered in classes Discussion of assigned readings Vocabulary tests Midterms review performed in class Comprehensive final exam including all materials covered during the semester Grading Policy Your success in the course depends on your preparation and participation in each class. A passing grade for the course implies completion of all assignments and active in- class contributions. You are expected to arrive on time. In case you missed a class, it is your responsibility to cover the material studied in the class and to do the assigned homework. Federal regulations regarding the definition of the credit hour Success in this course is based on the expectation that students will spend, for each unit of credit, a minimum of forty- five hours over the length of the course (normally 3 hours per unit per week with 1 of the hours used for lecture) for instruction or preparation/studying or course related activities including but not limited to internships, labs, clinical practica. Other course structures will have equivalent workload expectations as described in the syllabus. Student Technology Resources Computer labs for student use are available in the Academic Success Center located on the 1 st floor of Clark Hall and on the 2 nd floor of the Student Union. Additional computer labs may be available in your department/college. Computers are also available in the Martin Luther King Library. A wide variety of audio- visual equipment is available for student checkout from Media Services located in IRC 112.
